When did you know you wanted to be an author?

I’ve always enjoyed writing and can’t remember a time I haven’t written. I wrote my first short novel, Wobbles – The Wonderful Dog, when I was 9 years old. In 2014, after years within management I decided to write and publish my first major novel; Pages Of Your Life – The Secret Life Of Shirley Rumming. Since then I have averaged one novel per year, except for a period after my father passed away. There’s no surprise that when we experience loss, particularly a death that we see the world differently. My paper people as I like to call my characters went to sleep, and I took priceless time out for family. It was during this period that I decided to write The Belonging; a story about life, one involving loss and grief, hopes and dreams, faith and miracles.  

What genres do you like to read?  Are these the same genres you write in?

When it comes to reading, I am open minded as I believe books are like people, they all have something to offer. Although I do favour contemporary fiction, probably because they depict our world and society, embracing diversity and reflecting different cultural views.   

In regards to my writing, while there has been a persistent sentiment among publishers and agents in the traditional publishing world to stick to one genre, I have not pigeon-holed myself. My stories are about personal experience. My first novel, Pages Of Your Life – The Secret Life Of Shirley Rumming was historical fiction and formed the basis for my, “Secrets Trilogy.” I’ve also written mystery, thriller, suspense and contemporary fiction. Why? Because stories about life are varied, stories about life can’t be pigeon-holed. 

Is your book for adults, young adults or children?

My latest book is generally for adults and young adults. It’s a journey of understanding that deals with issues most can relate to; death, confronting personal problems and coming to understand yourself.

What is your current release or project?

My latest release is a contemporary fiction, “The Belonging.”

Tell us about the key characters

The story is centered around four unforgettable characters who are entwined in each other’s lives, yet somewhat lost in their own. The broken-hearted, the manipulative and the unsuspecting souls continually searching and yearning for answers.

We all want to love and be loved. We want to be safe. We want our loved ones to be safe. Some people simply want money and are guided by materialistic possessions, but all of us want acceptance and a sense of belonging.

Robert, the protagonist is grieving after the death of his wife and struggling to come to terms with everything. This story is about his journey in discovering the truth and meaning of his own existence. Will he find peace, and understanding?

What is your blurb or synopsis of the book?

You never know who, or what, will change your life until it happens. 

After the death of his wife, home health care worker Robert Jackson must re-evaluate his life in Sydney. Facing an uphill battle with grief, he contemplates suicide. 

However, his wife’s best friend Shirley won’t let him give up. But how well does he really know this caring neighbour? And what about the eccentric recluse and the pretentious middle-aged woman whose path he is destined to cross? Appearances can be deceiving. 

The Belonging is a story of four broken souls thrown together by chance and one man’s journey to discover the truth and meaning of his own existence. 

Share an excerpt

Elsie leaned forward with her hands flat on the table and fingers fanned. “You need to accept your loss of Julie, and release yourself from this blame, otherwise it will consume you. You need to let it go.”

Robert’s eyes widened; obviously shocked by the forcefulness of her words. Taking a deep breath, it was time for a change in tone. She touched his hand again. This time, Robert didn’t pull away. Instead he sat still, staring eyes filled with tears.

She leaned closer. “I don’t say this to be harsh, I have known loss and the finger of condemnation has firmly pointed towards me. For years the hands of darkness strangled my hope, and I was haunted by the demons from my past. But this is life. No one is perfect.” She paused and shook her head. “We are our own worst cynics, and while we cannot change what has happened or forget the pain and sadness we have endured, we must learn to forgive.” She paused again and gently squeezed Robert’s hand. Robert nodded as tears flowed.

Elsie wiped her nose and sniffed back her sadness. “Forgiveness is incredibly powerful, Robert, it doesn’t mean condoning, excusing or forgetting. Forgiveness opens our hearts to hope and peace, self-forgiveness allows us to move forward.”

Robert pulled his hand away and readjusted his tie as he straightened himself on the chair. Picking up the napkin he recommenced his folding.

