Alice Renaud

Alice Renaud is a romance author who I met online.  Her book is available for preorder.

Author Bio:

I was born and brought up in Brittany, Western France, my father was French and my mother British (from Wales). I moved to London, UK, in 1997, where I now live with my husband and son. I have been writing since I was 14. I got quite a few short stories published in UK magazines, before moving to longer fiction. I wrote three contemporary romance books, but didn’t find a publisher for them. I then realized that mermen, demons and angels were a lot more fun than sheikhs and billionaires! My first two paranormal romances did not find a publisher either, then I wrote A Merman’s Choice, which was accepted for publication this year by Black Velvet Seductions. It is the first book in a fantasy romance trilogy inspired by the landscapes and legends of Brittany and Wales. I love reading and writing stories, and sharing them with anyone who’s interested!

Tell us about yourself.

Thank you very much for inviting me! I live in London, UK with my husband and son. By day I work full time as a compliance specialist for a pharmaceutical company. On Sundays I’m a lay assistant in my local church. By night I write fantasy and paranormal romance. My first published book, a fantasy romance novella, is coming out with Black Velvet Seductions on 4 January.

When did you know you wanted to be an author?

When I read “The Lord of the Rings” by Tolkien, aged 12. I thought “I want to write stories like that.”

What genres do you like to read?  Are these the same genres you write in?

I read a variety of genres. Fiction and non –fiction historical books, fantasy and paranormal are my favourites, but I also like contemporary fiction. I like happy endings though – I don’t like depressing books! I write paranormal and fantasy romance which is also one of my favourite genres.

Is your book for adults, young adults or children?

Adults, including new adults, but young adults might enjoy it too. The characters are young, in their early twenties.

What is your current release or project?

My first published book, “A Merman’s Choice” is coming out on 4 January. It is the first book in a series about shape-shifting mermen. The second book, “Music for a Merman” is going through edits at the moment, and I have started writing the third book in the series, “Mermaids Marry in Green”.

Tell us about the key characters

Yann is a shape-shifting merman who rescues a young woman, Alex. They meet again eight months later and fall in love – but Alex has no idea that her lover is a magical aquatic being. The mermen’s laws forbid Yann from marrying a human, so he faces a tough choice between his loyalty to his Clan and his love for Alex.

What is your blurb or synopsis of the book?

For centuries the shape-shifting mermen of the Morvann Islands have lived incognito among humans. But one of them, Yann, has developed some bad habits. Like rescuing humans, even when doing so risks revealing his true nature. When he fishes Alex out of the sea, he doesn’t expect her to reappear eight months later, and turn his life upside down by asking him to be her guide.

Alex is determined to fulfil a promise to her dying grandmother, by gathering pictures and stories of the Morvanns. But she soon discovers that, on these remote Welsh islands, legends have a habit of becoming true!

Over the course of a few days, Yann and Alex grow close. But some mermen hate humans. Their hostility, and Yann’s secret, threaten to tear the couple apart just as they are discovering that they are soul mates. Can Yann overcome the obstacles in his path and make the right choice?

The girl wasn’t swimming any more. Yann’s sonar gave him a clear picture of her distress. She was flailing. Sinking.

Fear punched him between the ribs. Just a few minutes earlier, she’d been splashing in the shallows, laughing and humming to herself. That music had rippled around him, brightening his journey. Now the sea was snuffing that light out. No! He wouldn’t let it happen. His webbed hands and feet churned the water, and he shot towards her like a torpedo.

Not this one, sea. Not this time.

She came in sight, slim and lovely, with long bronzed limbs and hair the colour of sunshine. But her eyes were closed, her movements slow, hesitant, as if she were falling asleep. His fear hardened into cold, sharp dread. He poured all his energy into the last powerful strokes. He’d almost reached her, when his eye caught the shadow, beyond the crystal surface, out there in the dry world. He sent a sound wave. It came back with an image, and the icy blade inside him twisted: two-legged shapes on the beach. Humans!

If they saw him, they’d know him for what he was. His people’s secret, kept for thousands of years, would be out.

The girl’s head vanished under the waves. To hell with that. He couldn’t let her drown.

He grabbed her and dragged her back to the surface. She thrashed in his arms and coughed up seawater. Intense relief swept through him as he hugged her to his chest. He’d sworn he’d never again swim by and let a human drown, and he’d kept his promise. If the young woman’s eyes remained closed, he might even get away with it. He wanted her to breathe, not scream in horror at the sight of his dark grey face.

He looked up. The shapes on the beach had gone. Another miracle, or perhaps he’d only imagined them. What if they came back? A fresh stab of anxiety propelled him through the surf. He lay the girl down on the sand, cushioning her head on his arm. Her round breasts, encased in the turquoise bikini top, rose and fell in a regular rhythm, but her skin felt clammy under his hands. He scanned the beach in vain for something to cover her with, and saw the motorbike. A sleek, sporty number, well camouflaged among the grass-covered dunes.

Shit. He retracted the webs between his fingers and toes, but his body would take at least twenty minutes to shift from the aquatic shape to the human form. And even when it did, what would the humans think, if they found him naked next to an unconscious girl?

They’d arrest him for indecent exposure, or worse. He touched the girl’s face with a tentative finger. The thought of leaving her sickened him. But he couldn’t stay.

Her eyelids fluttered and she muttered a name. “Boris?”

As if in answer, a male voice tore through the air, from behind the dunes. “Alex!”

Yann flew towards the waves. Help was coming for the girl. She’d be fine.

He sped into the open sea, leaving the human world and human fears behind. He’d saved her. That knowledge glowed inside him as he plunged into the depths. She was safe, and his people would remain safe too. He sang as he rode the riptide, a song full of triumph and laughter. Far away, the humpback whales heard him and picked up the tune. He’d got away with it.

For now. His euphoria abated. No humans had seen him, but his people had sharper eyes and ears. He shouldn’t even have been hanging around, in full merman shape, so close to an inhabited island, but he’d thought he’d be OK. In late September so few tourists were around, and locals had better things to do than go swimming in cold water.  He sniffed the current and tuned his sonar towards the Clans’ Islands. Nothing. With luck, no one would notice that he’d broken the merpeople’s rules.

Again.

Do you have a favorite scene?

(Spoiler alert! J) Yes, in Chapter 8, when Alex has to overcome her phobia of water to rescue Yann.

JJ Lore

J. J. Lore writes sexy and passionate romance novels.  Her covers are yummy.

Author Bio:

J. J. Lore has been interested in the dashing folks who roam outer space since she was transfixed by Han Solo piloting the Millennium Falcon a long time ago in a theatre far, far away. Sadly, there is no way for her to join in the fun of intergalactic adventures unless she writes them, so that’s what she does whenever she isn’t taking care of the business of life. If you can’t find her typing madly on her sluggish keyboard, she’s probably poking around in a thrift store searching for the perfect pair of worn jeans or a vintage silk scarf. These days she puts her anthropology degree to work when she whips up dishes from many different cultures, most of which benefit from a liberal dose of sriracha or a smear of green curry paste. Her favorite reading topics are costume history, epidemiology, and permaculture, all of which she’d like to work into a story if she’s suddenly overcome with a brilliant idea someday.

1. Tell us about yourself.

Probably the contrasts in my life define me. I grew up in a rural community and currently live in the largest metro area in the state. I was an independent loner through much of my adulthood, but now I’m married and a parent. I love to travel but hate to leave my house, you get the idea!

2. When did you know you wanted to be an author?

I’ve always had stories in my head, I’ve rewritten movie scripts as I’ve watched the film, and I love to get lost in a picture or an object and imagine the tale behind it. After some family health scares, I started to write a few of my stories down, just to give my brain an alternate route for the stress, and after the first few, they actually held together well enough for me to submit a couple on a whim. After signing a couple of contracts, it seemed like this was something I could do.

3. What genres do you like to read?  Are these the same genres you write in?

I don’t read romance at all, even though that’s what I write! I always feel weird when I admit that, but I simply don’t. It’s probably because I use up all my romance mojo when I’m writing, and I don’t have any left for recreational reading. When I do read, it’s science thrillers, horror, or non-fiction.

4. Is your book for adults, young adults or children?

It’s definitely for adults, as I’m a ‘bedroom door open’ sort of romance writer. Plus I like to write about all sorts of relationships.

5. What is your current release or project?

I just had a new release, Immersion. Its book 2 in my Fallen Earth RH series. It’s a mash up of alternate timelines, alien invasion, and WWII, so there were a lot of plates to keep spinning. Plus, since it’s reverse harem, my heroine has three love interests.

6. Tell us about the key characters.

This is definitely Marie’s story. She’s a modern-day woman kidnapped from our timeline and shifted to a new one to help fight an alien invasion that took place at the end of World War II. She has a special skill that the men of her squad need in order to fulfill their mission of clearing a city of carnivorous creatures that have been seeded on Earth to clear it for an as-yet unexplained reason.

