Goodreads Reading Challenge Feature for Scrubbies
Hi Eileen Troemel,
I hope you’re doing well.
I recently came across Scrubbies, and I really liked the practical idea behind it. Creating reusable crochet scrubbies that are more durable and hygienic than disposable sponges is a project that many crafters can appreciate. The fact that the patterns are quick to make while producing long lasting, washable household items makes this the kind of crafting book that readers can put to use right away. I think it would be a great fit for crochet enthusiasts and readers who enjoy creating useful handmade projects.
I wanted to personally reach out because I partner with a very active Goodreads reading community where we run a monthly reading challenge designed to help readers discover new books while helping authors introduce their work to engaged readers.
As you probably know, one of the biggest challenges many authors face today is visibility. Even when a book is well written and professionally published, it can still be difficult to reach readers who are willing to give it a chance. Authors invest significant time, effort, and resources into writing, editing, publishing, and marketing, yet many great books still struggle to find the audience they deserve. The market is crowded, algorithms constantly change, and many promotional opportunities provide no guarantee of meaningful engagement.
That is exactly why we run this reading challenge.
The goal is simple. We connect curious readers with books they might not have discovered otherwise while giving authors a structured opportunity to showcase their work to a community that actively participates in reading activities.
Here is how the challenge works.
Every month our Goodreads group organizes a themed reading challenge. Members participate by choosing books that match the prompts for that month. The prompts are intentionally flexible so readers can discover a wide variety of books while completing the challenge.
For the upcoming challenge, the reading period will run from the 3rd of next month through the 30th of next month. This gives readers time to prepare, add books to their reading lists, and actively participate throughout the challenge.
During that time, participants select books that fit the prompts and read them within the challenge period.
As part of the challenge process:
. We introduce selected books to the community before the challenge begins so readers can add them to their reading lists.
. Readers choose books that fit the prompts and begin reading them during the challenge period.
. Participants often share updates about what they are reading inside the group discussions.
. After finishing a book, readers are encouraged to leave reviews, ratings, and recommendations for other members.
. Books that receive positive feedback often continue circulating within the group long after the challenge ends because members recommend them to other readers.
This creates a natural reading environment where books are not simply promoted for a short period, but are actively read, discussed, and shared.
The purpose of the challenge is to create a mutually beneficial experience. Readers enjoy discovering books that fit interesting prompts, while authors gain exposure to an audience that is already motivated to read.
For authors, participating can provide several benefits:
. Your book is introduced to an active Goodreads reading community.
. Readers are already looking for books that fit the monthly challenge prompts.
. Your book can receive organic attention, discussion, and reviews.
. Readers may recommend the book to others inside the group.
. The exposure can help your book reach readers who may not have discovered it through traditional marketing.
Unlike promotions that disappear quickly, this challenge places books into a structured reading activity that encourages participants to actually start and finish the books they choose. Our goal is to create meaningful reader engagement rather than brief exposure.
If you think Scrubbies would be a good fit for one of this month’s prompts, I would be happy to share more details about the challenge and how we could include your book.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
