Ariel Paiement

Ariel Paiement and I met through social media. We both share a love of fantasy.

Author Bio

Ariel Paiement is a fantasy author who writes the occasional historical fiction or science fiction novel. She enjoys all ranges of books and writing when it comes to reading, though fantasy and science fiction are her favorites. She likes to spend time coming up with new ideas or in wild flights of imagination. If asked what she spends most of her time doing, she’d tell you that she spends most of it reading or writing one thing or another. She is the author of On the Narrow Way in the anthology Above and Beneath: The World of Angels and Demons and has also written and published In Darkness Lost, a stand-alone fantasy adventure novel. Her novel, Bane of Ashkarith, is coming out on July 31st and is the first in the Legends of Alcardia series.

Tell us about yourself.

I’m a fantasy author who dabbles in some sci-fi and historical fiction. I also occasionally write Christian fiction. I’m not predominantly a Christian fiction author, but since I am a Christian, some of the traditional values from a Judeo-Christian worldview do come out in the books I write. Of course, that’s true of any author’s viewpoint since no one writes without a bias.

As a writer, one of the things that I’m committed to is showing that doing the wrong thing does have consequences on the characters and those around them. I realize this is becoming less and less important to many people, but I believe that showing that there are consequences to morally incorrect or generally poor decision-making is a part of making the books I write truer to reality.

Besides creating well-rounded characters, I’m pretty big on world-building. I love creating and fleshing out the worlds I place my characters in, and in many cases, the worlds become almost like another character in the book’s cast for me. My goal with every book is to immerse the reader in the world through the character’s eyes so that the reader can have the full high fantasy or alternate world fantasy experience.

But above all, my greatest goal with each book I write is to create something that people of varied backgrounds and age groups can enjoy. While not every book will be “family-friendly” or YA, I strive to have a variety so that younger and older readers can find something within the worlds I’ve created that will appeal to them.

When did you know you wanted to be an author?

I’m not sure I had a specific defining moment where I thought, yeah, I’m going to be an author. I’ve been writing since I was pretty young, and I always wanted to tell my stories to the rest of the world, so I guess you could say that the idea of being an author started fairly young even if I didn’t have enough understanding of the concept at the time to put a label on it.

What genres do you like to read?  Are these the same genres you write in?

Definitely fantasy and sci-fi! But I also enjoy lots of other genres. I’m not a particularly picky reader, though my favorites tend to be fantasy, sci-fi, and paranormal. Those are pretty much the same genres I write, though I haven’t really done anything paranormal. I stick to fantasy and the occasional sci-fi short story or experimental piece.

Is your book for adults, young adults or children?

Bane of Ashkarith is suitable for anyone in their pre-teens or above. The book is written to appeal mainly to a young adult and adult audience, but it doesn’t contain content that would be objectionable for older children to enjoy. There is some violence and a bit of gore in places, but nothing extreme, and there are only a few places where it’s shown.

What is your current release or project?

Bane of Ashkarith is my current release with the revised version of In Darkness Lost, my first published novel, following it at the end of November.

Tell us about the key characters

The two main characters in Bane of Ashkarith are a husband-and-wife team. They work as Seekers—their world’s equivalent of archaeologists—for the Society of the Learned, or the Society for short. The two of them specialize in the mythology of their world, and on a dig site, while trying to prove that there really was a battle between the gods there, they come across a journal that belongs to the Queen of one of the sides in the battle. This sends them off on a mission to determine the validity of the journal’s claims.

Both characters are stubborn and determined, and both value truth a great deal. They risk life and limb throughout the novel’s course just to find out whether or not the diary is telling the truth about what happened between the supposed gods of the old world. They keep going despite the dangers and uncertainty, and they work well as a team through the whole thing.

What is your blurb or synopsis of the book?

Kaidan Tadegan is working on a new site trying to prove the myth that two armies of the gods clashed there. While on the dig site, he discovers the evidence he’s looking for, but he gets more than he bargained for when he discovers a woman’s bones in a section of the dig site where no other remains have been found.

As he digs the bones out, he discovers a journal with the woman’s body, which tells a story that, if true, will turn the myths of the old world and the established concepts of good and evil on their heads. Startled by the find, Kaidan sets out to discover whether the diary’s claims have any validity.

But when the diary leads to a city that’s supposedly long gone, Kaidan’s journey becomes more difficult than expected. Things become even more tangled when he discovers that the city isn’t gone, but it’s no place for the living.