7. What is your blurb or synopsis of the book?

I’m barely surviving the world’s toughest hands-on training course, but at least my three instructors are kind. And increasingly attractive. We’re still in the same devastated city with voracious aliens waiting at every turn, but instead of checking houses, we’re now clearing entire factory buildings, and I’ve forgotten what it’s like to relax.

Everywhere I turn is danger, or one of the men sworn to protect me. They’ve become so important to me, I fear for their safety as much as my own, especially when the creatures we’re here to kill keep evolving, making everything we thought we knew obsolete. One thing I do know is that my extracurricular desires will put a strain on the bond we share if I act on them.

When we join other extermination units, my special skills provoke unwanted attention, and instill a suspicion that maybe I’m not as safe with my men as I’d hoped. It’s a difficult lesson to learn that some of my fellow fighters might be just as treacherous as the creatures we’re ordered to kill.

8.  Share an excerpt .

The babble from outside had remained constant, so I was prepared for the throngs of people inside. The men formed up around me like we were entering an alien nest, and we worked our way down the corridor, deeper into the building. We passed restrooms where I heard the rush of flowing water and smiled. To be able to wash my hands properly again!

Etak must have noticed my expression, as he halted and gestured at the doorway helpfully marked ‘Girls’. I wanted to hug him I was so thrilled, but instead, I scuttled inside, awestruck by the shiny, newly-cleaned tiles and swinging doors. A bank of blinding white porcelain sinks ran along one mirrored wall, and I thought I even spied a shower stall at the far end. It was a vision and I walked in with as much awe as I would have entering a five-star hotel.

Big bars of yellow soap were at every sink, and there was a cloth towel on a ratcheting roller, a device I only vaguely remembered seeing in old movies. I waited a moment, then turned on the handle marked ‘H”. Water began to run, and with satisfaction, I watched steam rise from the sink. It was hot. My skin turned pink as I ran my hands under it, then spent several moments making soapy foam, so much it dripped from my wrists.

“It’s wonderful, isn’t it?” a feminine voice spoke up behind me and I looked in the mirror.

Behind me stood a young woman, also dressed in tan and slate blue. Her eyes were amber-brown, and her full and flushed cheeks made me think of an advertisement for face cream. “I arrived yesterday and I think I’ve washed my hands fifty times already.”

“Hi. I’m Marie,” I said, holding out my hand, which was still covered with soapy bubbles. She laughed as I rinsed it.

“I saw you slip in here and decided to follow and introduce myself. I’m Colette. From Quebec, originally. The future, I suppose you’d say.”

So that was the slight accent I’d picked up. “Ohio, for me. Are you all right?” I didn’t know what I was asking, but I suddenly wanted to hear her story. Just like with Brit, knowing someone else was in the same shoes as I made me curious.

“Very well. There are books for us, if you like to read. And they’ve tried to make the food good.” Colette made a little shrug. “Infinitely better than crawling through the muck.”

“How long have you—” A low voice calling out her name stopped me.

Colette raised a winged eyebrow and sighed. “Aken, I’ll be out soon. Give me a moment more.”

I clenched my hands together, suddenly sad that she would be going and we’d only just met.

“I’ll find you later, Marie. They worry so much, and then one of them might unwittingly make a comment about taking so much time in here, and then we’ll spat.” She made a pffting noise. “For all their special training, sometimes the old-fashioned notions emerge.”

“I hope you do. Find me later, not spat.” I held out my hand again and worried she’d think I was odd, but she grasped it, then leaned in for a quick air kiss.

“Relax, eat, rest, be clean. Enjoy the respite while you can.” She narrowed her eyes and looked me over. “They don’t know how difficult it is, to have the creatures invade our bodies the way they do. It’s exhausting.”

I nodded, relieved to hear her put that terrible sensation into words. “It’s like they crawl up my nose.”

Colette gave a sniff as Aken called for her again. “Exactly. I will see you later, but need to go before he bursts a blood vessel.”

I waved as she left, then felt foolish, like the new girl in school desperate for a friend. I did need a friend, a whole boatload of them, but the time I might have with anyone here was limited. Drawn back to the luxury of the facilities, I checked all the amenities, washed my hands one last time, and left the quiet bathroom. I’d heard a continuous low mutter from the men’s next door and was unsurprised to find a line outside it when I emerged. Even though there were women among the soldiers, and other sniffers like me, males were the majority gender here.

9. Do you have a favorite scene?

That’s like asking me to pick my favorite cheese. I can’t do it!

10.  What advice would you give a beginner?

Your first book is a trial run. It’s meant to test you, show you your weaknesses, and humble you. Pick yourself up, learn your lessons, and book number two will be better.

A. L. Long

A.L. Long and I were both at the reader event in the Dells.  Through this event we connected on social media and she graciously agreed to do an interview.

Author Bio:

I am A. L. Long an erotic romance writer and after retiring from the financial industry I wanted a way to spend my time enjoying what I’ve always wanted to do.  It was then I decided I want to write.  I always knew I wanted to write but never had the time. I have a deep passion for romance and thought why not share my ideas. When I’m not writing, I like to spend my time outside taking long walks and sipping wine under the stars.  I have also just recently been added to the Wicked Pen as one of the featured authors.

1. Tell us about yourself.

Award winning Author of the Independent Press Award and NYC Big Book Award. A.L. Long is also the recipient of the National Indie Excellence Award.

My love for writing began several years ago after an early retirement from a demanding job that I loved, but also hated because it consumed so much of my time. Now, I am able to focus my time on what I love. Writing romance has been a life long dream and to actually say that I am a published author is beyond what I would have ever expected.

Even though some may say I have a little naughtiness in my books, I look at it as an added bonus for my readers. After all what is a romance book without a little spice.

When I am not writing, I enjoy spending time with friends either at home or out on the town. Mostly, I enjoy a relaxing night at home where I can enjoy a glass of wine in the company of a good book.

2. When did you know you wanted to be an author?

After retiring, I knew that I wanted to do something to fill my time. I have always wanted to write so than was when I decided to take the time to do it.

3. What genres do you like to read?  Are these the same genres you write in?

I love reading romance, spicy romance. The books I read have to have a plot otherwise I won’t read them. All of my books are of this genre.

4. Is your book for adults, young adults or children?

All of my books are for adults 18+.

5. What is your current release or project?

I have recently finished my 15th book titled Saving Hanna. It will be released on 12/11.

6. Tell us about the key characters

The key characters are Hanna Marsh, who is a country girl forced to move to the city in order to survive and Aiden Marsh, a rich business man who has a connection to her which she soon finds out.

7. What is your blurb or synopsis of the book?

For as long as Hanna can remember she always did everything she could to keep her brother Carter out of trouble. She soon finds out that not even your own family can be trusted and blood isn’t thicker than water. Losing the only home, she knew to her brother’s greed, Hanna does everything she can to make a new life for herself and get back the life she once knew.

Hanna never thought Aiden Drake would be the one person who could give back what was taken from her. All it would take is one night, only that one night never comes when revenge comes knocking and the one man to save her is also the one man with more greed than her brother.

Gathering the last of the dishes from table seven, I quickly wiped it clean, making it ready for the next customer. Hearing the bell ring once again above the door, I looked up with a smile to greet the customer. My smile changed into that of bewilderment when a tall gentleman wearing an expensive suit entered the diner. I couldn’t take my eyes off of him as he took a seat at the counter. As confident as he appeared to be, there was no way he belonged here. The diner sported the laid-back kind of people, and this man seemed far from laid back.

Picking up the gray tub filled with dirty dishes, I headed over to where the man sat to get a better look at him. His masculine features did him justice. He was beyond handsome. The minute he looked my way and our eyes met, I knew I had been caught staring at him. My face must have turned ten different shades of red from embarrassment. I wasn’t the type to stare at strangers, but this man was picture-perfect and my eyes were glued to him, and that was putting it mildly.

Turning away from him to hide my embarrassment, I pushed open the swinging door to the kitchen to make my escape. One thing I didn’t count on was Byron coming from the other side to meet me. Being embarrassed twice in one day was the last thing I wanted, but the tub I was carrying flew in the air above me. Trying to catch it before it hit the floor, I ended up losing my balance, sending me on the way down. I could only pray that when I hit the floor, I wouldn’t end up really hurting myself.

Closing my eyes, I waited for the inevitable to happen, only it never came. Knowing Byron was in front of me, I did not expect someone to grab me from behind to keep my body upright so I would avoid a hard crash to the floor.

His voice was deep. “Miss, are you okay?”

Readjusting the dress that looked like it had come from the 1960s, I turned to the voice to find it was the handsome gentleman that had my mind spinning. Tongue-tied, I smiled gratefully and said, “Thank you,” in a shy, shallow voice. What I really wanted to say was, “Where did you come from?”

