Once in a Lifetime Opportunity

Once in a Lifetime Opportunity
by Jessica Hardy as told to Lizzie Ashworth
Genre: Memoir
Publication Date: November 4, 2019
In the mid-20th century, an entire generation of women found themselves caught up in a revolution. Young women tossed aside society’s rules that had governed women with an iron hand for hundreds of years. Suddenly women had agency, the right to their own identity. And their own sexual adventures. The story of Jessica Hardy and her seven-year marriage to Parker Grant brings that enormous cultural shift down to the personal level. As she enters college in 1966, Jessica is desperate to break out of her strict upbringing. Parker is her salvation, a graduating senior who becomes the love of her life. Newly married, they immerse in Parker’s duties as an air force officer and a world of their own making—nights in Las Vegas, windy Pacific beaches, and long summer days in the Philippine Islands. Slowly, with Parker’s encouragement, Jessica gains self-confidence and a sense of herself. But Jessica has a problem. She wants more. More knowledge, more experience, autonomy. Leaving no stone unturned, Jess breaks one rule after another—illegal abortion, drugs, one man then another, even time in jail. It’s an unexpected spiritual awakening that opens the door to the rest of her life. Once in a Lifetime Opportunity reveals this tumultuous time in a gut-wrenching portrayal of a woman determined to find her own way and the man who loved her.
Early years of my life raced by with little time for writing as I pursued a technical career, raised children, and made questionable progress in learning to paint. Finally with time to write, I dedicate myself to stories of pleasure as well as the occasional editing project. I enjoy cooking, gardening, and time at the Pacific coast. Sunrise and sunset bring special moods, the twilight between two worlds–fully of creative energy. I love snuggling up with a good book most of all–and a cat or two.

He’s seeking a place to belong. His only tool is philosophical satire… Thomas Gephardt loses no love for his rural Indiana home. Q&A with Author Brent Robins
  • Tell us about the process of turning your book into an audiobook.
    • It was a lot of work. I thought that I was saving money by doing more of the reviewing myself, but it was very time consuming. ACX wouldn’t let me use their platform until my book was listed for pre-order, so I used Voices.com. I looked for someone whose voice matched the mood of the book, and I learned later that our backgrounds had some things in common.
  • Do you believe certain types of writing translate better into audiobook format?
    • Yes–upmarket fiction or lighter fiction is probably better than heavy literary fiction. Possibly heavy literary fiction would work on a hike, but it would be more problematic listening to it while driving in the car. Poetry is better seen, to get a sense of the flow and meter, in my view. Many reference books and cookbooks wouldn’t work well as audiobooks.
  • Was a possible audiobook recording something you were conscious of while writing?
    • No, I didn’t realize that it was common for indie writers to do audiobooks. Some people whom I knew encouraged me to do it; they said they wouldn’t have time to sit down and read my book.
  • Did you give them any pronunciation tips or special insight into the characters?
    • My narrator lived in a few different countries. There were a few words in which I wasn’t comfortable with his pronunciation. I’ve traveled widely though, so for the most part, it wasn’t an issue. I comment much about the characters, though I did ask him to give one of my minor characters a strong New Jersey/New York type accent.
  • Were there any real life inspirations behind your writing?
    • Definitely. My novel is based on my travel experiences. My protagonist feels very alienated from his classmates in college. That wasn’t true for me, but I did feel that way in middle school, so I based it on that experience.
  • How do you manage to avoid burn-out? What do you do to maintain your enthusiasm for writing?
    • So far, writing has been a hobby for me. I rarely write more than a couple times a week. If I were to do it full-time, then this issue would be more relevant. As every writer know, it’s hard to write full-time and be able to pay your bills. Some people pull it off, but it’s not easy to do.
  • Are you an audiobook listener?
    • What about the audiobook format appeals to you? I’m generally more into podcasts. If it’s a full-length book, I prefer to read it. However, when I read Crime and Punishment, I couldn’t finish reading it; it was a very difficult book. I bought the audiobook and listened to the second half.
  • Is there a particular part of this story that you feel is more resonating in the audiobook performance than in the book format?
    • Yes–the narrator does about ten different accents since the book has an international focus. I feel that the international character comes alive more with the various accents.

