Marlayna James

Tell us about yourself.

I’m a video game junkie from Canada. WoW, CoD, and Witcher are a few of my favourites. I love Downunder TV shows. My addiction is Offspring—I highly recommend it if you like character depth. I enjoy gardening, preserving, survival camping, and music.

When did you know you wanted to be an author?

When I was 6 or 7 years old. I glued a bunch of paper together into a booklet and wrote a book talking vegetables in a supermarket.

What genres do you like to read?  Are these the same genres you write in?

Give me Romance—it’s my favourite. I think every book I write has romantic elements but Annora writes erotica, Aaryanna writes fantasy, Achelle writes women’s fiction, and I write romance. I bridge all my pen names with Marlayna James listed as a co-author on every book.

Is your book for adults, young adults or children?

Very adult—Dark Fantasy. I think it will appeal to women most, but I believe if given the opportunity men wold also enjoy it.

What is your current release or project?

A Crown Forged By Victory’s Consequence is Book I of The Blackened Tablet Series. It is a Dark Fantasy with a stand-alone quest arch as well as a series quest arch. It includes coarse language, explicitly detailed romances, violence, and too many trigger warnings to list. This story came to me when I was 12 or 13 years old and it is only now that I am putting it to paper.

Tell us about the key characters

The key characters—that’s a doozy of a question. The cast in this series is huge—think Game of Thrones or Harry Potter.

Crowned Prince Aedyn of Aldersward is our main character. Looks like Ian Somerhalder. He wants readers to know what the downfalls are of being royalty. Because in truth, there are many more downsides than advantages.

Lead Auren of Maidstone is Aedyn’s best friend. He resembles Stephen Amell. He’s a sucker for women. A real ladies man who knows he’s sexy, and is in a constant state of lust. This often gets him into trouble, and his situations can be quite comical.

Guard Asa of Lessard is friends with Auren and Aedyn. I don’t have a lookalike comparison. He reminds me of Bashful of the seven dwarfs. He’s youthful looking and wears his heart on his sleeve. He embarrasses easily and when he is the colour rises in his face and his ears turn red. He can be a prankster and quiet goofy when he isn’t facing impending doom.

Emissary Bennet of Baitsloam is the three young friends’ mentor. He looks like William Hurt in Robin Hood. At nearly 800 years old, he is the last surviving member of his race. A trusted advisor to the royal family for generations. He lost his family when the kingdoms on the world of Speranza broke off and sunk into the murky sea. He never loved again and journeys with our three other characters to find out whether his kingdom survived—his wife, his children. He’s my “Bob”—a term used for a character who is present to explain things to the reader.

What is your blurb or synopsis of the book?

The Blackened Tablet Series is an epic fantasy quest story with corrupt politics, wondrous magic, and illicit encounters in a supernatural world where no one is safe.

Three hundred years ago, the sacred tablet granted by their god, Jezabet, turned black, and eight kingdoms broke free, plummeting into the bottomless sea. There was no warning, and no one knows why.

Now, a strange illness plagues Aldersward. Crowned Prince Aedyn’s sisters, Achelle and Annora, his father, and countrymen are desperate and grief-stricken. All hope is lost…

Until someone dreams, and Aedyn leaves behind his mistress and his betrothed to cure their nation. He enlists his friends; a brazen playboy, a gentle strongman, and an ancient mentor. Together, they set out on a perilous journey—few believe they will survive.

This isn’t a fairy tale—sex becomes currency, murder is ordinary, and love doesn’t conquer all.

Everyone loves a hero—good triumphs evil. But few dare to question how victory ripples into consequences. Explore this exciting concept in the Blackened Tablet Series.

Day 149
Princess Achelle’s Bedchamber
Royal Estate
Coaldale Village, Aldersward

Achelle’s hand shook as she flattened several stray hairs in the mirror. She wore her favourite dark purple gown laced with intricate white beading. Once a tight, perfect fit, now hung loose from her pale, washed-out frame. She looked sickly.

Her sunken green eyes found Astrid studying the gown. “I cannot attend my father and his men.”

The summoning bell clanged outside, signalling the evening meal at an hour’s end.

“Princess Achelle, the king ordered it.”

She knew. He had visited at dawn and demanded her company. Attempting to diminish the tonic’s effects, her maid kept her mind clear of substances and fed her dried bread and tea throughout the day.

“Your Highness, I’ll sew the sides together at your back. No one will be the wiser.” Astrid crossed to the wardrobe and removed the sewing box.

Achelle turned sideways. Perhaps she would go unnoticed.