Our eyes were connected for much longer than we both had expected, tipping on the edge of awkwardness before the man responded, “You’re quite welcome. It would sadden me if as pretty a girl as yourself would have injured herself.”

I could feel my cheeks redden in reaction to his comment. No one had ever regarded me as pretty. Sending the man one last smile, I bent down and helped Byron clean up the mess I had made. Thankfully, the man returned to his seat, giving me the room I needed to compose myself. Looking over to Byron, he didn’t seem at all happy with what had just taken place. Come to think about it, he never seemed happy about anything. He was definitely a different breed of man. More gothic than anything with his dark black hair, which I was positive he colored to match his painted black fingernails. It was no wonder that Dotty kept him in the kitchen. Removing his nail polish and the many piercings he had on his face wasn’t an option for him, but for Dotty it was the only way she would consider moving him out of his current position of dishwasher.

Handing the tub to Byron, I headed back to the dining area to welcome any customers that might have entered during my absence. Glancing quickly over to the counter, the handsome gentleman had his attention drawn to the menu. Seeing that no one had entered the diner, I headed his way to take his order. Pulling the small notepad from my apron, I flipped it open to a clean sheet. Before I reached the counter, I grabbed a full water pitcher sitting near the waitress station. By the time I had reached to counter, he must have already made his choice as the menu was now lying flat against the counter.

With a welcoming smile, I stood opposite of him and asked timidly, “Are you ready to order?” while taking a clean glass from under the counter and filling it with water.

When he looked up at me, I couldn’t help but notice his eyes. I couldn’t tell if they were blue or green, but they were warm and inviting, which had no problem drawing me in. Catching myself once again on the verge of an embarrassing situation, I cleared my throat and said, “What will it be then?”

With a smile that was more like a mischievous grin, he replied, “What do you recommend, Hanna?

9. Do you have a favorite scene?

I like the scene towards the end of the book. I can’t tell you because it would give away the story.

10.  What advice would you give a beginner?

Don’t ever give up writing. Success doesn’t happen over night. If you truly love writing stick with it and the success will come when you least expect it.

Award Winning Author CJ Warrant can’t exist without coffee, chocolate and a damn story brewing in her head. She was born an overseas Army brat, in a Korean Italian household but settled in the states at the ripe old age of five. With a long career in the beauty industry, a wonderful marriage to a great man and three kids nearly all grown, her view of life is as such. Life is a journey; both good and bad, light and dark, but she takes it all in and learns from every experience life has to offer. 1. Tell us about yourself.

Thank you Eileen for having me here.

My name is CJ Warrant and I write romantic suspense and contemporary romance. I live in the Midwest with my husband and three nearly grown kids. I grew up in a Korean Italian household, where kimchi and rice is right next to a bowl of pasta! Love coffee, my family and a good book I can cuddle up with.

2. When did you know you wanted to be an author?

It actually was gradual. As a kid, I always wrote poems and stories, but never really took it seriously until I was older. Funny thing is, about ten years back, my husband found the first manuscript I hand written.  So with his encouragement, I began to pursue a writing career.

3. What genres do you like to read?  Are these the same genres you write in?

I love to read paranormal, erotic and romantic suspense.  And yes, I do also write in those genres.

4. Is your book for adults, young adults or children?

My books are strictly for adults.

5. What is your current release or project?

My latest release is called Sweet Redemption; book two in the Landry Brothers Duet, which is contemporary romance. But I’m currently working on two series, one is a romantic suspense and the other is a paranormal M/M romance.

6. Tell us about the key characters

The key characters in Sweet Redemption is Markus Landry, a no nonsense Chicago Lawyer transplanted to Los Angeles. A party boy outside the courtroom but he finally has enough of that life style. Charlie White is a quirky small town Librarian of Valentine, Oklahoma. She has a knack for languages and likes to swears in French.

7. What is your blurb or synopsis of the book?

Heading to Chicago for his mother’s funeral, Markus Landry is waylaid by a piece of metal piercing his gas tank. Stuck in the small town of Valentine, Oklahoma, he meets a vivacious spitfire librarian, Charlie White, who quickly gets under his skin. Markus wants more than a taste of her sweet lips and asks her to take a trip back to his hometown.

With just over a month left before Charlie has to close down her beloved library, meeting Markus is a welcome distraction from her anguish about what she has to do. Even though she barely knows the man, Charlie takes a chance and lets her attraction for Markus take the lead and hope he doesn’t break her heart.

But seeing the brother he betrayed, Markus doubts he’s worth Charlie’s affection and pushes her away. Their chemistry is undeniable, but love may not be enough when you’re looking for redemption.

8.  Share an excerpt (up to 800 words).

“Charlie.” Mike trudged over and nudged the woman out of the way. “Move.” With a quick twist of his fingers, he opened the hood and locked it in place with a thin metal pole that bowed under the weight. He straightened and looked over the engine.

Charlie. Maybe short for Charlene. Jesus. Who cares? Turn around and start walking. Yeah, right. Fascination cemented me in place as I watched.

“It’s misfiring again, Mike. I thought you’d fixed it,” she said in a huff. It was cute how her hands planted to her hips and a small frown marred her porcelain face.

“I told you it’s time to get rid of this hunk of junk. You need something safer, Charlie. Your grandmother is probably turning over in her grave knowing you’re still driving this piece of shit.” Mike rubbed at his neck, staring down at the engine.

“This fine vehicle isn’t cacca. This was my Nana’s car. I can’t let it go just yet. Are you ready for the festival?” Her change in topic had me chuckle, but apparently it didn’t deter Mike from scolding her further.

Cacca? Seriously?

“Now listen here, missy. Stop talking with all that foreign stuff you learned in those books and hear this. This car is dangerous. A death trap. Promise me you’ll get a new one or I’m not going to fix it anymore. I mean it this time,” Mike said with firm certainty as he faced her, folding his arms across his chest.

“Fine. Let’s shake on it.” She extended her hand with a wide smile.

Damn. She was beautiful and smart. Even with her blonde hair messily pinned up on top of her head, and flushed cheeks, her smile was radiant, and sneaky.

“Fine.” Mike shook her hand. “Now, let’s see what’s the problem. I’m sure it’s a quick fix.”

I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes. She totally manipulated the mechanic, and he didn’t see it coming. This Charlie was a spitfire. And just from what I heard, this wasn’t the first time they had agreed to Mike’s terms. She totally bamboozled him.

The warmth of her elation caught me off guard. I couldn’t help but smile.

Mike straightened and turned to Charlie. “Stop hovering. And do me a favor.” Mike thumbed my way. “Go take that guy to Arlene’s while I look at this hunk of junk. He’ll need a room too.”

“Hey now, watch what you say around my baby. She’s sensitive,” Charlie said, stroking a headlight tenderly.

“The guy?” Mike reiterated, pointing to me.

Apparently she hadn’t noticed me, because her smile softened into a slight frown when she looked my way. Charlie turned back to Mike and uttered in a hushed tone but I was able to hear her clearly. “What did you do, Mike?”

Her lips quirked up tight and she glared at the big man. Mike was at least a foot taller than her. Yet, she wasn’t the least intimidated.

“Don’t blame me. He ran over something, and it caught his gas tank. Gotta repair it tomorrow, ‘cause I don’t have the gas to repair it now.”

Charlie peered around Mike and grinned. “I hope so.” She walked over and put her hand out. “Hi. I’m Charlene White, but most people call me Charlie. It’s nice to meet you.”

I studied her hand for a second before taking it. “Markus Landry. But you can call me Mark.”

“I like Markus better.”

That was honest. “Fine. Then call me Markus.”

“You’re not from around here, Markus Landry. Chicago?”

My eyes widened in surprise. “How’d you guess?”

“It’s my knack. Nana always said I had a gift for languages and accents.”

“Knack?” I questioned, not quite understanding what she was talking about. “Languages?”

“Yes. My Nana said I have a way of remembering different languages and certain accents from different parts of the world. Of course I can’t remember what day of the week it is sometimes, but languages and the way people talk—their accents, I’m good at.” She gave me a wink and another smile.

I scanned the tiny town and then stared back at her. I hated to be presumptuous, but one look at this woman and I saw only a country girl. “Really. You mean a linguist.” My slight condemnation was apparent because Charlie’s smile faded.

Her eyes narrowed on me and said, “Vous êtes un connard.”

I froze. I hadn’t taken French since high school and one year in college for fun but… “Did you just call me a dickhead in French?”

Charlie’s eyes sparked with laughter before she spoke. “You understand—well, good. It fits,” she said with a flush across her cheeks. “I’m heading to Arlene’s. Call me there, Mike.” She trudged passed me and called out from over her shoulder, “Are you coming, Mr. Landry?”