Unable to give up on his quest, he forges ahead. What lies ahead is uncertain, and even more uncertain is whether Kaidan will survive this quest. He has only two questions in his mind. Will he find the truth in this city of the dead? And will the world accept the truth?

Share an excerpt

KAIDAN Tadegan straightened for a moment, pausing in his work. He wiped the sweat from his brow and craned his neck to see over the hill’s rise. The rest of the dig crew was still working on the opposite side of the hill. Stretching, he picked his shovel back up and returned to digging into the side of Dubarin Hill.

He worked with fervor but also with care, not wanting to damage anything. The sun glared down on him, roasting him alive, and he wiped the back of his neck with a cloth. Nothing had rewarded him for his labor yet, but that didn’t mean it wouldn’t. Perhaps he might find something on this side of the hill to answer the questions they’d come here to answer.

He took a deep breath, the musty scent of freshly turned soil filling his senses. Well, even if they never determined whether those who had clashed here were the old gods, they’d at least proven that there had been a battle. That was something. They could hold their heads high when they spoke to the king of Argos about the dig, and when they returned to the Society of the Learned, they’d have something to report.

The hole he was digging had turned into an open-roofed tunnel that sloped gradually downward as he went. Perhaps he’d gone a bit overboard. But he had a good feeling about this area. He could just sense it in his bones. There was something here. He just had to find it.

At around seven feet down into the side of the hill, his shovel struck something with a dull thud. He tested the soil with the tip of the shovel, trying to determine what it was. When he shifted some more dirt, he saw a flash of white under the sun. More bones?

Kaidan knelt in the hole and brushed the loose layer of dirt away. The yellow-white bones of a corpse glared up at him in the harsh rays of the sun, dirt still packed around the majority of the remains. He hadn’t found any bones on this side of the hill, and he’d begun to think the battle hadn’t raged this far. Perhaps they just hadn’t dug in the right places. It seemed they’d given up too soon.

Kneeling, he brushed the dirt away and grabbed a trowel, gently clearing packed clods of dirt and loose soil away from the corpse. When he had, he backed further up the slope and sat on his heels, staring down at it.

Inside the tunnel, the bones rested. Time and worms had rotted through the clothing of the deceased individual. The slender facial structure of the skull and the tiny stature indicated it was a woman. He frowned. Who is this? They hadn’t found any women’s corpses in the battlefield. What was this one doing all by herself out here?

A book lay locked against the corpse’s chest, her skeletal hands clutching it to her even in the rigor of death. He leaned down, seeking to pry it from the hands of the skeleton. The hands wouldn’t budge. Strange. The tendons were long gone. Nothing should be stopping him from moving the bones. Kaidan put his hands on his hips. Well, destroying the corpse wouldn’t do. Too disrespectful to the dead. He’d have to try a different angle. Jumping down into the hole again, he tried to slide the book out of the corpse’s grasp.

This time, the hands relinquished their prize, and he stared down at the book’s unmarked leather cover, which was worn with age and crusted in dirt. A quiver ran through him, and he grinned. What treasures of knowledge did this find contain? He took a closer look at it, rubbing at the dirt on the corners before pausing in his attempts to clean the item. The leather binding was in remarkable condition for the age of the corpse.

He glanced back at the bones. Far too old for the condition of the book. So how had the skeleton come to be clutching the book in the tight grip of death? He clambered back up to the mouth of his open-roofed tunnel and sat down, dropping the book beside him. What secrets did the skeleton hold that she would never share now? His mind whirred through the possibilities, and he glanced down at the book. Perhaps it held the answers.

Do you have a favorite scene?

This one is tough because I have lots that I like. But I’d say one of my favorite scenes takes place after the air captain, who transported the two main characters to the area around Ashkarith, has just picked them back up at a village in the same area. The two had just returned from their trip into Ashkarith, and they were looking for an air ship to take them home when he showed up. I love the scene because the two main characters are so confused about how the captain knew to show up, and the banter between the three as they reunite was a lot of fun to write. But I think my favorite thing about the scene is the last part where the captain tells them that “sometimes people would rather stay blind” to the truth. This is really the pivotal moment where Kaidan and Zerua come face to face with what it might cost them to tell the truth. They knew before this moment, but now it really sinks in fully, and they make the final decision that they’re going to share the truth they uncovered anyway. They’d been struggling with that very decision the entire novel, and here they finally settle that struggle.

