Q&A with Author Chris Muhlenfeld- Part II
What do you say to those who view listening to audiobooks as “cheating” or as inferior to “real reading”?
I say they’ve probably never tried an audiobook. Kindle’s whispersync (sync your location between an audiobook and a kindle ebook) is brilliant!
How did you celebrate after finishing this novel?
By writing another! And another! And another!
What gets you out of a writing slump?
There’s only one way out of writing slump: WRITE MORE.
In your opinion, what are the pros and cons of writing a stand-alone novel vs. writing a series?
In today’s market, if you write a standalone novel, it has to be absolutely stellar to ever see any success at all. If you write a series, it only has to be decent in order to find some success.
Have any of your characters ever appeared in your dreams?
I almost never remember my dreams.
What’s your favorite:
Food – Som Tom Kai Kem (Thai spicy green papaya salad with salted egg)
Song – Assimilate by Skinny Puppy
Book – Crime and Punishment
Television show – Dark
Movie – One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
Band – Skinny Puppy
Sports team – What’s that?
City – Tokyo
Are any of those things referenced in appearance in your work?
Yes, many of them.
What bits of advice would you give to aspiring authors?
Write every day on a strict schedule. Don’t stop, even to celebrate. Write every day and keep going.
Do you have any tips for authors going through the process of turning their books into audiobooks?
Find a talented, skilled, efficient, dedicated narrator. This will make the process easy for you.
What’s next for you?
I’m working on getting my next series out there, but have since taken over a magazine, so I’m also doing some non-fiction writing.
And then it went dark…the world’s electrical grid was gone. Who would survive the chaos? For James and Alexa, they saw it unfold from their ranch, which was a blessing. They were awayfrom the chaos, and they thought they were safe. They thought wrong. What will they do? All across the country cities are in crisis. Logan and his family look out from their Manhattan penthouse. The world is crumbling before their eyes. Unprepared, he’s got to do something. They can’t stay. But how can they leave and where will they go? Someone has a solution. It’s Logan’s domestic android. Can he believe a machine? You won’t believe the twists and turns, but you’ll love the adventure. Get it now.

Q&A with Author Chris Muhlenfeld
Tell us about the process of turning your book into an audiobook.
This was my first published work and my first audiobook, so it was all a bit overwhelming. Fortunately, Price Waldman, my amazing narrator, had the experience and knowledge to make the whole process painless.
Do you believe certain types of writing translate better into audiobook format?
I prefer fiction to non-fiction when it comes to audiobooks. There’s a tricky balance between giving characters a spoken voice and letting the words tell the story. This is where a talented narrator makes all the difference.
Was a possible audiobook recording something you were conscious of while writing?
I had hoped to create an audio version, but the idea of an eventual audiobook played no role whatsoever in my writing process.
How did you select your narrator?
I posted samples on acx.com and solicited auditions. After getting several good ones, I really lucked out with Price. He had the perfect voice for this series.
How closely did you work with your narrator before and during the recording process? Did you give them any pronunciation tips or special insight into the characters?
There was quite a bit of back-and-forth through email. We were 14 time zones away from one another, so we’ve never spoken on the phone before. I feel like he’s become a friend all the same, and I hope to work with him again on my next project.
Were there any real-life inspirations behind your writing?
Every time I read the news, I see my fiction creeping into reality. Sometimes, it seems inevitable that we’re going to race toward a scenario a lot like what I’ve written in my book.
How do you manage to avoid burn-out? What do you do to maintain your enthusiasm for writing?
Burn-out has never been an issue for me when it comes to writing. The most important part of my writing practice is having a routine and a schedule, then sticking to it every day. Hmm. I should probably start taking my own advice and get back at it soon.
Are you an audiobook listener? What about the audiobook format appeals to you?
Absolutely. I’ve loved Audiobooks since my first: Crime and Punishment on seventeen(!) cassette tapes. George Guidall’s narration of that masterpiece is one of the greatest audiobook productions ever.
Is there a particular part of this story that you feel is more resonating in the audiobook performance than in the book format?
I think that Price did a fantastic job narrating the action scenes and that these may be more resonant in the audiobook version.
If you had the power to time travel, would you use it? If yes, when and where would you go?
Ah, hell no! My next series involves a form of time travel. I’d never go anywhere near it if it were possible.