9. Do you have a favorite scene?

I love when Markus and Charlie first meet. Charlie can’t be nothing but herself and it’s refreshing to Markus. Honest.

10.  What advice would you give a beginner?

Don’t Give Up. No matter what the challenges are, keep pursuing your dreams.

Lea Kirk

Lea and I met online.  We chatted for a little bit about being busy.  The work of a writer is never done.  Knowing how busy she is, I want to thank her for taking the time to answer my questions.

Author Bio:

USA Today Bestselling Author Lea Kirk loves to transport her readers to other worlds with her science fiction romance Prophecy series (Prophecy, Blue Christmas, All of Me, Salvation, and Collision). She’s made one foray into paranormal with her Kindle World vampire novella, Made for Her.

When she not busy writing, she’s hanging out with her wonderful hubby of twenty-eight years, their five kids (aka, the nerd herd), and a spoiled Dobie mix pup.

Now for the questions:

1. Tell us about yourself.

Thank you for having me today, Eileen! My name is Lea Kirk (pronounced “Lee”), and I am the author of the Sci-fi Romance series The Prophecy Series.

2. When did you know you wanted to be an author?

Consciously, in third grade. Before then, I can’t remember a time when books didn’t resonate with me. Even before pre-school I felt them calling to me. Learning to read and write where huge milestones in my life

3. What genres do you like to read?  Are these the same genres you write in?

My first love is Sci-fi Romance, and it’s the primary genre I write. I also love Paranormal Romance and Romantic Suspense. I’ve written one PNR, a vampire romance for S.E. Smith’s Magic, New Mexico series. (Made for Her) As for Romantic Suspense, I have a lot to learn before I even attempt to write that genre.

4. Is your book for adults, young adults or children?

Definitely adult/new adult. Although, my six-year-old niece is Jonesin’ to read all my books. My sister has had to hide her print copies.

5. What is your current release or project?

My newest release, Blue Christmas, released today on Amazon! (Due to a scheduling snafu, it won’t be available on B&N, iTunes, and Kobo until November 1st. You can pre-order it from those sellers, though!) This is a novella-size continuation story of my first book, Prophecy. It’s about what happens when the hero and heroine’s youngest daughter realizes it’s almost Christmas and decides she must get word to Santa Claus that they’re living in space now. It’s sweet enough that my niece will be able to read it.

Also, a little promotional bonus, I have marked down Prophecy to celebrate this release. Right now, you can buy both stories for less than Prophecy at full price!

6. Tell us about the key characters.

Blue Christmas centers on four-year-old Maggie and her parents. Alex and Gryf have some unique challenges. For one, Gryf is an alien. He married an Earthling and adopted three Earthling orphans. Having five kids of my own, I have discovered that there is a lot of humor in raising them. Some of that humor is reflected in this story.

7. What is your blurb or synopsis of the book?

Four-year-old Maggie Bock loves living aboard her parents’ space cruiser, but it’s almost Christmas. What if Santa doesn’t know where she is now? Someone will have to find him and tell him, of course. But when she stows away on her mother’s transport to Terr, she sets off a chain of events that brings the holidays to the Atlantis.

Join Maggie and her family for a hilarious and heart-warming adventure as Matirans and Terrians come together to celebrate what makes the holiday season so very special.

8.  Share an excerpt (up to 800 words).

Gryf lifted one hand and covered his eyes, but it would take more than that to tame the chaos in his mind. “I am unsure how to explain all this to a four-year-old.”

Alexandra chuckled again. “I know what you mean. Do you have a similar holiday?”

“None of our holidays involve a large man dressed in a red suit entering homes to eat sweets and leave gifts to ‘deserving’ children.” He raised his hand and met her gaze. “As a father, I want to believe my children can do no wrong, but we both know this is not the case. Do we perpetuate the myth by giving Maggie a gift from Santa Claus, thereby condoning her recent misbehavior?”

“And Flora’s and Juan’s, too. They haven’t admitted to it yet, but they helped her.”

He lowered his hand until his arm rested at his side. “At the same time, they are overall well-behaved children. There must be a way to honor these traditions.”

“True. I want to make it happen for them, but the one thing I hated about Christmas was the commercialism. For a lot of people, it’d become a contest to go bigger and better. The money you spent on a person equaled how much you cared for them. How do we do this without falling into that trap?”

That was certainly not the original message of the holiday. If he understood correctly, Christmas should serve as a reminder to love one another. To help the less fortunate. But, Alexandra seemed to feel the meaning had been lost.

He reached for her and rolled her atop him. Her soft breasts flattened against his chest in the most enticing way. “I believe I am formulating a plan.”

9. Do you have a favorite scene?

The popcorn scene. It was fun to research and write.

10.  What advice would you give a beginner?

The one piece of advice that was given me that I foolishly ignored was to have a few books already finished before publishing my first book. Another is to give yourself a break on two levels. 1) Take the weekend off from writing. It’s okay. 2) Be kind to yourself. Don’t beat yourself up when things aren’t going well. Have your cry, then carry the lessons you’ve learned in your heart.

Kelley Harrell

Kelley Harrell and I met through a group of like minded people.  She’s offered advice and support to me as a writer.  Her writing skills are wonderful.

Here is a snippet from the review I did on her Teen Spirit book:

Posted on Facing North

Harrell’s targeted audience are young adults or those starting out on the path of shamanism. The language and style of writing is appropriate for the age group without being condescending. Her style informs without droning on. She gives enough information to give the reader a basic knowledge without overwhelming them if this is their first foray into the topic. According to her bio, Kelly Harrell is a modern shaman and lifelong intuitive. She has a master’s in religious studies and is an ordained interfaith minister. With a nature based system, she works with runes and follows Seior, animism, and Druidry. She states her purpose in writing this book is to guide the young intuitive into a mature facilitator of healing for others.

In her preface, Harrell discusses how a young person has wisdom even though they are young. She starts with how most people become aware there is more to their existence beyond themselves and follows through with how young people can have wisdom or can tap into the world knowledge. She discusses the conflict adults have with idolizing childhood and the connection children have with the source of energy but still consider the children / young people to not being wise. By the end of the preface, Harrell attempts to make a connection and mirrors her format in the later essays by talking about her own experiences.

Author Bio:

One was that she bore an incurable lust for the written word before she’d even learned an alphabet. Having originated under such circumstances she only assumed a path in writing could sate.

Things being what they were, she managed a thorough education in penning her soul’s art, the destination of which she’d planned to be at the feet of National Geographic Magazine (back when there was no NatGeo and there was only one magazine that focused on mummies, Pompeii, bog people, and vanished civilizations). It didn’t work out that way, though. When the time came to pack her bags the impetus was to stay put, a wordless mystery that took Kelley quite a while to unravel.

Some time later she came back to her other childhood truth, which was that she could interact vividly in the unseen world. Kelley felt a little silly then. She’d finally realized all those elegant letters of her naïve youth were really spelling, “Don’t write about the past. Listen to it tell its story.”

From that point on Kelley’s writing took on a rather different life. She began weaving tales of souls consciously steering through the wreckage of colonialism, unquiet dead, and Ancestors becoming–a passionate, sacred pursuit.

Now for the questions:

1. Tell us about yourself.

I’m an author, deathwalker, and intuitive. I live in North Carolina, and have a practice, Soul Intent Arts, in which I teach others to be spiritual stewards of themselves and Nature. My writing and work are focused on radical self-care to ensure community service, with an emphasis social justice through sacred activism.

2. When did you know you wanted to be an author?

I knew I wanted to be an author from about four years old. I wrote things by dictating them to my other. It was my dream to become an author.

3. What genres do you like to read?  Are these the same genres you write in?

I prefer urban fantasy. I love the idea of magick folded into everyday life. I tend to read more nonfiction than fiction, however. I have written mostly nonfiction oriented toward animistic and shamanic life, though my first novel is in submission, now. It is New Adult Urban Fantasy.

4. Is your book for adults, young adults or children?

My books are primarily for adults and young adults. I haven’t written books for children.

5. What is your current release or project?

My current book is Runic Book of Days, which is a devotional-style approach to direct relationship with the runes by working with them in season.

6. Tell us about the key characters

It’s non-fiction, so they main characters are me, a ton of research, and scenery from thousands of years ago.

7. What is your blurb or synopsis of the book?

The Old Norse runes, known as the Elder Futhark, have long joined forces with the cycles of the seasons to offer powerful initiations, guidance, and wisdom. Aligning the sacred festivals, plantings, and harvests of ancient runic calendars with our modern 12-month calendar, Kelley Harrell reveals how the runes can once again offer initiations as well as instruct us on the holy days and creative rhythms of today.