Almost too easy.

Q&A with Author Chris Muhlenfeld
  • Tell us about the process of turning your book into an audiobook.
    • This was my first published work and my first audiobook, so it was all a bit overwhelming. Fortunately, Price Waldman, my amazing narrator, had the experience and knowledge to make the whole process painless.
  • Do you believe certain types of writing translate better into audiobook format?
    • I prefer fiction to non-fiction when it comes to audiobooks. There’s a tricky balance between giving characters a spoken voice and letting the words tell the story. This is where a talented narrator makes all the difference.
  • Was a possible audiobook recording something you were conscious of while writing?
    • I had hoped to create an audio version, but the idea of an eventual audiobook played no role whatsoever in my writing process.
  • How did you select your narrator?
    • I posted samples on acx.com and solicited auditions. After getting several good ones, I really lucked out with Price. He had the perfect voice for this series.
  • How closely did you work with your narrator before and during the recording process? Did you give them any pronunciation tips or special insight into the characters?
    • There was quite a bit of back-and-forth through email. We were 14 time zones away from one another, so we’ve never spoken on the phone before. I feel like he’s become a friend all the same, and I hope to work with him again on my next project.
  • Were there any real-life inspirations behind your writing?
    • Every time I read the news, I see my fiction creeping into reality. Sometimes, it seems inevitable that we’re going to race toward a scenario a lot like what I’ve written in my book.
  • How do you manage to avoid burn-out? What do you do to maintain your enthusiasm for writing?
    • Burn-out has never been an issue for me when it comes to writing. The most important part of my writing practice is having a routine and a schedule, then sticking to it every day. Hmm. I should probably start taking my own advice and get back at it soon.
  • Are you an audiobook listener? What about the audiobook format appeals to you?
    • Absolutely. I’ve loved Audiobooks since my first: Crime and Punishment on seventeen(!) cassette tapes. George Guidall’s narration of that masterpiece is one of the greatest audiobook productions ever.
  • Is there a particular part of this story that you feel is more resonating in the audiobook performance than in the book format?
    • I think that Price did a fantastic job narrating the action scenes and that these may be more resonant in the audiobook version.
  • If you had the power to time travel, would you use it? If yes, when and where would you go?
    • Ah, hell no! My next series involves a form of time travel. I’d never go anywhere near it if it were possible.