This cannot be over soon enough. Achelle settled her hands in her lap. She was weak, and her hands trembled each time she used her utensils or lifted her mug. She received scrutinising looks from her father’s physician, seated opposite her.

Finally, the king invited everyone to the study. When he left without stopping to escort her, she was grateful. She could escape.

As those present left, she lingered, feigning a fascination in a painting across the room. She sought to shift her chair back, but when she stood, weakness struck her limbs, forcing her to brace her palms against the table.

A gentle grip steadied her, and she turned. Physician Axton stood at her side, offering his guidance. She could not refuse and accepted, averting her face from him.

“Princess Achelle,” he wrapped her arm in his and slowly guided her.

The other guests had already disappeared. The hall was empty.

“I know your father appreciated your update from Auren. Though, I wonder if you could quell my curiosity. How many days’ rations are available before they must return?”

Her eyes stared ahead. “Seven.” The lie came easily.

He checked their steps, turning to her. “Your Highness, is this what Auren told you?”

Indignation brought her eyes to his. “Of course. Why would I state it otherwise?”

“Princess, forgive me. I understood when you delivered Auren’s reports to your father, they were verbatim. I didn’t realise you withheld parts.”

He suspected the truth, and defensively, she answered. “I didn’t realise you had a right to question me.” She pulled her arm free and turned to climb the stairs.

“Your Highness, you’re correct,” he caught her arm and said to the back of her head. “However, I wonder how your father would respond if I informed him you’re lying about your dream-walks? And you’ve left our men without guidance to fend for themselves and perhaps die? The tonic you’re taking is dangerous. If others haven’t noticed yet, they soon will. Your weight loss, colouring, and the hollowing of your cheeks are very apparent. I fear your father’s too worried about his sons to even imagine something is wrong with you.”

She turned her cold eyes on him. “The tonic you gave Astrid ran out, and I haven’t received more from you. There’s no danger. You can free your conscience.”

He nodded. “Princess, perhaps then shortly, you can clear yours.”

As a maid stepped into the hall, he left her standing alone beside the stairs

Do you have a favourite scene?

Any of the scenes between Emissary Sahana of Larkburgh and Guard Asa of Lessard are my favourite. The pair are absolutely adorable together—and their arguments/misunderstandings are beyond comical.

What advice would you give a beginner?

I think the most valuable advice I can give someone is; don’t give up. I did. I stopped writing several times before I decided to make this a career, and looking back I wish I hadn’t. The best piece of advice I have ever received was from an image. I don’t know who wrote it, or where it came from, but it said, “You can’t edit a blank page.” I know it isn’t profound, but it’s true. Just write. Don’t think about editing, spelling mistakes, holes in your story. Write it to completion, then when it’s done, go back and worry about those things.

Bio

I’m just Marlayna.

Private. Loner. Writer. I don’t want fame. I want you to feel something.

I use pen names. Several: Aaryanna Abbott, Annora Adams, and Achelle Ashby.

About me…

I sing really well. With music, I’m not picky. I can appreciate all genres—belting them out at the top of my lungs as I drive through town.

I love downunder TV shows. The longer the series, the better. Offspring. A Place to Call Home. McLeod’s Daughters. A warning: they will tear your heart out.

I’m a Buffy fanatic. Watch the series every year from start to finish. I can tell you which episode by only hearing a single line.

I’m the coolest mom—still playing video games, smack talking with the young’uns through my headset. CoD and Witcher are my favourites. Beware, my language can get quite colourful.

I love to read and have an extensive library in my basement—there’s no room for it elsewhere. They are unapologetically smutty romances. Don’t like—don’t look.

I enjoy thrift shopping—especially books. I mean, hours and hours to find a single book. That’s my idea of an incredible day.

Little bits: veggies over candy, vacuums over jewellery, and water over any beverage.

Pierce Me: A Conspiracy of Ravens Book One

by Shelby Lee

I lost the three most important things to me within the span of a month.

My best friend.

My mom.

My voice.

The world became bleak and my stint in the hospital brought none of them back. Months later, I showed up at college and learned that I could save two of them. Unfortunately, I can’t raise people from the dead, and in order to save my relationship with my childhood best friend, I have to accept what I’d done to destroy us.

I’ll serve whatever sentence he deems necessary for my transgressions, help him and his friends confront enemies known and unknown, and learn how to use this new version of my voice.

After all, my silence is now the loudest sound in the universe.

Pierce Me is a new adult dark romantic suspense novel featuring an enemies to lovers and why choose relationship dynamic. It is intended for a mature audience ages 18+. It centers around a young woman who has lost her voice to traumatic mutism as she goes up against her old childhood lover, as well as enemies both known and unknown to her. It does end in a cliffhanger, and is book one of a planned four book series. For more in depth content information, please visit the author’s website.