Drawing on her more than 25 years of shamanic practice and runic study, Harrell offers a step-by-step primer to work with the runes throughout the year.  She explores the meaning of each Elder Futhark rune in detail and presents structured runic devotionals for each half-month, interwoven with guidance on how to make the best use of the life force available during each season. Included are runic initiation rituals for the 8 pagan Sabbats, or holy days, such as the Samhain and Beltane (May Day). Harrell also explains how the runes leading up to each Sabbat help create the space for properly greeting each calendrical transition and completing its initiation.

By moving through Nature’s cycle with the runes, each year becomes a reliable and trackable process of personalized growth and spiritual connection. Progressing through the teachings of each rune while honoring the seasons, Harrell’s year with the Elder Futhark becomes an initiation into a direct relationship with powers of Nature.

Chapter 7

July 14-July 29

Uruz: Taming the Mysterious Self

In the previous half-month Fehu taught us much of personal prosperity and the commitment required to sustain it. As we move into Uruz, that commitment deepens. Uruz represents Auðhumla, the feminine divine in the guise of the auroch–the wild ox. This stave–and in turn this half month–focuses on the body, well-being, and wild potential.

It’s curious that, in the runic ordering, we are given the opportunity to learn how to tend our wealth before we encounter actual creation. We’re given instruction on how to sustain, through Fehu, before we’re fully manifest. If that isn’t a significant hat tip to the importance of duty in earthly life, I don’t know what is. As Uruz is associated with Auðhumla, it’s a significant force of creation. Because there’s no indication of how she originated, she’s seen as having created herself. She’s seen as eternal, thus sustaining in her support of us. With Uruz, we are such infinite mysteries as well.

Our short time with her brings an important observation of vitality. In this season we have the opportunity to make use of our faculties to our highest capability and have the support of an omnipotent force while we do so. This is a natural time to expect and find physical support. It’s a time that the body’s ability to self-heal is exalted, and any changes we implement toward that goal will be fortified by the elements.

With the associations of Auðhumla creating herself into form, Uruz is very much steeped in all things body and sexuality. By form being our most evident state of self, we take for granted that we know our bodies. Even from a spiritual standpoint, we sometimes passively deny our physicality in favor of our souls. If we sit with that, take on honoring the self, we discover that the part of ourselves we least often know isn’t the soul, but our body and its most powerful consciousness counterpart–our ego. When we sit in ignorance of the ego, we sit in ignorance of Shadow, which is our greatest mystery.

Where Fehu represents domesticated cattle, Uruz is the wild, untamable auroch, and as such, brings us close to parts of ourselves that we’ve been taught to subdue, if not subvert. More dominant and demanding than feelings, unconscious motivators are usually internalized before we’re even verbal. They express as Freudian slips, acting without clear motivation, acting without realizing the action, irrational fear, and so on. Uruz brings our attention to these seemingly minor behaviors as places to generate radical change. When we become consciously aware of them, thus take back control of them, we integrate them into informed choice. We stand with more information and can focus the energy and change we want to make in our lives and the world. We do that by engaging Shadow.

Shadow is our greatest intrigue, not because it is unknowable, but because we most often desire not to know it. We evade working with it because it seems frightening, or it may reveal aspects of ourselves too dark for us to handle. In reality, Shadow is merely what isn’t lit. It’s what we don’t know about ourselves. Once revealed, it’s no longer Shadow.

Uruz harnesses the ability to sit in the space between knowing impeccably who we are, and having no idea. It fosters our ability to dwell in our thoughtspace and create ourselves as we want to be, which is born of learning who we’ve been. This stave is wild potential, magick at its rawest.

Bear in mind Uruz is the creative force, not what is created.

9. Do you have a favorite scene?

My book doesn’t have scenes, but my favorite chapter is the sabbat initiation for Samhain. It’s my favorite time of year, and I adore the darkness. The initiation for that sabbat focuses on embracing need.

10.  What advice would you give a beginner?

To a beginning writer, I say do your due diligence. The automation of everything today gives the indication that you can cut corners to get published. If you want to be taken seriously as an author and have a long-lasting career, do your homework, invest as much time and energy into the publication process–however you do it, trad or indie–as you do the writing process (maybe even more), and stay true to your writing vision and voice.

To a beginning rune reader, I say focus on coming into relationship with each rune alongside learning what each rune means. It takes a combination of focusing on how they work for your in a modern context, as well as understanding the ancient culture that produced them. I teach a class on coming into relationship with the runes, Reawakening with the Runes.

Kari Holloway

In a writing group, Kari Holloway and I bumped into each other.  She writes across a number of genres.  Her new book launched on October 2, 2018 and she talks about it below.

Author Bio

Kari Holloway is an American author with over a dozen published works to her name. Between the twisting tales of romance under weeping willows in the Laughing P series and the high-pace paranormal in her Devil’s Playground series, Kari Holloway prefers to sit poolside enjoying vanilla ice cream or hanging out with friends playing Fluxx. She’s currently working on book 5 in her Devil’s Playground series and toying with a western romance set in the 1800s—both ideas slated for release in 2019.

To find out more about Kari Holloway, check out her website (www.kariholloway.com).

Now for the questions

1. Tell us about yourself.

My name is Kari Holloway. I’m an American writer who dabbles in southern romances filled with iconic components of sexy cowboys and firefighters, explored the unexplained in my paranormal series, found my way to the battlefields of the Civil War, and to love’s first kiss under the weeping willow through various anthologies.

When I’m not writing, I enjoy hanging out with my family, playing games like Fluxx, and enjoying vanilla ice cream.

2. When did you know you wanted to be an author?

I remember writing when I was 8. It was a western inspired by L’amour. I never considered it as a career option until I had my second child and was going stir crazy from being at home with no way to express my creative side.

3. What genres do you like to read?  Are these the same genres you write in?

I enjoy most genres minus horror. I love Brent Week’s Night Angel trilogy. Like people I find it hard to stay in one genre.

4. Is your book for adults, young adults or children?

Definity for adults. The cleanest book of mine is Strings Attached while there are things in Cracked But Never Broken, the Howling King, and Mark of Cain that are the darker parts of human nature.

5. What is your current release or project?

Strings Attached is a sweet/clean romance set in Charleston, South Carolina. It released October 2, 2018 on all major retailers.

6. Tell us about the key characters

Kyle is a comic shop owner and Carissa is a music teacher.

7. What is your blurb or synopsis of the book?

Carissa is a high school teacher and an accomplished violinist with lifelong aspirations of joining the orchestra she fell in love with as a child. Single-minded and meticulous in her pursuit, a chance encounter with Kyle makes her question what she really wants out of life.

Kyle’s life is going exactly the way he wants. Well … almost. With the hottest comic book shop in Charleston and a steady group of close friends and family, he’s just waiting for love—and maybe he’s finally found it in Carissa. But Gramps’ shocking deathbed confession may have just thrown a kink in the chain of his dreams with a request that borders on insane.

What begins as legend soon becomes choice as an impossible task and an eternal destiny merge. Can Kyle and Carissa successfully balance their blossoming love amidst the stark contrast of their individual life paths, or will they lose everything—including each other—when dreams meet reality?

8.  Share an excerpt (up to 800 words).

Carissa smiled as she walked through her apartment building’s main door and sang the familiar tune that had been building into a sweet melody over the last few weeks, as she climbed the stairs in the dead of night. Out of habit, she checked the hallway before strolling inside her pristine apartment.

She set her keys on the entryway’s table and dropped her bag underneath it. Through the curtains, the city’s lights cut a pale path of light into her home. She fumbled on the wall for the overhead light, and the florescent bulbs turned night into day.

Pretending she was dancing with a prince, she twirled into her room and kicked off her shoes, unruffled about them landing on the floor instead of the closet. She curtsied, imagining her in a dress instead of dusty and dirty jeans.

She stopped in the middle of the room. The music notes floated into place, and she smiled, finally holding the song that had taunted her for months with its half-finished melody.

Her feet glided over the polished floors before her knees hit the edge of the decorative rug, as she searched for her violin and the recorder she used.

Happiness carried on the notes as the bow danced with the strings. She moved through the room to its melody, captivated by its pull and the steady pulse of it encircled her heart. The notes rushed through her, taking her to the highest euphoria before she collapsed on the couch. Her chest heaved under labored breath. Too tired to smile, she closed her eyes and waited while the world spun back to a standstill. Never in her life had a piece of music invaded her body and soul. She looked down at her violin, and her arm muscles quivered.

She looked at the recorder on the counter and wished for the powers of levitation. Excited at the prospects on it, she sluggishly pulled herself off the couch. The button clicked as she pressed the stop button, and the digital recorder’s screen pulsed with the word PLAY.

She took a deep breath, sighing with anticipation and worried that it would be for naught. Yet the feeling in the pit of her stomach said it would be amazing, like the kiss she’d shared with Kyle. Her thumb hovered over the button, indecision weighed against the need for sleep that permeated her body.