What advice would you give a beginner?

Keep writing, and don’t ignore the advice of those who have gone before you. Don’t let your pride or your insecurity get in the way of your growth. I’ve known writers on both sides of the spectrum, and both end up quitting. Writing is hard work. Whether you tend to have a better opinion of your work than you should or are more insecure about it than you should be, you need to understand that what you’re writing is going to stink—at first. But that’s okay. That’s why you need to stick with it. Because the only way you can stop stinking at it is to work at it and to learn from the people who have already walked the path you’re now taking. If you enjoy it, don’t give up even when it’s hard.

Be humble and have an honest perspective of your work. Know your flaws, but know your strengths too. Then find the ways you can fix the flaws and improve the strengths. Never turn down free help, no matter how harsh the person might seem.

Not everyone will be a fan, but knowing why they’re not a fan might help you find a way to convert them to being part of your fan group later on. You don’t get that chance if you dismiss their criticism just because it doesn’t paint a perfect picture of your work.

There’s a grain of truth even in the harshest critiques most of the time. Be discerning and don’t swallow everything you’re told—this is where reading books on writing and learning about the craft from published authors and well-known writers or editors helps—but at least consider everything you’re given for a moment aside from pride or insecurity.

Ken Stark

Ken Stark and I bumped into each other on social media. He writes in horror which is way outside my purview.

Author Bio

Ken Stark doesn’t only write horror, but he mostly does. Why? Because when it comes to shining a light on the best and worst of mankind’s nature, nothing works better than a dark backdrop. If it happens to give a few people nightmares along the way, he’ll just take that as a bonus.

Ken lives in Vancouver, Canada, and when he isn’t writing, he can most often be found reading, painting, or dreaming of a beach house in Hawaii.

Tell us about yourself.

Thank you, Eileen. My name is Ken Stark, and I am a horror and dark fiction writer from Vancouver, Canada. I started making up stories as soon as I could hold a pen, so I’ve been at this for a long time. I mostly started stories I would never finish, but I finally wrote a complete novel in my teens and sent it around to the top New York publishers, assuming they would all line up to throw bundles of cash my way. Sadly I was wrong, and the rejection letters hit me hard. I still wrote after that, but it was always just for me. Flash forward a few decades, and I was ready to try again. This time, my manuscript was picked up by the first publisher I contacted, and I haven’t looked back since.

When did you know you wanted to be an author?

Honestly, right from the beginning. Some of my earliest memories are of me sitting on my bed, scribbling in a notebook. Like I said, those stories rarely got finished, and none of them were any good, but the desire to create alternate realities was always there.

What genres do you like to read?  Are these the same genres you write in?

I read anything and everything. All that matters to me is the story. Even if I didn’t like a lot of different genres, I think it’s important for writers to explore outside their insular little worlds. There are a lot of writers out there doing a lot of amazing things, and you never know where you’ll find inspiration.

Is your book for adults, young adults or children?

My books are a little too graphic for young children, but I make no distinction between YA readers and adult readers. A few years doesn’t suddenly make a person wiser or more sophisticated. Young people know what they like, so if they’re okay with a little swearing and a few nightmares, then so am I. Arcadia Falls is the only novel I ever wrote with a younger reader in mind, so I kept the language clean, but that was the only concession I made. And really, that was for the younger readers’ parents more than the younger readers.

What is your current release or project?

My latest release is Stage 3: Bravo, the third book in my post-apocalyptic Stage 3 series.

Tell us about the key characters

Hank Mason was always a loner, so he was fully prepared to take on the apocalypse single-handedly until a young girl reminded him of what it meant to be human.

Mackenzie Cullen was only ten years old when the world turned upside down, but she adapted quickly. Smart, brave and fiercely loyal, she sees the world as it is, not as it used to be.

Sarah Cullen is technically Mackenzie’s aunt, but she raised the girl from infancy. Never one to back down from a fight or be the damsel in distress, she is Mason’s equal in every way. As a nurse, she dedicated her life to helping others, but she’ll stop at nothing to keep her little girl safe.

What is your blurb or synopsis of the book?

Hank Mason thought he had nothing left lose.

But then came Mackenzie. And then came Sarah. And then came the others.

Though these seven souls had somehow survived the first days of the epidemic, every minute in this new world comes at a price.