Bio

Author, Tarot Reader and professional ballroom dancer. Often found in the local woods and moors with dog and husband, or in a creative daze at her computer, or reading a book. Occasionally, I also teach people how to dance!

Tell us about yourself

I’m a professional ballroom dancer by trade, and author and tarot reader by choice. I live in a semirural village in West Yorkshire, England with my long-suffering husband, Jim, two rescue cats and my fabulous dog, Bingo.

When did you know you wanted to be an author?

In my head, I’ve been an author all my life. Books fascinated me from a very early age. Even the old-fashioned ones, with the dark green and red binding and faded gold lettering. My mother used to catch me staring at her bookshelves and say, “You can have them when you learn to read.” So that’s what I did and never stopped. I’ve always got a book on the go.

What genres do you like to read?  Are these the same genres you write in?

I’m an eclectic reader. Basically, I will read anything. Even the ingredients on the back of a can of baked beans, if that’s all that is available. As a teenager, I loved historical romance. All those tales of adventures on the high seas, in lush tropical paradises. These days, I enjoy fantasy of all kinds, anything with an element of adventure, with well-drawn characters and a good plot. I adore Harry Potter. Potterhead! (I’m a Gryffindor, by the way!)

Is your book for adults, young adults or children?

Queen of Swords is a standalone new adult/adult fantasy fiction. However, forthcoming books may straddle several age ranges, depending on the adventures of the protagonist. In this first book, Petronella of the Falcons is twenty-six, and struggling with her inability to provide a desperately needed heir to her kingdom. The next full-length book will be Page of Swords, and the protagonist, Dominic Skinner, is only about 15, so his is a coming-of-age fantasy adventure based in the same world.

What is your current release or project?

Queen of Swords is available on Amazon now. I’m currently writing a prequel novella to her story – The Seer of Epera, which will be on Amazon permanently free as an introduction into the Tales from the Tarot series. Page of Swords is in plotting stage, but Dominic had to duke it out with Domita Lombard, who is the protagonist in the next book, Knight of Wands.

Tell us about the key characters

The key characters in Queen of Swords are Petronella of the Falcons, reluctant and failed queen and wife to Arion, King of Swords. Other major characters are Domita Lombard, a rambunctious and fiery red head from the desert land of Battonia, Felice de Winter, her long time nurse and friend from earthy Argentia, and young Alice of Oceanis. Lord Joran of Weir provides the love interest, and I’m afraid I can’t tell you about the baddie, because #spoiler!

What is your blurb or synopsis of the book?

Lost magic, hidden enemies and a doomed land.

A failed queen, fatefully bound to a dying kingdom.

Dutiful, bookish Petronella is not the powerful queen her country needs. Unknowingly bound to the land by ancient, forbidden magic, Petronella’s only task is to provide an heir to the throne of Epera.

Ten years into her reign, she has failed. Her land is dying; the people are starving, and her pain maddened husband, Arion, is out of time, patience and options. The cost of Petronella’s failure will be her life.

Pursued by her enemies, Petronella’s search for answers leads her far away from her kingdom to Oceanis, a land of powerful magic, and enormous temptation.

But, with the future of her kingdom in the balance, a new power is rising to take advantage of their weakness. A secret and vengeful enemy who will stop at nothing to reshape Epera in his image and end the line of the Eagles forever.

What Petronella learns in Oceanis will challenge everything she thought was true and lead her to a tragic confrontation with a deadly adversary for the heart, soul and survival of her beloved Epera.

Share an excerpt

Petronella awoke with a jerk as the mid-morning sunlight warmed her pillow. She stretched a crick in her neck and rubbed her eyes. A pleasant lassitude lingered that made her long to stretch and go back to sleep, preferably with Joran’s arms around her. Her cheeks warmed and her body tingled as her mind roamed through the events of the night before.

It had been… wonderful.

One servant must have already braved their hangover to prepare a bath for her. The tub steamed, inviting her presence, and she crossed the room naked to slide into the silken water, reaching for the soap. Birds sang in the olive trees outside her window and laughing voices chattered in the courtyard. She ducked her head under the water, blotting them out, and then surfaced, blowing bubbles. The curtains at her window billowed. She blinked. She was not alone.

The stranger stood at the entrance to the balcony. Clothed in stark black, his sudden presence against the crisp white of her curtains was like staring into the dark mouth of an empty grave. Thick set. Tall. Long, tangled blond hair. A raw scar disfigured his face. It ran from the corner of his right eye and carved a ragged, oozing path across his tattooed cheekbone to the corner of his mouth. Her eyes flashed to the sword at his side, the knife in his fist. Her memory offered the vision of a dark night on a crowded bridge, dangerous water sliding past her terrified eyes, and the desperate, random swing of her blade.

