They Hailed Her Liberty

Audiobook Tour: Liberty by Kim Iverson Headlee

Author: Kim Iverson Headlee

Narrator: Lillian Rachel

Length: 13 hours and 45 minutes

Publisher: Pendragon Cove Media

Released: Aug. 2, 2018

Genre: Historical Romance

How hard would you fight for a chance at impossible love? From the critically acclaimed, award-winning pen of Kim Iverson Headlee comes the thrilling, poignant tale of love across a vast social divide. Winner of the 2015 International BooksGoSocial Best Book. Betrayed by her father and sold as payment of a Roman tax debt to fight in Londinium’s arena, gladiatrix-slave Rhyddes feels like a wild beast in a gilded cage. Celtic warrior blood flows in her veins, but Roman masters own her body. She clings to her vow that no man shall claim her soul, though Marcus Calpurnius Aquila, son of the Roman governor, makes her yearn for a love she believes impossible. Groomed to follow in his father’s footsteps and trapped in a politically advantageous betrothal, Aquila prefers the purity of combat on the amphitheater sands to the sinister intrigues of imperial politics, and the raw power and athletic grace of the flame-haired Libertas to the adoring deference of Rome’s noblewomen. When a plot to overthrow Caesar ensnares them as pawns in the dark design, Aquila must choose between the Celtic slave who has won his heart and the empire to which they both owe allegiance. Trusting no man and knowing the opposite of obedience is death, the only liberty offered to any slave, Rhyddes must embrace her arena name, Libertas – and the love of a man willing to sacrifice everything to forge a future with her.

Kim Iverson Headlee lives on a farm in southwestern Virginia with her family, cats, goats, Great Pyrenees goat guards, someone else’s cattle, half a million honey bees, and assorted wildlife. People and creatures come and go, but the cave and the 250-year-old house ruins—the latter having been occupied as recently as the midtwentieth century—seem to be sticking around for a while yet. Kim has been an award-winning novelist since 1999 (Dawnflight first edition, Sonnet Books, Simon & Schuster) and has been a student of Arthurian lore for more than half a century. Her novel LIBERTY was a 2007 HOLT Medallion finalist for its first edition (HQN Books, Harlequin, 2006; writing as Kimberly Iverson), and its second edition won the international BooksGoSocial Best Book award in 2015.

I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Kim Iverson Headlee. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it. Name: Marcus Calpurnius Aquila Age: mid-20s Gender: male Birthplace: Rome, Italia Profession: politician in training Marcus has the body of a football quarterback: muscular but not overly bulky. In present-day terms he tops 6’ in height, 220 pounds, and has a fading tan from having spent the past two years living under the paler northern sun of Britannia Province. He has some minor scars from his arena bouts, but nothing specifically mentioned in the book as being an issue for him.
Q&A with Kim Iverson Headlee about Marcus Aquila
  • Who is the significant other in your character’s life?
    • The woman who empowers his soul is Rhyddes, a gladiatrix-slave whom he knows by her arena name “Libertas.”
  • Tell us about this significant other character, please.
    • Libertas is the first woman Marcus has ever known who does not swoon over his wealth, charms, or looks. She sees him for who he is: a man struggling to free himself from the bonds of duty, and he comes to appreciate that very much. He recognizes in her a kindred spirit in that regard, for she is oath-bound to obey her masters too. Although her beauty attracts him to her, it is her unconquerable spirit that ultimately leads him to want to sacrifice everything to win her love.
  • How does your hero dress?
    • In a toga on the Senate floor, and in scanty armor on the arena floor. He prefers the scanty armor, and so do his legions of female admirers.
  • Is the character book-smart, self-taught, widely-experienced?
    • Marcus has had all the educational privileges offered to Rome’s aristocratic citizens, so in that regard he possesses a fair degree of “book smarts,” but he is also widely experienced because of his arena exploits… and the epic after parties.
  • What is your character’s viewpoint on wealth?
    • Unlike most Roman aristocrats, Marcus believes that his wealth and status should be used to help people rather than to control and exploit them.
  • On what special skills does your character rely?
    • Although his being an aristocrat exempts him from fights to the death, he is a highly skilled swordsman in his own right—and he would never have believed that this skill would save his life and the life of the woman he loves.
  • Are any of his skills a source of pride or embarrassment, and if so, which ones and why?
    • His predilection for arena combat is an extreme source of embarrassment for his family, particularly his father, Governor Agricola. In fact, it becomes a major point of contention between them, and Marcus’s desire to consort with Libertas further widens the rift.
  • Is he close to family?
    • Marcus enjoys a very close relationship with his mother, Lady Loreia, who in the way of all mothers understands him better than he understands himself at times.
  • Can your hero keep a secret (why or why not)?
    • Marcus must keep his budding relationship with Libertas a secret, for to do otherwise would cause him to be banned from polite Roman society. He doesn’t care about that so much, but he knows it would stain his family too, and he has no wish to inflict that pain upon them.
  • What is your character’s biggest need at the beginning of the story?
    • Marcus needs his father to accept him for who he is, not for how he can enhance Agricola’s political career.
  • If your character could make any one thing happen, what would it be?
    • Once he decides that Libertas is the woman with whom he wants to spend the rest of his life, he will stop at nothing—even sacrificing all of his wealth and power—to make marriage with her possible.
  • To honor the person who chose to share your story, please answer the following questions.
  • Why do you think your writer chose to write about you?
    • She chose to write about Libertas—Rhyddes. I am merely a facet of Rhyddes’s story.
  • What do you wish your writer had not told others about you?
    • I wish that she had not gone into such detail about my strained relationship with my father. That is a sensitive personal matter for me, and one I do not readily share with anyone.
  • What other character from your book do you think your writer should write a book about, and why?
    • I would like to know more about Rhyddes’s brother Owen. Of all her brothers, Owen is the closest to her in age and spirit, and I imagine his story is a fine one too.
  • Why do you think your writer loves to write?
    • Who can say? But if I were to venture a guess, it would be that she must love to entertain people with her words, much in the same way that I love to entertain people with my swordplay.
  • Is there anything you’d like to say to your writer?
    • Thank you, Kim Iverson Headlee, for rising to the challenge of presenting the story of Rhyddes’s life in such a faithful and poignant manner.