Stella of Akrotiri

Stella of Akrotiri: Diana
An Ancient Greek Tale of Immortals Book 3
by Linda Rae Sande
Genre: Epic Fantasy, Romance
Publisher: Twisted Teacup Publishing
Publication Date: December 25, 2019
Born an orphan, raised as a warrior princess, desired by men. Can an Immortal claim her heart?
The first adopted daughter of Stella and Darius, Diana has been raised as if she were one of the fabled Amazon princesses. Her mornings are spent training with Darius at the agōgē, her skills as a warrior matched only by a few of the Deminon army recruits. Her afternoons are spent with Stella as she learns the art of diplomacy and the importance of service to others.
Never does Diana wonder why her parents are so devoted to one another, or why they seem to speak of the past as if they lived in it.
The curious stares aimed in her direction by the agōgē’s doctor, Antony—even when she’s not in the circle of battle—has Diana on edge. Learning she has a much older adopted brother—one who seems to youthen as he ages—has her questioning her origins.
So the arrival of Augustus of Assyria seems fortuitous. Her father’s oldest friend is welcomed with open arms even as he is followed by a threat to the future of Deminon. With his intimate knowledge of her parents, perhaps he’ll have the answers Diana seeks. Or will the Roman senator’s revelation about her only complicate matters? For his attentions are far more intense than those of Antony—and far more arousing.
Stella of Akrotiri: Deminon
An Ancient Greek Tale of Immortals Book 2
Publication Date: December 25, 2018
Love can last a thousand lifetimes when you’re an Immortal… or so they thought.
What’s become of the Immortal Darius? His wife, Stella, worries about his fate as she rules over their city-state of Deminon, especially when she learns he’s been the victim of treachery. She’ll do anything to get him back.
Enslaved as a traitor to Rome, Darius is forced to fight gladiators as part of the funeral rites of powerful Romans. His years of experience on the battlefield serve him well in the arena—until he’s forced to fight Marcus—a younger, stronger gladiator who is unaware of his own immortality.
Sure he’s about to suffer a defeat by the hand of Marcus, Darius is forced to make a decision that will change his future and Stella’s—preserve his essence by allowing his body to die so that he can live on in Marcus. His two-thousand years of memories and life experiences should be powerful enough to overcome the essence of the untested Immortal. Allow him to return to Stella and resume their life together, even if she won’t immediately recognize him.
But Marcus isn’t giving up so easily. Especially when he meets Stella.
Will Marcus help Darius take revenge on the one whose deceit led to his arrest on charges of treason? Or will Darius’ essence slowly be subsumed, the memories of his nearly two-thousand-year lifespan—and of Stella—fading away in the mind of Marcus?
These Immortals once had all the time in the world. Now it’s suddenly of the essence.
Stella of Akrotiri: Origins
An Ancient Greek Tale of Immortals Book 1
Publication Date: June 28, 2019
Immortality can be a lonely existence, especially when the world is about to implode.
For over six hundred years, Darius of Agremon has fought wars on behalf of those who needed his skills in combat. As a lechagos on Strongili, he spends his days commanding the Minoan coastguardsmen against pirates and marauders. His nights are spent alone, for despite having had wives in the past, he has watched them all grow old and die, childless, as he continues to live.
So when he senses immortality in an olive farmer’s young daughter, Darius bargains to take her to wife when she is old enough to marry.
A foundling, Stella works in her adoptive father’s orchard above Akrotiri, climbing the ancient trees to prune and to harvest the strings of pearls from their branches. She fears invaders when she watches flaming arrows arc in the sky, a sign the island is under attack. She worries about how the ground quakes beneath her feet and steam erupts from cracks in the ground. She wonders at the odd tingling she experiences whenever Darius of Agremon is near, a sensation not unlike the one she feels when spending time in the oldest trees.
Unaware of the arrangement her father has made with the lechagos, Stella thinks she has been sold into slavery when Darius comes for her. Her youth has been spent admiring the man who helped her father’s business thrive. Now she has only contempt for him and his hard-headed manner, despite the pleasures he incites whenever he claims her body.
While the earth trembles and a volcano threatens to destroy the island of Strongili, these two will have to forge a relationship that will last far longer than a lifetime—one that must endure an eternity and the disaster that’s about to wipe out the only home Stella has ever known.
A self-described nerd and lover of science, Linda Rae spent many years as a published technical writer specializing in 3D graphics workstations, software and 3D animation (her movie credits include SHREK and SHREK 2). An interest in genealogy led to years of research on the Regency era and a desire to write fiction based in that time.
A fan of action-adventure movies, she can frequently be found at the local cinema. Although she no longer has any fish, she follows the San Jose Sharks. She is a member of Novelists, Inc. (NINC) and makes her home in Cody, Wyoming.

