Audiobook Series Tour: Expeditionary Force by Craig Alanson
INDEPENDENT ‘AUDIO-FIRST’ ENTERTAINMENT STUDIO RELEASES FIRST-EVER TRAILER FOR AUDIBLE’S #1 SCI-FI AUDIOBOOK SERIES: EXPEDITIONARY FORCE BY CRAIG ALANSON

Author: Craig Alanson

Narrator: R.C. Bray

Length: 16 hours 23 minutes

Series: Expeditionary Force, Book 1

Publisher: Podium Publishing

Released: Dec. 13, 2016

Genre: Science Fiction

From multimillion dollar, best-selling author Craig Alanson (and narrated by fan-favorite R.C. Bray) Expeditionary Force is a New York Times best-selling military science-fiction series that will be composed of 14 novels. The first audiobook in the series, Columbus Day, was one of five finalists for the prestigious Audie Award in 2018 and has been optioned for film and television by Milmar Pictures (AIR FORCE ONE, CASTLE, HOLLOW MAN). Zachary Quinto (STAR TREK, NOS482, HEROES) and Kate Mulgrew (ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK, STAR TREK: VOYAGER) starred in the epic Expeditionary Force audio drama HOMEFRONT; Armageddon, Book 8, debuted at #1 on all of Audible. Books 1-9 are available now on Audible.

Nominee, 2018 Audie Awards — Audiobook of the Year We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn’t win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the Native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon came ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There went the good old days, when humans got killed only by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved. The UN Expeditionary Force hitched a ride on Kristang ships to fight the Ruhar wherever our new allies thought we could be useful. So, I went from fighting with the US Army in Nigeria to fighting in space. It was lies, all of it. We shouldn’t even be fighting the Ruhar; they aren’t our enemy. Our allies are. I’d better start at the beginning.

Podium Audio is thrilled to announce the debut of the studio’s first audiobook trailer to mark the release of Valkyrie, the highly-anticipated ninth installment of New York Times best-selling author Craig Alanson’s Expeditionary Force sci-fi audiobook series. Voiced by R.C. Bray and edited by leading advertising agency Jump/Cut (trailers for PARASITE, FIRST REFORMED, CAPTAIN FANTASTIC), the audiobook trailer is Podium’s first foray into the audiovisual realm.

From an early age Audie, Earphones, and SOVAS Voice Arts Award-winning audiobook narrator R.C. Bray despised reading. Truly hated it with a passion. And audiobooks? Even worse. Those were for people too lazy to read (not to be confused with those like himself who didn’t want to read to begin with). R.C. eventually got older and wiser (he was always good-looking) and eschewing his capricious convictions fell head-over-heels with reading. Not just to learn words like “eschew” and “capricious” so he could use them in a bio line, but because someone was actually going to give him money to do it. Note: R.C.’s gorgeous wife and three beautiful children begged him not to make this his official bio. Clearly he misunderstood.