A gentle knock on her door took the choice from her.

She set the recorder down and walked slowly to the door, curious who would be knocking so early. Standing on tip-toes, she peered through the peephole and saw her neighbor with the dog.

The chain lock stretched between the door and the jamb. “Yes?” she asked hesitantly.

“Hey. I’m sorry to disturb you, but it’s Sunday night, well Monday morning, and you’re playing a little loud. You set my dog off.”

“Oh, my. I’m so sorry. I … I didn’t … I’m so sorry.” She covered her mouth, mortified that her moment of inspiration had come at a cost.

He ran a hand through it sleep tousled hair. “It’s fine. I just wanted to warn you before you woke the entire complex.” He propped his elbow on the doorframe and leaned his head against his hand. “It’s not every morning I get awakened by a concert of dog howls and—” he peered around her “—violin music.”

She rubbed her hands over her face. “I’m sorry. Really, I am. It won’t happen again.”

He shrugged. “There are worse ways to wake up. Besides, I’m usually up in an hour anyway. Maybe we could get coffee one morning?”

“Oh.” This wasn’t what she had expected when he first knocked on her door.

9. Do you have a favorite scene?

That’s a tough one. I really like the humor found between Kyle and his brother-in-law at the mall.

10.  What advice would you give a beginner?

Write the draft first before trying to solve all the issues and asking a million questions. You can fix minor plot issues, but you can’t fix what isn’t there.

Cara Bristol

I’m going to be thoroughly honest – I’m geeking out a bit on this interview.  My daughter gave me her Naughty Words for Nice Writers book and I fell in love with it.  Cara Bristol has a number of books and I’ve read two and reviewed them (see below).  I’ll continue reading and buying her books – this says a lot because of how busy I am.  She has a lot of books out there to enjoy and I can’t wait to dive into her other books.  Cara Bristol writes science fiction romance novels.  She brings wit and humor to her stories.  Her new book launches today!  Darak Dakonian Alien Mail Order Brides

Four Star Review on Goodreads – Alien Mate

Bristol has created a fun and engaging concept. She hits on the cynicism of our government along with romance – hot sexy alien romance. Star is convicted of murdering a crime boss and sent to be a mate to on Dakon an ice world which offers a necessary rock humans need for energy. Torg is hot sexy and a tribal leader. This starts a little slow though the sexy parts are wonderful. Once the action starts, it zips through the story keeping you interested and involved in the story. The critical point where Star and Torg become angry at each other (necessary in all romance genre) is over too quick. However, the pacing on the rest of the story is good and enjoyable. The women in the story are funny and smart. The men in the story are hunks and smart enough to trust their women. Overall it’s a good balance of sexy, romance, suspense, and science fiction.

Four Star Review on Goodreads – Naughty Words for Nice Writers

Bristol broaches a topic not covered by most writers – naughty words! While she includes lists and lists (which is helpful for those who write love / sex scenes, she does it with class, humor, and sincerity. She covers the typical words most writers are looking to expand on without sounding corny but she also covers other topics like spanking and BDSM. The lists are easy to read and refer to. They are organized in a logical way. One topic leads naturally into another. This was a quick read but more than that, it is a great reference book for any author writing love scenes to have sitting next to their writing space.

Author Bio:

USA Today Bestselling Author Cara Bristol writes character driven science fiction romance with humor, heart, and heat. She loves introducing new readers to science fiction romance, and likes to say she writes sci-fi for readers who don’t like sci-fi.  When she’s not writing (ha ha ha – she’s almost always writing) she enjoys traveling to exotic destinations and chillaxin’ with her favorite reality TV shows. Cara lives in Missouri with her own alpha hero, her husband.

Now for the questions:

1. Tell us about yourself.

I’m living the dream! I always wanted to get published, and nine years ago I achieved it. My first books were erotic romances, but now I write science fiction romance. My emphasis is on the characters and getting them to fall in love—within a futuristic setting. I’ve published more than 35 books, 15 with the publishers. In 2014, I went Indie. I’ve hit the USA Today bestseller list twice. I live in Missouri with my husband. When I’m not writing, I enjoy traveling to foreign destinations and watching my favorite reality TV shows.

2. When did you know you wanted to be an author?

I started writing fiction about 25 years go just as a hobby. Once I got published, writing morphed (quite quickly) into a full-time job. I had worked as a newspaper reporter and PR professional, so I’ve always written. But no job was as enjoyable as writing romance.

3. What genres do you like to read?  Are these the same genres you write in?

I do read in my genre, SFR, but also I read paranormal, Regency, and some contemporary.

4. Is your book for adults, young adults or children?

Adults.

5. What is your current release or project?

Darak: Dakonian Alien Mail Order Brides #1 (Intergalactic Dating Agency). It’s part of a three book science fiction romantic comedy series. It’s a light, fun, funny book. Pure escapism. It’s a spinoff from my Alien Mate series. In Alien Mate, human women travel to planet Dakon to become the brides of aliens; in this new series, the aliens come to Earth.

6. Tell us about the key characters

Lexi is a pastry chef who comes from a well-to-do family. She’s the black sheep, who hasn’t lived up to her mother’s expectations. She intends to use Darak to get back at her family, but after meeting him, she can’t go through it. Darak is a hot, sexy horned alien she meets through the Intergalactic Dating Agency.

7. What is your blurb or synopsis of the book?

Revenge is best served sweet with a hot, horned alien

Free-spirited pastry chef Lexi Sutterman has discovered that true love is pie in the sky. The only thing more difficult than finding an Earth man willing to commit is pleasing her wealthy, hypercritical family who view her as a failure. So she’s given up on both, focusing her energy on her new bakery. Now that her uber successful little sister manages to nab a well-heeled fiancé, Lexi fights back by joining the Intergalactic Dating Agency. She plans to bring a huge, purple, tentacled alien as her plus-one to the wedding.

Darak of planet Dakon isn’t purple or tentacled—he’s just seven feet of horned alien hotness. To get a woman on his world, a guy has to literally win the lottery. Tired of waiting for the Fates to send him a female, he joins the dating service to meet a nice Earth girl to call his own. He recognizes Lexi as his true mate, but realizes convincing her they’re meant to be together forever and not just a weekend will be no cake walk.

But when a sweet-tart pastry chef and a horned alien hottie fall in love, everyone might get their just desserts…

8.  Share an excerpt (up to 800 words).

What rock had I been hiding under not to have known about this? The Intergalactic Dating Agency was plastered all over the ’Net—reviews, interviews, YouTube vids of the program as well as of the dates women had gone on, and even wedding ceremonies with the aliens. I stared at one woman’s purple groom. He was kind of cute in a tentacled way.

I logged onto the agency’s website and nibbled a fingernail still tasting of cherries. I read the introductory materials, the FAQs, the client testimonials. Watched the promo video of smiling couples horseback riding into the sunset. Did I really have the guts to bring an alien to my little sister’s wedding?

Welcome to the Intergalactic Dating Agency! We’re thrilled you’ve decided to use our exclusive dating service. Everyone deserves to love and be loved, so we’ve scoured the galaxy to find your perfect match, the partner who will make all your dreams come true…

Before we can identify your Mr. Right, we need to get a little information about you and what you’re looking for. Please complete this short 45-minute questionnaire.

Forty-five minutes? That’s what they considered short? I almost gave up then, but the mental picture of my mother’s face when I showed up to dinner with an alien convinced me the time investment was worth it.

The first section was easy, just vital statistics: age (twenty-nine), eye color (brown), hair color (brown), distinguishing features or marks (tattoo of a cupcake on my left shoulder), height (5’6”), and weight (ahem). I answered truthfully, except for the last question in which I shaved off a few pounds. It wasn’t a complete lie. I used to weigh that. My freshman year of high school.

Why did you decide to seek an alien mate?

“Torqueing my mother’s gourd” probably wasn’t the right answer. Deferred adolescent rebellion? Ditto. I couldn’t be too honest, or I’d be screened out of the program.

“I’m looking for true love, and I’m willing to search the galaxy to find it,” I wrote. I didn’t think I had a snowball’s chance of finding amore with an extraterrestrial, but I’d give the agency a shot at helping me out. As long as I got a date for the wedding weekend, I’d consider this experience a win.

How open-minded are you? Are you aware aliens may differ physically, socially, and culturally from humans?

Well, I hoped so! What would be the point of bringing a button-downed preppie home to meet Mom?

“The heart does not see differences, it sees only similarities,” I wrote.

There were more questions designed to ascertain my psychological suitability to date an alien, and then the agency got down to specifics with a check-the-box multiple-choice section.