Elsie leaned back and smiled. “Birds.” She picked up her teacup and chuckled.

“What?” Robert placed the napkin onto the table, pushing his hand on top he pressed on his folds.

“You and I are like two injured birds, you want to fix my wings so I can glide through life,” Elsie said, taking another sip of her tea and smiling over the rim. The corners of her lips rose. “At my age and with my condition, gliding would be a wonderful gift. But I have to be realistic. The best this little birdie can expect is to hop and flutter. Maybe I’m an injured canary.” She paused placing her teacup back on the saucer.

She gazed into his eyes. “But for you, Robert, you are young, your wings may have been damaged and you may have crashed, but your wings can be repaired.” Elsie gave him a small smile. “For you, recovery is possible. You are an eagle, strong with a powerful heart. You, young man, can fly. You can glide and soar. You just have to have the courage to spread your wings. Looking back is holding you back. You need to look forward, to the horizon. Have faith, and you will take off.”

Elsie didn’t expect Robert would respond, that wasn’t what she wanted. Her only hope was he would listen, that he would take on what she believed was so vital. Her biggest fear was he would leave for the day and never return.

Do you have a favorite scene?

My best-loved scenes involve the discussions and interactions between Robert and Elsie. Elsie is older and wiser and has a different perspective on life. 

What advice would you give a beginner?

Write about things you know and can relate to. Never give up on your dreams. Never throw what you’ve written away, an undeveloped idea from today may turn into a masterpiece at a later stage.

After college, Michael managed an aquarium import facility in Dallas where fresh- and saltwater fish were quarantined and then distributed to various shops all over the country. Michael then moved to Palm Springs and opened his own aquarium shop, Modern Aquaria. Soon after, he was asked to join DenCom as an official investigator and has since partaken in and led several low-level investigations, except for a high-level trip to Antarctica six months ago.

  • Michael: Who wouldn’t? Half the time, I don’t even know if I’ve done what he asks. I mean, I’m grateful for the opportunity, but I still feel like I need more to work with.
  • Number 173: Do you feel like the work you do is fulfilling?
  • Michael: I mean, didn’t you hear what I just said?
  • Number 173: Correct. I’m just following protocol.
  • Michael: Sometimes. To sum it up, sometimes.
  • Number 173: If you could take a year off from DenCom, would you, and how would you spend your time?
  • Michael: I don’t think I would. Can’t really say why. What I’d do, like, if I had to take a year off? I would probably just focus on my shop, maybe take a short vacation? I don’t really know what I’d do without DenCom.
  • Number 173: Do you feel that DenCom is an intrusive part of your life?
  • Michael: That’s the strange thing: yes, but no. It’s a welcome intrusion. Even given my problems with how Benedict runs the show, I really do enjoy my work, regardless of the pay.
  • Number 173: Alright. Last question: Would you feel comfortable sharing your answers with Benedict?
  • Michael: He wasn’t getting them already?
  • Number 173: He has access, but these interviews are simply a formality. HR stuff, you understand. He’s not going to see these answers if you don’t want him to.
  • Michael: … I do not wish to share these answers.
  • Number 173: Any particular reason?
  • Michael: *Mr. Ridding refused to answer the question, and the interview was terminated at his request*

Gradually Subverting Genre Expectations by S.T. Hoover
When I set out to write Michael Ridding, I knew people would hate it. That’s a pretty grim outlook, I know. But it was the one I had going in. After years of refining the characters and the universe they inhabit, I knew this series would not be for everyone. While Michael Ridding is, on the surface, a thriller novel, there are bigger things at work that have been in motion since before DenCom was even on my radar. Going in, I knew one thing: This was a thriller novel that would not follow the rules. It would lay the groundwork for bigger and stranger things than I’ve seen in the genre before, and I knew that, pass or fail, it would upset readers in one form or another. There is a promise made between an author and a reader when the cover is cracked: I’ll tell you a story. A safe story. One you’ve probably heard before, but it will pass the time. I knew I could never make that promise. So, I’m not shy about saying this book isn’t for everyone. It wasn’t meant to be for everyone, and I doubt most of my books ever will be. If you enjoy the ride, great! Michael is straightforward enough that most readers will have found my warnings unnecessary. But this is just the start of the journey. We’ll be passing some odd attractions along the way and making more than a few unforeseen stops. If you know that going in, then I welcome you aboard. Buckle up. Giveaway