The Regency Matchmaker Series Book 1
by Celeste Jones
Genre: Historical Romance
Meet Lady Ambrosia Anaconda Algonquin, matchmaker to London’s most discerning citizens. Part fairy godmother, part sorting hat, her methods might be unusual, but she always makes her match.
For Lady Tempest Tapoate, marriage means an end to the tyranny of the aunt and uncle into whose care she was forced when her parents died. She would rather have a stranger select her spouse than allow those two sods to select a husband for her.
James Harley, the Earl of Knox, is in need of an heir. He has righted the family fortunes after mismanagement by his mother and is now in need of a wife to bear a child. Once the deed is done, he expects the two of them will go their separate ways.
When Tempest finds herself with child, rather than share the good news with her husband so that they may each move on with their lives, she realizes that she does not want to be set aside by her spouse. But how long can she keep her secret?
Publisher’s Note:

Although I fell in love as a young girl with William, the boy next door, I married Lord Thomas Harley and am now the Dowager Countess of Knox. And through all the years, I have never stopped thinking about William. Now widowed but still young, I want more in my life than living as a guest in the house I called home during my marriage, and I loathe the idea of being a burden to my grown son. It’s time for me to take control of my life. A visit to Lady Ambrosia, who made a wonderful match for my son and new daughter-in-law, is in order. Is there a man out there for me?

**easily read as a standalone!**
I believe I was destined to be interested in history. One of my distant ancestors, Thomas Aubert, reportedly sailed up the St. Lawrence River to discover Canada some 26 years before Jacques Cartier’s 1534 voyage. Another relative was a 17thCentury “King’s Girl,” one of a group of young unmarried girls sent to New France (now the province of Quebec) as brides for the habitants (settlers) there. My passion for reading made me long to write books like the ones I enjoyed, and I tried penning sequels to my favorite Nancy Drew mysteries. Later, fancying myself a female version of Andrew Lloyd Weber, I drafted a musical set in Paris during WWII.
A former journalist and lifelong Celtophile, I enjoyed a previous career as a reporter/editor for a small chain of community newspapers before returning to my first love, romantic fiction. My stories usually include an Irish setting, hero or heroine, and sometimes all three!
I am a member of the Romance Writers of America, Hearts Through History Romance Writers, and Celtic Hearts Romance Writers. A lifelong resident of Montreal, Canada, I still live there with my own Celtic hero and our two teenaged children.