Q&A with Author Craig Alanson: Part I
  • Tell us about the process of turning your book into an audiobook.
    • I send the manuscript to Podium, they give it to Bob. Magic happens
  • Do you believe certain types of writing translate better into audiobook format?
    • Dictionaries make for terrible audio. Also any “classic” you were forced to read in school like Beowulf would be a terrible audiobook, because it is a long, boring way for teachers to torture students. Although if RC Bray narrated a dictionary, I would at least listen to a sample.
  • Was a possible audiobook recording something you were conscious of while writing?
    • For the first three books, no. Back then, I did not expect anyone would read my books, so I thought there was no point creating audio versions.
  • How did you select your narrator?
    • Podium selected RC Bray and Tim Gerard Reynolds and MacLeod Andrews, and each of them were perfect for the books they narrated.
  • How closely did you work with your narrator before and during the recording process? Did you give them any pronunciation tips or special insight into the characters?
    • Pronunciation tips yes, and in a few cases I did send notes about a character’s accent, background etc. if it was not already clear from the text. Other than that, let the pros do their jobs. I did not give RC Bray notes about how I imagined Skippy’s voice, so Bob created it by himself. The voice is exactly as I imagined!
  • Were there any real life inspirations behind your writing?
    • I have never been a wizard, a soldier, traveled on a spaceship or talked with a beer can, so, no. Ok, maybe I have talked to a beer can but that is another story.
  • How do you manage to avoid burn-out? What do you do to maintain your enthusiasm for writing?
    • My long-suffering wife knows that when I am 2/3rds of the way through writing a book, I am annoyed with it. But that is mostly because I am excited about writing the next book, and the current book is in the way. I maintain enthusiasm for writing, by only writing books that excite me.
  • Are you an audiobook listener? What about the audiobook format appeals to you?
    • I listen to audiobooks when I’m running, at the gym, driving, etc. They are convenient because they are on my phone or my watch so I never have to remember where I put my book or Kindle. Also, a good narrator brings a story to life in a way that doesn’t happen when I am reading words on a page.
  • Is there a particular part of this story that you feel is more resonating in the audiobook performance than in the book format?
    • My writing style is heavy on dialog, light on description. That makes the story move faster. One issue is that the rapid-fire back-and-forth dialog in my books can be difficult for narrators because they have to constantly switch between voices, so I am terribly sorry that I am not sorry at all about that.
  • If you had the power to time travel, would you use it? If yes, when and where would you go?
    • This question is awkward because I already did. All I can say is, I would never have predicted a Cleveland Browns football dynasty.

Q&A with Author Chris Muhlenfeld
  • Tell us about the process of turning your book into an audiobook.
    • This was my first published work and my first audiobook, so it was all a bit overwhelming. Fortunately, Price Waldman, my amazing narrator, had the experience and knowledge to make the whole process painless.
  • Do you believe certain types of writing translate better into audiobook format?
    • I prefer fiction to non-fiction when it comes to audiobooks. There’s a tricky balance between giving characters a spoken voice and letting the words tell the story. This is where a talented narrator makes all the difference.
  • Was a possible audiobook recording something you were conscious of while writing?
    • I had hoped to create an audio version, but the idea of an eventual audiobook played no role whatsoever in my writing process.
  • How did you select your narrator?
    • I posted samples on acx.com and solicited auditions. After getting several good ones, I really lucked out with Price. He had the perfect voice for this series.
  • How closely did you work with your narrator before and during the recording process? Did you give them any pronunciation tips or special insight into the characters?
    • There was quite a bit of back-and-forth through email. We were 14 time zones away from one another, so we’ve never spoken on the phone before. I feel like he’s become a friend all the same, and I hope to work with him again on my next project.
  • Were there any real-life inspirations behind your writing?
    • Every time I read the news, I see my fiction creeping into reality. Sometimes, it seems inevitable that we’re going to race toward a scenario a lot like what I’ve written in my book.
  • How do you manage to avoid burn-out? What do you do to maintain your enthusiasm for writing?
    • Burn-out has never been an issue for me when it comes to writing. The most important part of my writing practice is having a routine and a schedule, then sticking to it every day. Hmm. I should probably start taking my own advice and get back at it soon.
  • Are you an audiobook listener? What about the audiobook format appeals to you?
    • Absolutely. I’ve loved Audiobooks since my first: Crime and Punishment on seventeen(!) cassette tapes. George Guidall’s narration of that masterpiece is one of the greatest audiobook productions ever.
  • Is there a particular part of this story that you feel is more resonating in the audiobook performance than in the book format?
    • I think that Price did a fantastic job narrating the action scenes and that these may be more resonant in the audiobook version.
  • If you had the power to time travel, would you use it? If yes, when and where would you go?
    • Ah, hell no! My next series involves a form of time travel. I’d never go anywhere near it if it were possible.