She gasped, sliding backwards in the bath and scrabbled for a weapon. Her hand found her bar of soap, but there was nothing else there to aid her. Her dagger was still in its scabbard under the bed where she had kicked it days ago. She cursed herself for not being more wary. The man waited. He appeared to enjoy watching her panic. His eyes held the deadly certainty of a striking hawk.

“Who are you?” she ground out, still scanning the room for something to aid her.

The man gave her a painful, lopsided smile that didn’t meet his eyes.

“I am here to collect your ring,” he said, taking a step forward into the room. He raised his knife.

Her diamond pulsed once on her finger and her panic left her. Cat-like, he glided towards her. Each footfall brought him closer, and her gaze locked on his dusty boots. She seemed to have all the time she required to bring her arm up and toss the wet soap with unerring accuracy into the path of his next step. She was out of the tub and sprinting for her dagger before his thick body thudded to the floor.

Grabbing the scabbard, she whirled, knife in hand, as he regained his feet, face twisting in rage. She didn’t wait for him to close in. Eyes narrowed, she fired the blade at him with all the force she could muster. It pierced his left eye, and he gave a shriek of shock and fear before his body collapsed underneath him.

She sank to the bed, her hands reaching for a robe. Fastening it around her body, she crossed to the corpse. His blank, one eyed gaze stared up at her. Her knife protruded from his skull. She swallowed against a wave of nausea as time snapped back to normal speed.

“Joran.”

She had a fleeting mental image of him snatching up his sword, and then his feet pounded down the corridor outside her room and the door slammed open. He stumbled to a shocked halt at the sight of the body and turned to her, face ashen. His hair was standing on end, a mess of tangled honey, his jaw stubbled. He scraped his hands through his hair.

“I don’t believe it.”

“Do you know who this is?”

“He is… was… a paid assassin. His name is Bastien. He is notorious. Never misses a kill. How did you manage it? You should be dead by now.”

“I was in the bath. He surprised me, and I thought he had me and then… something happened. My ring pulsed and… it was like time slowed down.”

Joran’s eyebrows raised to his hairline. “Or perhaps you sped up?”

She shrugged. “Whatever happened, he’s here, which means I was right. Your borders are not safe.”

“Unless he was here before they closed.”

“Someone tried to kill me on the bridge at Goldfern. I stabbed him, remember? If this is him, the borders were already closed.” She swallowed and reached for a day gown. “We must tell Merlon. I knew I was right to be worried. Arion’s forces have found another way in.”

Do you have a favorite scene?

My personal favourite scene is the climax at the end of the book – but again spoiler alert.

What advice would you give a beginner?

Not sure in what context – but my best advice to anyone wanting to do anything is – Start. Learn. Practice. Get obsessed. Get determined. Fall in love with your dreams. They are so easy to tear, but also easy to repair! Finally, if in doubt, do the thing that makes your heart sing.

Queen of Swords

Christine Cazaly

“It’s our choices that make us what we are.” Mistress Eglion, Seer of Epera.

In Epera, one does not speak of the old gods on pain of death, and officially, magic does not exist. It has become a nation famed for its scholars and its manufactured goods. But the kingdom is on its knees. Crippled by flood and famine, unable to feed its people and at war with its neighbours. Arion, its fearful and pain-wracked king, believes himself cursed by dark magic and blames his queen for her inability to bear an heir to the throne.

Petronella, Queen of Epera, wants nothing more than to do her duty, but after ten years of trying every available remedy, she has run out of ideas. When she learns the price of failure is her life, there is only one possible, unthinkable option left – escape to seek help in the forbidden, magical land of Oceanis – the kingdom upon which her husband has recently declared war.

But the road to beguiling and seductive Oceanis holds many challenges for the bookish and guilt-ridden queen, and Petronella begins to realise that her life up to now was never all it seemed. As the two nations clash, Petronella uncovers the edges of an old and deadly secret, and will soon face a tragic choice that will either save her beloved kingdom, or damn it forever.

Sacrificed to the Sea Monster

Ava M Taylor (i.e. me)

The ocean is deep and dangerous.

No one knows this better than Vanessa. Her father died while working at sea. Her mother faded away. Now Vanessa’s alone and old enough to be sacrificed.

Five sea monster block the entrance to her village’s fishing bay. This means five women will be sacrificed to the sea monsters in the hope the village will be able to go fishing this year. Vanessa knows she’ll be one of them.