The Otto Digmore Series

The Otto Digmore Difference
The Otto Digmore Series Book 1
by Brent Hartinger
Genre: New Adult Humorous M/M Romance
“Road trip!”
Otto Digmore is a 26-year-old gay guy with dreams of being a successful actor, and he’s finally getting some attention as a result of his supporting role on a struggling sitcom. But he’s also a burn survivor with scars on half his face, and all indications are that he’s just too different to ever find real Hollywood success.
Now he’s up for an amazing new role that could change everything. Problem is, he and his best friend Russel Middlebrook have to drive all the way across the country in order to get to the audition on time.
It’s hard to say which is worse: the fact that so many things go wrong, or that Russel, an aspiring screenwriter, keeps comparing their experiences to some kind of road trip movie.
There’s also the fact that Otto and Russel were once boyfriends, and Otto is starting to realize that he might still have romantic feelings for his best friend.
Just how far will Otto go to get the role, and maybe the guy, of his dreams?
Author Brent Hartinger first introduced the character of Otto Digmore in 2005, in his Lambda Award-winning books about Russel Middlebrook. Back then, Otto was something pretty unusual for YA literature: a disabled gay character.
Now, more than a decade later, Otto is grown up and finally stepping into the spotlight on his own. The Otto Digmore Difference, the first book in a new stand-alone series for adults, is about much more than the challenges of being “different.” It’s also about the unexpected nature of all of life’s journeys, and the heavy price that must be paid for Hollywood fame.
But more than anything, it’s a different kind of love story, about the frustrating and fantastic power of the love between two friends.
The Otto Digmore Decision
The Otto Digmore Series Book 2
“If we get caught, they’ll throw us in jail. On the other hand, we’ll have been involved in one of the craziest Hollywood stories I’ve ever heard, and maybe someone will want to turn *that* into a movie!”
Otto Digmore is back, still trying to make it as an actor in Hollywood (despite his facial scars), but frustrated by all the schemers who’ll stab you in the back to get ahead. But then Otto’s good friend Russel Middlebrook sells a screenplay, a heist movie set in the Middle Ages — and Otto has been cast in an important supporting role! For twelve weeks, Otto and Russel will be on location together in England and Malta.
Problem is, once production is underway, it quickly becomes clear that the director is ruining Russel’s script. If the movie ends up being the bomb that both Otto and Russel expect it to be, it could destroy both their Hollywood careers forever.
But Otto and Russel aren’t willing to take that chance. Together, they hatch a crazy plan to make a good movie behind the director’s back! But how far are they willing to go to save their careers? Are they willing to become exactly the kind of scheming backstabbers they always said they hated?
The Otto Digmore Decision is partly a caper story, partly a humorous Hollywood satire. It’s also an inside look at the struggles of anyone “different,” and it’s even something of a love story, except it’s one between two friends.
More than anything, The Otto Digmore Decision proves the old adage about creative pursuits: the most interesting drama always happens behind the scenes!
I am Brent Hartinger, a novelist and screenwriter. I’ve published fourteen novels, had nine screenplays optioned, and had two of my projects turned into feature films.
My first novel, GEOGRAPHY CLUB (2003), is the story of a gay teen named Russel Middlebrook. It was one of the first in a new wave of break-out LGBTQ young adult fiction, and it was adapted as a feature film in 2013. I subsequently wrote three more books about Russel, calling them The Russel Middlebrook Series. I tried to give these books a lot of humor and heart.
In 2013, I continued Russel’s story as he grew up, into his twenties, in a new, stand-alone series called Russel Middlebook: The Futon Years. These books are “new adult” (making Russel one of very few literary characters to “jump” genres in projects created by the same author).
In 2017, I released a new, stand-alone series starring Russel’s gay disabled friend Otto Digmore, called The Otto Digmore Series.
I love mysteries and thrillers. My 2016 gay teen puzzle box thriller THREE TRUTHS AND A LIE was nominated for an Edgar Award (this, and my 2005 novel GRAND & HUMBLE, are real mind-benders, trust me). My 2007 YA mystery, PROJECT PAY DAY, is much lighter, and has also been adapted as feature film (which I wrote), to be released in 2020.

I also love to travel. In fact, I no longer have a home. Instead, I travel the world indefinitely with my husband, writer Michael Jensen, moving to a new country every few months. You can follow our “digital nomad” journey at BrentandMichaelAreGoingPlaces.com
I try hard to write books that are page-turners, and movies that are fast-paced and accessible. If I had to describe my own writing projects, I would say, “Strong central concept, strong plot, strong character and voice.”
Basically, I see myself as a storyteller. But I think “story” is a lot more than “beautiful language” or complicated camera angles, which I often find self-indulgent and distracting. In most cases, I think the important thing for a writer or filmmaker is to get out of the way and just tell the damn story.