On one side was a table occupied by some chattering girls, cutting up silk and gold paper; and on the other were trestles and trays, bending under the weight of brawn and cold pies, where riotous boys were holding high revel; the whole completed by a roaring Christmas fire, which seemed determined to be heard in spite of the noise of the others.” ~Persuasion

Debra-Ann Kummoung
I fell in love with Pride & Prejudice when I read it in high school. Something about that time – the courtly manners of society, the clothing, and so many other things. Don’t get me a wrong, I’m a modern girl and wouldn’t last a day without my modern conveniences, but I can still fantasize about that time period.
My husband is my inspiration for Mr. Darcy & Colonel Fitzwilliam (when the good colonel appears in one of my books). My husband has the manners of Darcy but has been a military man like the colonel – so I got both in one man.
Sophie, whether with Kernstock or Bellabone pen name, is from the land of thousands of lakes, home of Santa Claus, and technology giant Nokia, also known as Finland. At age 24 she was bitten by the publishing bug in her native tongue. The bug bit so fiercly that she made her mission to publish all her future stories to wider audience just year after. That she did, and now at 25 her first book written in English is in preorder.
Born and rased with finnish sisu, and beaten in shape with sauna birch leaf brooms, Sophie writes Fantasy and Horror. No genre will be safe from her vigilant and witty writing style though. She will be providing all kinds of stories from short and sweet to long and gritty. None with romantic sub plot though. She focuses on platonic friendships, epic battles beyond tonsil fencing, and the endless ideas leading to world beyond imagination. In short, her muse is obiviously in drugs and needs intervention. Soon she’ll also add Sci-Fi/Dystopian into her fresh list of books and invites in new pen name to the Sophiesphere circle of things.
Deborah E. Pearson found her love of Jane Austen’s work when she was 15 by watching the 1995 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice by Andrew Davies, Over the following years she not only read Miss Austen’s books multiple times but also read several fan fiction books, which led her to begin writing her own Jane Austen Fan Fiction in 2010 as she wished to have a Darcy that fitted the way she saw him.

Books have always been her passion. She started reading at an early age and progressed to full-length books by age nine. The first supernatural book series she read was Dark Shadows, and it sparked her interest in all things paranormal, with a spicy touch of romance mixed in for good measure. She also started writing poetry in grade school and continues to do so today.
Being an avid reader, the consummate daydreamer and an incurable romantic with a Cinderella complex, she started creating her own characters and story lines because she realized she had her own stories to tell.
She is married to John, who believes she can do anything. She has a son, Ty; a daughter, Danika; and four beautiful grandchildren, Aries, Victoria, Maya, and Tobias.
Besides reading and writing, she also enjoys photography, travel, music, and great movies.