Your match will be based on your social and psychological profile. However, if there is an alien species you would prefer not to date, please indicate by marking the box. Dakonian, Xenian, Farian, Parseon, Arcanian, Malodonian, Rotarian, Slime Crawler, Dragonian…

I had no idea what any of those people were, but going on name alone, I omitted Slime Crawler. It just didn’t sound like we would be a good fit. Then I nixed Dragonian. It sounded too much like dragon. I wanted to shock my mother, not ruin my little sister’s wedding by having my plus-one set the gazebo on fire.

Our alien male clients are generally humanoid in appearance; however, they may have physical traits that humans do not. Are there any features that would be unacceptable to you? Please mark the box.

Tentacles

Scales

Tail

Horns

Antennae

Webbed hands or feet

Rotae

Non-humanoid flesh tones such as purple, blue, green, gold, red, or silver.

Phosphorescence

Claws

Wings

Extreme height

They all sounded perfect to me, although I had to look up what rotae meant. Turned out some aliens didn’t have legs, they had wheels. Huh. Who knew? After giving it some consideration, I nixed rotae because there were a lot of steps going down to the garden gazebo area where my sister would be getting married, and I would hate for him to roll down the stairs and hurt himself.

Although a gold-toned alien would be richly appropriate, and a silver one would match the color spoon my mother had in her mouth, I hoped for purple. A nice, bright violet with complementary yellow tentacles. If he glowed in the dark, that would be even better.

It took me 44.5 minutes to complete the questionnaire. I read it over, tweaked a few of my answers then touched submit.

Thank you for completing the profile questionnaire. We will be in touch when your perfect match is found.

9. Do you have a favorite scene?

Many favorites, beginning with the opening scene when Lexi decides to shock her mother by bringing an alien to the wedding, then when she and Darak get mugged one evening, and finally near the end when her sister is about to get married. They all made me chuckle.

10.  What advice would you give a beginner?

Don’t genre hop. Pick a genre and stick to it. Be prolific and build a backlist fast. Write a series.

Christopher Penczak

My next interview is with an author I’ve enjoyed his work. I feel privileged to have him agree to an interview.  He’s well-known in the Pagan / New Age community, has founded the Temple of Witchcraft – Christopher Penczak.  He’s written a number of books including The Inner Temple of Witchcraft, The Temple of Shamanic Witchcraft, The Witch’s Shield, The Outer Temple of Witchcraft, The Living Temple of Witchcraft, The Gates of Witchcraft and many more.

Author Bio:

Christopher Penczak is a modern Witch working in the Temple of Witchcraft tradition and community he helped co-found. His practice focuses on the intersection of Love, Will, and Wisdom as an ethos for today’s Witch, and focuses upon relationships with the plant realm, the patterns of astrology, and the use of trance in the Craft. He is the author of many books, including the Temple of Witchcraft series and The Mighty Dead. His vision is of an evolving Witchcraft culture making magick accessible to all, yet preserving the heart of the mystery. For more information, visit www.christopherpenczak.comand www.templeofwitchcraft.org.

Now for the questions:

1. Tell us about yourself.

Well, I am queer polyamorous Witch living in New Hampshire, co-creating a tradition, temple and a punishing company with my two partners in life, magick and business, Steve Kenson and Adam Sartwell, along with many other amazing members of our community and business. I am a Taurus Sun sign. Virgo Moon sign and Cancer Rising. I have degree in vocal performance and music business, but ended up as an occult writer, after a brief flirtation with the world of hard science and chemistry early on in my education. I’ve written over twenty-five books and a few of them have won some industry awards. While a Witch at heart, I consider myself an occultist and I’m always on the quest for the theory of everything!

2. When did you know you wanted to be an author?

I actually don’t think I ever really wanted to be an author, which is kind of funny now. I was a musician and I wanted to be a rock star at one point. Then I got the opportunity to work in the music industry, and see people who were more talented than me, still struggle and generally not be happy, with a few exceptions, and realized that was not the life for me. I was teaching Witchcraft informally with a study group, and in a small egalitarian coven, and soon that got more demanding. After some unwanted spiritual direction and guidance by my matron goddess, I found myself without a job and teaching full time, and turning a few notebooks into manuals and books for classes. My first book was on astrology and magick, still a passion of mine, and it was never released, but was kind of like a grad thesis for me, and got turned into tons of class notes for those early years. That led me to developing the material in City Magick, Spirit Allies and the Temple of Witchcraft, drawn from my own teachers’ foundations, and my personal experience. Once I started writing, I just found myself with more to share and say, and kept writing. I don’t think it sunk in that I was an author until I had my third book, Inner Temple out, and was getting a lot of attention as an author. But at heart, I wanted to be, and am, a teacher, before being an author. I just use writing as a medium to teach.

3. What genres do you like to read?  Are these the same genres you write in?

While I do read a lot of Witchcraft books and general metaphysical-New Age, I am interested in consciousness in general, and will read new science and in particular, books in esoteric Hinduism and Buddhism. I love a good conspiracy theory for fun, even if it is true, and I’m an avid fan of comics and graphic novels, ranging from the X-men and Spider-man to the esoteric lines from Vertigo and America’s Best Comics. Big fan of the authors Grant Morrison and Alan Moore. I don’t read a lot of fiction at the moment, but when I do, its usually some form of sic-fi or fantasy. Just finished The Witches of New York by Ami McKay and the Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker.

4. Is your book for adults, young adults or children?

I”m writing occult and metaphysical how to, generally for adults, though I have a lot of younger readers, and one book in particular was written for young men, called Sons of the Goddess.

5. What is your current release or project?

My most recent book is The Casting of Spells, the first in a series of practical spell books. The follow up on Candle Magick is in production now, to be released in 2019.

6. Tell us about the key characters

NA

7. What is your blurb or synopsis of the book?

The book so both on the practical aspect of writing and casting spells in the form of petitions and sacred script, and an understanding of how magick works through getting clarity on your own desires and needs and effectively communicating those desires to the whole self and the universe. We work on different aspects of a petition spell, from the practical of paper, pens and formulas for magickal links, to meditations and energy work for clarity and focus to prepare for the spell.

8.  Share an excerpt (up to 800 words).

9. Do you have a favorite scene?

My favorite part of the book is the metaphorical look of the candle and the lamp as an image for the soul. In our tradition of Witchcraft, we believe there is a three part soul, generated called the Higher, Middle and Lower souls. They have many different names and correspondences depending on the system or tradition, including those in psychology, but in our Temple of Witchcraft, we call them the Watcher, Namer and Shaper. We look at the lamp as a symbol for the practitioner. The flame is the higher soul illuminating the way. The lamp and wick is the terrestrial aspect, the middle soul. The liquid oil, the fuel, is the lower soul. Together they form the whole practitioner, and the light we use in spells and candle magick really comes from the light of our souls working together as the lamp.

10.  What advice would you give a beginner?

I think the process has been to study magick, do magick and then realize you are the magick. But it requires the study and the doing to get to that realization Keep a meditative and magickal practice. Do something, even a little something, every day. It’s a way of life. Integrate it into the life you are already living, and be open to it changing that life for the better.

Morgan Redstone

My second interview is with an author I met online.  She writes naughty novels about fetishes but they are super funny.  Her first book I wrote the following review:

Kidnapped by a Bondage Cult by Morgan Redstone

Witty and funny this story is entertaining and inventive. Redstone has created a character who sweet, daring, and honest about her fetishes. Her story is unique while still being descriptive without edging to vulgar.  This was a quick and fun read.

Author Bio:

I was born on Feb. 29, 1980.  I live on the east coast of the United States and work in Information Technology during the day, but spend the nights trying to write the most entertaining adventure-smut I can.

I love video games and often have a hard time dragging myself away from them to write adventure-smut, but there’s not enough smut in video games so eventually I reach a point where I need to get my fix.  My favorite is the Saints Row games by the now defunct Volition games.  I hear another company acquired the rights to that series.  I want to write the next chapters for that game.  Other games I play include MineCraft, SecondLife and Diablo III.  Nothing too surprising there, right?

also a big fan of Anime and Manga.  I have a big collection in my library and you’ll see those influences in my writing.

Now for the questions:

1.     Tell us about yourself.

Well, I’m Morgan Redstone.  I have a deep and vivid imagination that lends itself to writing strange and colorful stories.  I’ve chosen to use this power not for good, nor for evil, but for writing sexy things.  I became an erotica author because I enjoy writing stories that include fantasy, sci-fi or urban fiction elements, but also include a heavy dose of sex, BDSM elements and adult humor.  I couldn’t really call my writing just ‘Sci-fi’ or just ‘Urban Fantasy’ now could I?   Someone would pick it up and start reading and then their eyes would explode out of their face in a comically awful incident.

