How did you wind up narrating audiobooks? Was it always your goal or was it something you stumbled into by chance?
I had no idea I wanted to do this until I did. I wrote a novel 15 plus years ago that should really never see the light of day. About 5 years ago I began another novel that I wrote half of and never finished. I have a very hard time working on things as ADD apparently has my mind constantly changing courses. However, the half written book was a touch better than my first and I wondered if I had it published in book format, what the process was for turning it into an audiobook. Investigating that information, I found ACX. When I found out I could audition to narrate a title and be involved in the world I desperately wanted to be a part of, without my fingers sitting on a keyboard and not typing, I knew I had to give it a try.
Are you an audiobook listener? What about the audiobook format appeals to you?
Most definitely! I love audiobooks and if I am not performing them, I am likely listening to them. I love the power of words and a good story. As my life began to get busy and my time to read grew less, something had to give. Unfortunately, reading for fun is what was given up. With audiobooks, I get that back as I can listen to the story told by amazing performers while I perform other tasks that typically are boring and/or monotonous.
What would you say are your strongest narration abilities?
I would say I am strongest whenever performing a character. I really delve deep into the lives of my characters and try to bring them through with my performance. I don’t have the “golden” voice many narrators have and honestly think that’s where I can use the most improvement. However, I love my characters…. Often a little too much as I start speaking in their voice or mannerisms at times… I’m not crazy, just a narrator.
Is there a particular genre you feel unsuited for? Have you ever declined a project because you didn’t think you were right for it?
At this point in my career, I am not sure how suited I really would be at non-fiction titles. I have been offered several non-fiction projects that I have not taken yet as I prefer titles that allow me to jump into character and create a life through my performance. While that is still possible in non-fiction, I just don’t know if I could bring the same “love and passion” to my performance. Perhaps as my narration career grows, so will my desire to perform non-fiction titles.
How closely do you prefer to work with authors?
This business is a bit funny when it comes to working with authors. I prefer to work directly with my authors to ensure a final product that “They” are proud of. However, once you begin to work with major publishers, the narrator may never discuss one thing with the author and authors often have very little say in the direction of the production themselves. I feel as though the consumer is going to get a much better product if I deliver the performance when I have had a chance to discuss with the authors about their ideals and directions to character.
How did you decide how each character should sound in this title?
The first thing I usually do is discuss character accents or mannerisms with the author. I typically ask for a casting sheet if they were to cast these characters for a movie, who would they pick. That doesn’t always transfer over well, but after I go through the first read of a book, I usually get a good feeling as to who these characters are and how they should be represented. It’s not always perfect, which is when closely working with the author pays off. Aaron was terrific with offering guidance on the characters and when the right voice is found it truly is exciting.
What types of things are harmful to your voice?
There is likely a large list of things including caffeinated beverages…However, the main things that seems to stop production for me is allergies and asthma. Both medical issues really change the way your voice is perceived and maintaining the same caliber of production in either case is usually a fruitless endeavor.
Do you read reviews for your audiobooks? If so, which ones stand out to you most, positive or negative?
I make it a point to read all reviews of my performances. The negative reviews can be helpful in some cases, but in others I don’t understand what happened in people’s lives that they think they have to troll other people to feel good about themselves. I couldn’t ever imagine leaving a 1 star review, as I refuse to be that person. I will always find something I like about other people’s artistic endeavors, even if I don’t like everything as a whole. Regardless though, all the positive feedback and reviews stand out so much more! It makes being involved in the business very rewarding. I love my fans and really appreciate when they reach out to let me know how much they enjoyed my performance.
Who is your “dream author” that you would like to record for?
There is this really great author by the name of Aaron Bunce…. Oh wait… just a sec….. Other than Aaron and some of the other fabulous authors I have already gotten a chance to work with, I would really like to work with Brandon Sanderson and/or Stephen King as I am a big fan of both.
What’s next for you?
I am currently finishing up the 4th book in the Stephen Moorehouse Mystery Series, “The Monarch Graveyard” by James R Nelson. Once that is complete I will begin production of Jon Athan’s novel “Maneater”.

Born and raised in Yarborough, Thorben showcased a quick mind and knack for mechanical components from an early age. The largest and most physically imposing of the mules, Gor is a mountain of a man. He has short, sand-colored hair, a wide flat nose, and close-set eyes. Tell us about yourself.
I
am a wife and mother of five (ages 14-19). I left corporate America behind a
few years ago to raise my kids in North Carolina. During this time I gravitated
back to my first love – writing fiction, particularly stories with supernatural
elements. For a while I was a ghost writer for cozy mysteries and romance, but
once my confidence increased in my abilities, I struck out on my own to write
under my own name. I have two paranormal romance short stories published in
anthologies (The Bowman’s Inn
Autumn/Winter 2017 Anthology and After
Dark: 9 Modern Takes on Classic Fairy Tales). When I’m not writing I’m
doing the mom thing, but hope to add more travel adventures soon, particularly
to Ireland where my female main character from the Greylyn the Guardian Angel series is from and where most on Book 3
will take place.