Q&A with Narrator Nina Price
  • When did you know you wanted to be an audiobook narrator?
    • I host a morning drive radio show on a radio station in the Silicon Valley, which I’ve done for 25 years. A segment of my show each week called “Unbedtime Stories” features me reading a portion of a book by an up and coming author. When audiobooks became popular I figured that since I’d been reading stories on the radio, I should narrate audiobooks – so I started auditioning and narrating audiobooks.
  • How did you wind up narrating audiobooks? Was it always your goal or was it something you stumbled into by chance?
    • One day, I casually mentioned to a friend and her mother that I was interested in narrating audiobooks. The next day I got a message from my friend’s brother, one of my radio buddies, telling me that his mother heard that I was interested in narrating audiobooks and would he please tell me about his experience. He explained how the system works and what to do. I just followed his suggestions and was amazed that I got to narrate the first book I auditioned for.
  • Did you find it difficult to “break into” audiobook narration? What skill/tool helped you the most when getting started?
    • No. My friend’s suggestions helped me get started and I learned what I needed to learn as I did more books. I’ve done about 40 books to date.
  • A lot of narrators seem to have a background in theatre. Is that something you think is essential to a successful narration career?
    • I don’t have a theatre background but all the actors who narrate audiobooks claim that it is essential.
  • What type of training have you undergone?
    • I completed a very intensive voice acting training at Voice One in San Francisco, several years ago and continue to hone my skills constantly working with various coaches and taking classes.
  • What about this title compelled you to audition as narrator?
    • During the past year I discovered that the books I love narrating the most include the element of history and romance. The audition piece was the scene with Vita meeting Theodore Roosevelt and I really enjoyed preparing that scene. I also auditioned for Bootleg Broadway and got to do that book as well. I guess the publisher thought after that I should also narrate the 3rd book: The End of Camelot.
  • How closely do you prefer to work with authors?
    • I really like to work closely with my authors. Diana Rubino and I work very well together and I’m now narrating several of her other books. I really like to pronounce names and words correctly and relied on Diana to teach me the correct “neighborhood way” to say some of the vernacular expressions in the New York Saga.
  • Who are your “accent inspirations”?
    • For the New York Saga – I grew up in New York, in Manhattan, and have listened to the way New Yorkers speak my whole life. The character voices in the New York Saga come from the way people I’ve known or have heard speak.
  • How did you decide how each character should sound in this series?
    • As I prep each book I play around with the characters voices and I find that the voices either stick or they don’t as I’m developing them. I’m more kinesthetic than visual so I notice how each character feels in my body and in that way I know where to find each voice.
  • Have there been any characters that you really connected with?
    • In the New York Saga I connected most strongly with Vita and Vikki who are the heroines of the 1st book and 3rd book, respectively. I connected with Billy, the hero of Bootleg Broadway because he’s a musician and because I spent so many hours being him. However, like his family, I had trouble connecting with some of the choices he made.
  • What’s next for you?
    • Right now I’m narrating several of Diana’s other books: For Love and Loyalty which involves King Richard III and time travel, and Fakin’ It a modern day rom com which involves what happens when a popular hero steps out of a novel and into real life.
“Songs of the Day” for BOOTLEG BROADWAY (1931)
  • Just a Gigolo – Ted Lewis and His Orchestra
  • Minnie the Moocher – Cab Calloway and His Cotton Club Orchestra
  • Mood Indigo – Duke Ellington
  • Stardust – Isham Jones
  • I Got Rhythm – Red Nichols
Dream Cast
Diana Rubino’s Picks for BOOTLEG BROADWAY
  • Billy McGlory – Leonardo DiCaprio
  • Pru Muller McGlory – Gwyneth Paltrow
  • Greta Schliessmeyer – Scarlett Johansen

Toiling over the mind-numbing work, Vita conjured up her favorite daydream: an elegant brownstone with lacy iron gates, bay windows, polished floors, marble fireplaces. No trash flung down air shafts, no shared toilets, no backyard privies…above Fourteenth Street.

She especially loves books with an element of history in them: historical novels, memoirs, biographies, although she’s narrated books in many genres. Q&A with Author Diana Rubino
  • Tell us about the process of turning your book into an audiobook.
    • My publisher, The Wild Rose Press, auditioned some narrators and sent me samples. When Nina finished narrating it, Wild Rose released it and put it on sale with retailers.
  • Do you believe certain types of writing translate better into audiobook format?
    • Adventure and suspense translate well, as long as the narrator has an animated voice. My books, with characters who have different actors, came out really well, because Nina does great accents and different voice inflections.
  • How closely did you work with your narrator before and during the recording process? Did you give them any pronunciation tips or special insight into the characters?
    • We spoke on the phone a few times, and discussed the characters and their backgrounds. When she had a question about the pronunciation of a word, I either spelled it out phonetically or sent her a video of someone saying the word or phrase.
  • Were there any real life inspirations behind your writing?
    • Yes, FROM HERE TO FOURTEENTH STREET’s heroine Vita is based on my great-grandmother, a businesswoman, wife and mother. She was way ahead of her time. I always have historical events as backdrops for my books. BOOTLEG BROADWAY is set during ProhibitIon, and THE END OF CAMELOT is centered around the John F. Kennedy assassination.
  • How do you manage to avoid burn-out? What do you do to maintain your enthusiasm for writing?
    • I pace myself, I write 2500 words a day and sometimes more if I’m on a roll. My enthusiasm never wanes, because I’m a huge history buff, I love doing the research, and my passion for it comes out in my stories.
  • Are you an audiobook listener? What about the audiobook format appeals to you?
    • I listen to audiobooks on long car trips. It’s convenient to listen to books while doing something else, driving, as a passenger in a car, doing chores, etc.
  • Is there a particular part of this story that you feel is more resonating in the audiobook performance than in the book format?
    • The dialogue is very animated and authentic throughout all three books. Nina does great New York and ‘wiseguy’ accents.
  • How did you celebrate after finishing this novel?
    • I always celebrate by recharging my batteries—usually by reading my favorite genres, biographies, mysteries, and paranormal novels.
  • What gets you out of a writing slump? What about a reading slump?
    • I’ve never been a slump; I make sure I reach my 2500-word goal every day, even if it’s not my best output. I can always go back and rewrite.
  • In your opinion, what are the pros and cons of writing a stand-alone novel vs. writing a series?
    • A series allows the reader to get to know the characters and become familiar with them. Stand-alones don’t have that advantage.
  • What bits of advice would you give to aspiring authors?
    • Keep writing. Keep practicing. Most of all, don’t ever give up on your dream. Just having a dream makes you very special. If you get impatient because it’s taking so long, just ask yourself this: Why does 16-year Scotch take 16 years? Some things are worth waiting for.
  • What’s next for you?
    • I’m writing my next biographical novel, about Edith (Mrs. Theodore) Roosevelt.
“Songs of the Day” for FROM HERE TO FOURTEENTH STREET (1894-5)
  • The Band Played On – Dan Quinn
  • The Sidewalks of New York – Dan Quinn
  • The Liberty Bell – U.S. Marine Band
  • My Pearl is a Bowery Girl – Dan Quinn
  • My Best Girl’s a New Yorker – Edward M. Favor