2.     When did you know you wanted to be an author?

I’ve wanted to be an author since about my first year of college.  I decided to write erotica because I couldn’t seem to find any that I really liked. It always went too far or not far enough. I know my tastes (if you’ve read my books, you know them too.) and I really wanted something that would make me happy. I wrote a few stories and posted them on the internet under a different name and at some point I’ll rewrite and publish them with Amazon. The replies and commentary for my stories was always “This is really, really creative!” and “What the hell did I just read?” Those sorts of comments make an author of weird erotica very happy indeed.

Once I started putting my works out in the world, there was no stopping the idea. I can’t stop writing erotica. It’s too much fun at this point.

3.     What genres do you like to read?  Are these the same genres you write in?

I like to read urban fantasy, traditional fantasy, horror and to a lesser extent science fiction.  My favorite authors are Patricia Briggs, Jim Butcher, Reki Kawahara, Stjepan Sejic and Mike Allen.  I like to write urban fantasy, traditional fantasy and scifi, but my horror never seems scary to me.  Maybe I’m just immune to being scared of my own stories, maybe it’s not any good.   I think I’ll stick to what I know.

4.     Is your book for adults, young adults or children?

*Laughs* Moving on…

5.     What is your current release or project?

I just finished a collection of my first six books that were published on Amazon as Kindle books.  The “Sisters of Silence Sexy Sextet” or SoSSS as it appears in my files, is the culmination of my work so far as an erotica author.

I’m also currently working on a collection of short stories that are Halloween themed and want to have those out by October, 2018.

6.     Tell us about the key characters.

The main character of the SoSSS is Nikki.  She is a kinky girl who works at a fetish themed club called the Kinky Princess.  Since she’s into latex and bondage, she gets kidnapped by a bondage nun cult called the Sisters of Silence.  They toss her to the thing that swears it’ll destroy the world if it doesn’t get appeased once a year.  That thing is Vaslarath, the other main character of the SoSSS.  He’s a tentacle/blob monster from a different reality and he eats emotions.  (The harder to produce, the more filling and delicious they are!)  Nikki and Vaslarath are very compatible so they begin the process of fusing into one being after Nikki and Vaslarath have a cosmic-grade, sexual experience.  That’s why she is the head of the cult now, she tamed the scary beast.

7.     What is your blurb or synopsis of the book?

As I started explaining, Nikki and Vaslarath begin fusing.  Other things occur around town and they start getting hunted by another woman with a strange magical mask.  Soon they’re embroiled in rescuing kidnapped girls that are being experimented on by a bad guy.  They have a few good times with each other in-between serious periods and eventually catch up with the missing girls and the baddies.  Will they survive the encounter?!  Of course they will, I like happy endings, no pun intended.

8.     Share an excerpt (up to 800 words).

From the Bonus book, only available in the SoSSS.

[Nikki and Vaslarath share a body.  He’s a morphic monster that lives within her and makes clothing for her; usually sexy things or items to bind her up so he can feed off her lusty emotions.  They are currently in a small, hidden village of blob monsters on a tropical island on a different dimension and dealing with the fact that the village elder isn’t happy that Vaslarath brought humans here.]

“More humans are on their way.  Are they also friends of yours?” he said.

“No, but we’ll go deal with ‘em for ya.”  I replied.  I figured I could tell them they went to the wrong island of blob monsters and that there were no blob monsters here.  We exited out of the glassy cave entrance and walked down the beach a ways.  Vaslarath shifted my outfit to be more like that of some kind of adventuring sailor.   Leather pants and a light airy shirt, a large floppy hat with a feather, knee high boots and a belt with a rapier and other pouches.  I pulled the rapier out.

“Can I actually stab someone with this?” I asked.

“Yes, and then I’ll be poked through another person and it’ll be gross and weird.”

I put the rapier away.  “Gotcha.” I walked down the beach until I saw them landing.  It was two women in a large, flat boat.  There was some kind of weird mechanical thing in the middle of the boat that looked like a chunky wooden man bent up uncomfortably.  I waved at them and yelled thinking they probably weren’t going to be hostile on the spot.

The blonde noticed me first.  She had large fox ears that perked up when I yelled and a bushy fox tail that rippled.  I think she was nervous.  She was wearing what looked like what I’d seen in an old Japanese movie, a white kimono top with red pants.  I think that meant she was some kind of priestess.  Her outfit was a little bit more complicated with threads of gold running through it that shimmered like fire when she moved.

The one with black hair poked some buttons on the wooden man and the boat stopped moving.  He hissed as steam erupted from somewhere and then he promptly fell over with a thunk.   She screamed and ran around doing things.  The one with the fox ears grabbed a small anchor and threw it on the beach.   She went to step out of the boat and stopped, pulling her foot back like she couldn’t get wet.   She reached down and gently touched the water and winced.

“Say, Honored host, could you please pull us in a bit?”  She asked.  Her voice sounded like that of an angel.  I could have just grabbed the rope with a sudden tentacle and yanked them up, but I decided to do it the hard way.  I grabbed the wet rope and pulled them up, perhaps a bit too quickly; an act which caused the black haired woman to yelp and stumble right off the boat.  I felt bad for her and went to go rescue her.

I pulled her out of the ocean as she sputtered and swore.  “Dammit Hoshiko!” she said “Tell me when you’re going to do something!”  She looked at me and her eyes got wide.  “Well, you’re not Hoshiko.  Uh, sorry!”

“No, my apologies.” I said, my voice sounding weird.   I understood the words but they weren’t the ones I was speaking. “I’m the one who tried to pull your boat up.  Your friend appeared to not want to get wet.”

“Yeah, anything under scalding is too cold for her.” She said as I helped her to shore.  When we got to dry land she pulled an ornate hair comb from her things, rubbed a pearl on it and whispered something.   A pale, lavender light circled around her and just like that she was dry, her hair was combed, her makeup was perfect and she looked like a million bucks.   Since they weren’t soaked any more I could see her robes were really a deep, deep purple.

“There!” she announced putting the comb away.  “That’s better.” She looked up at me.  “So hi, I’m Silky and that over there is Hoshiko.”  She pointed at the blonde who’d been having a hard time stifling a chuckle.

“Hi Silky,” I said.  “I’m Nikki.” And I almost added ‘And this is Vaslarath!’, but I didn’t because I’m smart.  “Nice to meet you.”

Hoshiko gave a light bow and smiled.  “We’re on a fool’s errand to get Silky a friend.  She’s convinced this is ‘Forthgarth Island’, named after the brave and inebriated explorer who only seemed to find things that had already been found, albeit sometimes a new route to said found things.  Anyway, there are supposed to be friendly ooze monsters here who are able to store large amounts of energy that people like Silky can channel into her magic.  Seen any?”

“Nope!” I said.  “Not-a-one.  Nope!  No blob monsters here!” I replied.

Hoshiko blinked.  Silky cocked her head to one side.  “Say-“ she said “How did you get here?”

“Uh.  My boat shipwrecked and I was the only survivor.”  I replied.

“What was the name of the ship?” Silky asked.

“Uh.” I said while my mind frantically thought of ship names. “The Neener, the Pinto and the Santa Maria!  Three ships sent to explore the world.”

They both looked at each other and back to me.  “So why wreck here?   This is pretty close to a normal shipping lane and most of the planet has been mapped at this point.  Who funded your journey?  What dock did you leave from?”

“Fine!” I said.  “I’m not from a shipwreck!  I came from another world!”

Hoshiko and Silky looked at each other and back to me again.   “Your shipwreck story was more believable.” Said Silky.  “Nobody has been able to get off world in over a thousand years.”

“She would know that if she was from our world Silky.” Said Hoshiko.  She shrugged.  “I just don’t think she’s lying like all the other times she said anything.”

I admit it, I’m bad at lying.  I steeled my nerves and tried for one last fib.  I put my fingers on the bridge of my nose and took a deep breath before beginning.  “Look, I didn’t want to tell you about being from a different world, but seriously, there aren’t any blob monsters here.  There’s probably not a blob monster for miles.”

Everyone turned as something rustled in the dense underbrush.  A tiny blob monster popped right out and stared at us.  He started screaming something telepathically at everyone and we all winced.  I felt Vaslarath sigh in the back of my head.

9.     Do you have a favorite scene?

Yep.  I really like the fantasy that starts in book 2 and is most of book 4.  I also really like the rather touching scene in book 5 where Vaslarath tells Nikki that he’s fallen in love with her and I like that she reciprocates.  That’s probably a spoiler.

10.  What advice would you give a beginner?

The hardest thing about starting is dealing with judgement.  I remember writing something when I was really young and having my mother nit-pick and gripe and generally take a crap all over it.  I put down writing until I was in college and this time only let non-parents read it.  I made the mistake of letting my sister proofread it.  She tried to rewrite everything in passive voice, which I hate with a passion.  When I explained why she declared that my writing was terrible and that I was an ungrateful brat.  Protip: Close friends and spouse first.  Friends that would be interested second.  Parents and family can go buy a copy when you’re famous.