She chooses the ocean over the village. She takes a leap of faith. But the ocean is deep and dangerous. Will Vanessa save her village at the cost of her life? Or is this just the beginning of her fated journey?

Excerpt

She turned from the ocean and made her way back down the rocks. Uncertain of her mood, he stood his ground. She picked her way across the rocks and sand. He wanted her. He wanted to lay her on the white sand and take her in every way he had already and then start taking her in new ways.

Her head snapped up and her eyes speared him. Still angry

“Jerk,” she strode up to him. “You. You give me a choice and I think… I think you’re different. You make love to me. You tell me you want to protect me. Then because I see something which makes me think, you’ve suddenly got me off in some damn city. Why?”

“I wondered if you had dreams before you were sacrificed,” Beric said. “I wondered if you wanted a chance at something different.”

“Dreams. The only dreams I remember ever… no.” Vanessa paced away from him. Shaking her head, she turned back. “I told you about my parents. I told you what my mother called me. You think somehow I’d be happy living in a concrete barren city?”

“The ocean is a harsh environment,” Beric said.

“I know,” Vanessa said. “I’ve lived on the edge of it my entire life.”

“That’s my point. I wondered if you wanted to pursue something other than being by the ocean.”

“You’re an idiot,” she put her hands on her hips. For a moment, she wondered how ridiculous she looked standing completely naked on a miniscule beach having a fight with her sea monster boyfriend. The ridiculousness of it made her lips twitch.

“Probably,” Beric admitted. “Look at you. You aren’t a water baby. You’re a goddess. I love you and because I love you, I wondered if being here with me was the best thing for you.”

“Still an idiot but how could you think I was sad,” Vanessa said. “When we’re underwater, I know exactly what you’re feeling. Doesn’t it work both ways?”

“I might have been focused too much on my own thoughts,” Beric confessed. “This life…”

“Is with you, right?”

“Absolutely,” Beric said.

“You’re the first person to give me a choice,” Vanessa said. “The boys growing up always called us a sacrifice, meaning we were useless. Some tried to use it to their advantage, let me fuck you and we can be attached, so you don’t get sacrificed.”

“Bastards,” Beric muttered. “I stole you from the village.”

“You rescued me and gave me a choice,” Vanessa said. “This is the one and only time we’re having this discussion. Do you want me as your mate?”

“Yes,” Beric said.

“Then don’t try sending me away,” Vanessa poked him in the chest. “I came to you voluntarily and I intend to stay. If you don’t like it, then you go to the damn city. I’ll take the ocean any day.”

He grabbed her finger and licked the length of it. He watched her nipples harden. “You think you get the ocean over me?”

“Yes,” she let him pull her closer.

“I guess I better keep you,” he pulled her tight against his hard cock. “The ocean appears to be in our souls.”

“Don’t doubt me,” she put her hand firmly on his chest.

“Never again,” he assured her.

Once Upon a Christmas – Annie & Tobie’s Christmas Wish

Cree Nations

“Kids I’m sorry. I tried. I can’t let the two of you keep holding on to hope. Wishes just don’t come true. They’re like dreams; they disappear with the light of day.”

Tobie being the oldest by seven minutes, and self-appointed protector of his twin sister, Annie, refused to believe this and wasn’t going to stand for their Gramps to crush Annie’s dream. “Gramps we always made Christmas wishes before Mama died and you can’t deny they would come true.”

The love in his grandson’s eyes, and the earnestness he heard in his voice brought tears and memories of his daughter. She’d come home two years ago, bringing her two small children with her. He’d known right away she wasn’t well but he’d never thought she was dying. He’ll never forget her coming downstairs one night after putting the children to bed. She’d knelt down in front of him as he sat there reading his book and told him. “Dad I’m not going to get well. I have cancer.” He’d tried to tell her they would get her help, that there was treatment for cancer, but she’d hit with the words, “Dad it’s terminal. I’ve had two rounds of chemo and for a few months the doctors thought I was in remission. But it came back. No treatment will help me.” He’d pulled her up into his lap and held her in his arms as they’d cried together. “Will you keep Tobie and Annie here with you?”   She’d gone on to tell him the military had changed his status from missing in action to killed in action and there was no one else to care for the children. He’d promised her he would take care of them.

It’d been a hard two years for the three of them. The first Christmas was really difficult, the kids crying and saying it wasn’t Christmas without Mommie. Now with Christmas two months away Tobie and Annie came to him telling him they were writing a letter to Santa Claus asking him to bring their Daddy home to them for Christmas.  “It’s our Christmas wish.