When did you know you wanted to be an author?
Since birth. Always wanted to write. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t want to be the next Stephen King, but real life got in the way for a good chunk of my life when I had to do the adulting thing – college, career in a field I really had no interest in, more schooling to get an advanced degree in a field I had no interest in, and then kids came along.
What genres do you like to read?
I love paranormal and fantasy fiction, which is what I write. However, I am a huge fan of historical fiction (anything to do with the Tudors and Ancient Egypt) and military thrillers.
Are these the same genres you write in?
I write fantasy and paranormal fiction with a heaping helping of romance, but I do have ideas for other stories outside the genre.
Is your book for adults, young adults or children?
18 years old and up is my target audience; however, I would
guess 15+ could also read it since there’s no sex, only romantic angst.
What is your current release or project?
I just sent Book 2 of the Greylyn the Guardian Angel series, current working title Revelations, to the publisher. Book 3 is in the editing stage and looks like the characters aren’t done with me yet so planning out Book 4 and perhaps 5.
Tell us about the key characters.
Greylyn is a guardian angel. She’s roamed the Earth for 450
years protecting humans and saving them from their own inner demons and the
more nefarious real ones. She’s originally from Ireland, but has no memory of
her human life.

Greylyn gulped in air. She wasn’t dead, not yet. Renewed energy pulsated through her body and gave her strength to push herself up on shaky arms. She stared, turning to look at each man as they circled each other. Both men with deadly intent etched on their faces. In between getting hit, and throwing jabs of his own, the stranger muttered, “Had to be you! It just had to be you!” One final uppercut to Jasper’s jaw, and the guardian angel fell back.
Her mouth opened to scream for
him to leave Jasper alone, but no words came out. He turned to her, his face
bloodied, but with a sad smile. “Until next time, love.” Seconds later, he
vanished down the alleyway.
Suddenly able to move again,
Greylyn jumped up and ran over to Jasper. “Who the hell was that?”
“Oh, I’m fine, by the way.”
With the indignant look he flashed her, she knew Jasper was far from being
fine. Physically, yes, he was alright. But his icy-blue eyes spoke volumes of
fury she could not under-stand.
“I’m so sorry …” She checked
him for injuries, hands roved over his body. His clothes were spatter-ed with
blood. Other than his pride, and a black eye that would fade in an hour or two,
he was in perfect shape.
Greylyn knew she looked a mess.
Hell, she should be dead. Instead, the blood had already dried and the sizzle
of her bones mending underneath her skin comforted her.
I’m not going to die. At
least not tonight.
Jasper cupped her chin. “Yes, I
know. It’s my fault. It was too soon to send you out on your own like that. I
realized my mistake and came to find you, in case you needed assistance.” A
nerve twitched in his jaw. “And, I find I was correct. You certainly needed
help.”
“Oh, no! Edward? Did he escape?
I came out here looking for him, but these guys,” she waved her hand toward the
corpses littering the alley, “were after him and …”
“Yes, yes. I get it. You ran
into the bad guys and as a bonus, you got a bloody dark guardian your first
time on your own.”
“A what?”
“A dark guardian. The exact
opposite of us, darling. You are just lucky I came along when I did. That one
would’ve carved you up like a porterhouse steak.” He pushed himself off the
ground. At his full height of well over six feet tall, he towered above her.
“Does this dark guardian have a
name?” She didn’t know why it mattered that she find out his name.
Jasper narrowed his eyes at her
in obvious disapproval. “That one in particular is Kael,” Jasper spat. “Truly
nasty piece of work. Avoid him at all costs. Hopefully, you will never have to
see that creature again.”
He turned toward her and grabbed her by the upper
arms, leaning forward so they were nose to nose. An aroma of whiskey and
tobacco wafted into her face. “Greylyn, promise me that you will stay away from
Kael. If he ever crosses your path, either annihilate him completely with your
dagger through his heart and then rip it out of his body while it’s still
beating; or run. Just run.”
Do you have a favorite scene?
Greylyn gets cornered by a shadow creature and ends up jumping into a deep koi pond to escape. Problem is, she can’t swim. But someone tall, dark, and incredibly handsome saves her. She’s more humiliated when she has to reveal that she still can’t swim after 450 years on Earth.
What advice would you give a beginner?
Trust your story to unfold naturally. Seek help from other authors, but stay true to your story. Some people think you have to follow a template for creating the story, but sometimes the story in your head has other ideas. Trust that story.