For a duchess with practical desires, falling in love is an inconceivable part of her plan…
As owner of the Elysium Club which caters to women’s fantasies, Aiden Trewlove is accustomed to introducing adventurous ladies to sin and vice. But he is uncharacteristically intrigued by the mysterious beauty who visits his club one night, yearning to indulge in the forbidden—with him. Drawn to her indomitable spirit, he breaks his rule of never becoming personally involved with his clientele and is determined to fully awaken her desires.
A recent widow, Selena Sheffield, Duchess of Lushing, has never known passion, not until Aiden’s slow, sensual seduction leads her on a journey of discovery and incredible pleasure. But her reasons for visiting the notorious club are not all that they seem.
As Selena’s motives become complicated by love, she finds herself with a most unexpected choice: forge ahead with a secret plan that could secure her future—or follow her heart which could prove ruinous.
New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Lorraine Heath always dreamed of being a writer. After graduating from the University of Texas, she wrote training manuals, press releases for a publicist, articles, and computer code, but something was always missing. When she read a romance novel, she became not only hooked on the genre, but quickly realized what her writing lacked: rebels, scoundrels, and rogues. She’s been writing about them ever since. Her work has been recognized with numerous industry awards including RWA’s RITA(R).

Liberty

Liberty
by Kim Iverson Headlee
Genre: Historical Romance
How hard would you fight for a chance at love across a vast social divide?
Epic.” ~ Drue’s Random Chatter Reviews.
Trusting no man and knowing the opposite of obedience is death, the only liberty offered to any slave, Rhyddes must embrace her arena name, Libertas—and the love of a man willing to sacrifice everything to forge a future with her.

Kim has been a published novelist since 1999 with the first edition of Dawnflight (Sonnet Books, Simon & Schuster) and has been studying the Arthurian legends for nigh on half a century.

The Smuggler’s Escape

The Smuggler’s Escape
by Barbara Monajem
Genre: Historical Romance, Adventure
After escaping the guillotine, Noelle de Vallon takes refuge with her aunt in England. Determined to make her own way, she joins the local smugglers, but when their plans are uncovered, Richard, Lord Boltwood steps out of the shadows to save her. Too bad he’s the last man on earth she ever wanted to see again.
Years ago, Richard Boltwood’s plan to marry Noelle was foiled when his ruthless father shipped him to the Continent to work in espionage. But with the old man at death’s door, Richard returns to England with one final mission: to catch a spy. And Noelle is the prime suspect.
Noelle needs Richard’s help, but how can she ever trust the man who abandoned her? And how can Richard catch the real culprit while protecting the woman who stole his heart and won’t forgive him for breaking hers?
Winner of the Holt Medallion, Maggie, Daphne du Maurier, Reviewer’s Choice and Epic awards, Barbara Monajem wrote her first story at eight years old about apple tree gnomes. She published a middle-grade fantasy when her children were young, then moved on to paranormal mysteries and Regency romances with intrepid heroines and long-suffering heroes (or vice versa). Regency mysteries are next on the agenda.
Barbara loves to cook, especially soups. She used to have two items on her bucket list: to make asparagus pudding (because it was too weird to resist) and to succeed at knitting socks. She managed the first (it was dreadful) but doubts she’ll ever accomplish the second. This is not a bid for immortality but merely the dismal truth.
She lives near Atlanta, Georgia with an ever-shifting population
of relatives, friends, and feline strays.