Q&A with Author Jason Bonet
  • Tell us about the process of turning your book into an audiobook.
    • This was a brutal process made more difficult because I really didn’t want to read Drayden’s chapters. I have more confidence in narrating than I do acting, and felt it was best left to a trained actor to read the male parts, but alas, I couldn’t because it was costly to hire two different actors for both parts, and the way Audible structures its ‘Producing’ segment makes it challenging to orchestrate the recordings from two separate ‘narrators.’ I listened to a ton of samples on Audible before settling on Kim Bretton to read Natalie’s chapters. As soon as I heard Kim, I knew she would make the book amazing. I just love how she read Natalie and Agent Love. Love it! As soon as I accepted the fact that I would have to read Drayden — despite my internal self-doubt battles — I dove into excruciating internet research to learn the process. I bought one of those Blue Yeti microphones, which came with Studio One 3 audio software, set up a tiny little recording studio in a spare closet, and got to recording. The process was sloooow. I crammed the recording into 3 very long days. Seriously, it was one of the more challenging things I’ve ever done, but I’m so happy I did it. The experience gave me a lot of confidence, and I plan on recording my other two books (which do not have a British female character).
  • Do you believe certain types of writing translate better into audiobook format?
    • No, I think it really comes down to good story matched with a good reader. And when I say story, that also connects to a good non-fiction book well-structured and well-read.
  • Was a possible audiobook recording something you were conscious of while writing?
    • No, not at all for this book. But it is now an absolute part of my plan for previous books and anything I write in the future. I’m really looking forward to my next recording.
  • How did you select your narrator?
    • Kim read a dramatic sequence I sent to her and nailed it. Her voice portrayed softness, elegance, drama, fright and anger, all in a short snippet of time. She’s amazing.
  • How closely did you work with your narrator before and during the recording process? Did you give them any pronunciation tips or special insight into the characters?
    • Very minor instruction because I didn’t want to get in the way of Kim’s acting. She was a pro who demonstrated very obviously that she cared about the project and the characters as much as I did.
  • Were there any real life inspirations behind your writing?
    • No, not this book. I’ve got another that is pulled from a real life event (book is called One Missed Kiss and it’s coming to audiobook before the new year).
  • How do you manage to avoid burn-out? What do you do to maintain your enthusiasm for writing?
    • I just love writing so much. The daily battle for me is not burn-out, it’s that I thin myself out with to many ideas and projects. For instance, I am knee-deep in the sequel but got distracted with a movie idea that I just HAD TO write. Dumb. One project at a time, Jason. Focus, Jason.
  • Are you an audiobook listener? What about the audiobook format appeals to you?
    • I love audiobooks. They transport me just the same way reading does. The first audiobook I ever listened to was like 30 years ago on a trip to college when I listened to the unabridged version of The Count of Monte Cristo on something like 20 different audio tapes. After that, I was hooked. Now it’s all on Audible, which I think is a wonderful app.
  • Is there a particular part of this story that you feel is more resonating in the audiobook performance than in the book format?
    • I think my narrator brought the character of Agent Love to life in a superior way than she is written. She acted her so well, it made me love that character more than I already did.
  • What bits of advice would you give to aspiring authors?
    • Write in bed. Write in your car. Writer everywhere. Write in short stints because those short stints add up more quickly than you think. You don’t have to write every day, but you do have to put effort into your thoughts toward your book every day. Back to the writing in bed thing, do this because your mind will work out the kinks that you can’t solve during the day. Your subconscious mind will fix everything you broke during the day.
  • Do you have any tips for authors going through the process of turning their books into audiobooks?
    • Hire a pro. If you can’t afford to hire a pro and think you can do it yourself, do it yourself.
  • What’s next for you?
    • Save The Seven! No more distractions. No more working on other projects before finishing it. It’s really good so far. Action packed and the characters are doing surprising things. Loving it.

In 1981, he became an emergency services personnel and eventually completed his employment of twenty five years as a fire captain and emergency medial tech. He is now retired and has completed the first book of his novel he developed those many years ago when he attended OSU.