During World War II an experiment was done using a steam engine to see if entering another dimension could create instant transportation of goods and men from one place to another. It unlocked a nightmare from another dimension and only agents from the agency IDEA were able to stop reality from unraveling. The train, known as The Wraith, disappeared along with the scientist who built it.
Now, in present day, a young man hears the distant sound of a train whistle. The rundown train station at the end of the wooded path is somehow regenerating. Plus, people in and around Knorr are acting a little stranger than normal.
The Wraith is coming back, but it’s not coming alone.

Bryan W. Alaspa is a Chicago born and bred author of both fiction and non-fiction works. He has been writing since he sat down at his mother’s electric typewriter back in the third grade and pounded out his first three-page short story. He spent time studying journalism and other forms of writing. He turned to writing as his full-time career in 2006 when he began writing freelance, online and began writing novels and books.
He is the author of over 30 books of both fiction and non-fiction and numerous short stories and articles.
Mr. Alaspa writes true crime, history, horror, thrillers, mysteries, detective stories and tales about the supernatural.

The second of four children born to would-be bohemians, Evan grew up on a diet of independent cinema, junk TV, Shakespeare and chocolate biscuits. As a toddler he drank Dettol and shampoo and stuck forks into power-points. Growing up he was often reminded by his family that he was lucky to have survived past the age of five. While his parents blamed him for being dangerously active and carelessly inquisitive, he lays the responsibility squarely at their feet for repeatedly leaving Dettol, shampoo and forks within his grasp.
He likes to define the resulting confusion from his upbringing as his ‘perspective’ which he now relentlessly channels into works of fiction.
These day’s he likes to prod people instead of power-points. He lives in Sydney and divides his time between co-parenting, fixing his father’s TV settings, changing his mother’s light bulbs, graphic design work, writing and meditation. He claims to have found the secret to perfect parenting, but as the answer is endless patience he’s not sure it’s any use to anyone.

The team that makes will get airlifted out alive and go back home richer for it, the others walk back to a pittance and if they are not careful. They won’t get out at all.

I am grateful that I have this opportunity to share my work and imagination with you. Growing up my head was always stuck in a book or a comic book (before they got fancy and got the moniker “graphic novels”).
More often than not those books were filled with monsters, werewolves and vampires.
Then the likes of Godzilla showed up along with their brethren, born from the very justified fear of the atomic bomb and its consequences.
And that is what I love. Escaping into worlds of monsters and heroes, and sometimes they are one and the same!
Letting my imagination run along and bring into the narrative what I see around me everyday.
I hope that you will enjoy my stories. Find in them a temporary and enjoyable escape of your own.

His debut novel, HENRY FRANKS, was published by Flux in 2012. Both novels have been named a ‘Book All Young Georgians Should Read’ by The Georgia Center for The Book.
His short fiction has appeared in the Demonic Visions series among other anthologies, and he was the featured author for Gothic Blue Book III: The Graveyard Edition. He was also selected as one of the Gentlemen of Horror for 2014.
His poem ‘Electricity and Language and Me’ appeared on BBC Radio 6 performed by The Radiophonic Workshop. Eldritch Press published his first collection of poetry, PseudoPsalms: Prophets (nominated for the Elgin Award), and his second and third poetry collections, PseudoPsalms: Saints v. Sinners and PseudoPsalms: Sodom (nominated for the Elgin Award), were published by Bizarro Pulp Press. In addition, he was the Editor for the first books of poetry released by the Horror Writers Association: Horror Poetry Showcase Volumes I and II.
He founded both National Dark Poetry Day (Oct. 7) and the annual international Horror Poetry Showcase for the Horror Writers Association.