Thrown into a relentless battle against a population turned feral on one side and desperate men willing to do anything to stay alive on the other, the only question remaining was how much they were willing to pay to survive.

Now, those precious few are in a desperate race to save one more lost soul, and time is running out. The clock started ticking the moment they pulled into that forgotten little corner of a world gone mad, and every second brings them closer to death.

They’ll have to find a way out, or die trying.

Share an excerpt

No one dared utter so much as a whisper, but Mason had no need of words to know what they were all thinking. It was suicide. Sheer, unthinking suicide. They would all be dead as soon as they opened that door. Even if they somehow managed to pile through without the slightest breath of sound, they were dead as soon as their feet hit the pavement. If they somehow survived long enough to sneak a few steps into the swarm, they would be dead before they’d crossed a dozen feet. If by some miracle they weren’t torn to ribbons by then, they would never be so lucky as to make it all the way to the other loading bay nearly a hundred feet away. And even if they somehow accomplished that impossibility, they would then have to quickly and silently break through a door that was a carbon copy of this one. Metal, with a little square of reinforced glass.

It was ridiculous to even consider. Impossible, by anyone’s measure. Mason would be throwing his life away on a ridiculous venture destined to fail before it had even begun. And with it, he’d be throwing away everyone else’s life, too.

He checked his watch. It was 5:15. By 5:17, it would all be over. 5:17. Everyone he knew in the world would be dead by 5:17. He tried to come up with the day’s date as if knowing exactly when all of his friends were to die might give him some peace, but as much as he tried to calculate backwards, he simply couldn’t. Was it still July? Were they into August yet? What day of the week was it? Friday? Monday?

It was a wasted effort. In this new world, days and dates had no meaning. All they had was now. Still, one vestige of the old ways pervaded Mason’s thought.

     God, I hope it’s not Monday…..I’d hate to die on a Monday…...

Addison fell back to let Sarah squeeze in beside Mason and have a look for herself. She said nothing, but her tightening grip on Mason’s arm spoke volumes. Then Becks poked her head between the two, and she did speak, but in a hush low enough to have been a mere whisper on the breeze.

“You can’t,” she pleaded with both of them, “There has to be another way.”

“There isn’t,” Sarah hushed back, and with one last gentle squeeze of Mason’s arm, her fingers trailed down to his hand, their fingertips kissed, and she stepped away to leave him and Becks alone for the last moments they were likely to have.

And yet, Mason didn’t say a word to Becks. In his mind, he didn’t have to. Whatever he’d needed to say had been said, and for perhaps the first time in his life, he was at peace with himself. He reached out and found Becks’ hand waiting for his, but it didn’t linger there. That last connection made and his heart at ease, Mason released her hand and gave the signal. Then he slowly and gently slid back the deadbolt.

Do you have a favorite scene?

There’s a scene on the rooftop that I absolutely love. No spoilers, but one member of the group is preparing to make the ultimate sacrifice, and it shows not only the sheer horror of this new world, but how far they’ve all come. It was a very emotional scene to write, and I think it came out beautifully.

What advice would you give a beginner?

I always give new writers the same advice. Just write. It doesn’t matter what, it doesn’t matter how long it takes, and it doesn’t matter if it’s any good at all. The only way to get better at anything is by doing it over and over and over again, so if you want to be a writer, write! Trust me when I say that the words you write today will always be your worst. Every sentence you write from that moment on will only make you better, so forget about trying to create a masterpiece and just write!

Thanks for letting me stop by, Eileen. This was fun!

Noelle Rahn-Johnson

Noelle and I started talking on social media and we have a lot in common including a nearly similar book title! She’s from the Midwest and so am I!

Author Bio

Noelle currently lives in Northern Minnesota with her husband, their four children, two dogs, two rats, a handful of goldfish, and a very spoiled cat. She spends most of her days puttering away on the keyboard with a breathtaking view of a lake in her backyard as a source of tranquil inspiration. Her and her husband were high school sweethearts, and will be celebrating their 25th year of wedded bliss in August of 2017. She enjoys fishing, reading, shopping, writing, and spending time with her family.

Tell us about yourself

Well, I’m a married, mom of 4 with a granddaughter. I’ve been writing since 2014, but didn’t publish my first book until 2015. I currently have 9 books out and writing 2 at the same time currently. I live on a lake in northern Minnesota with my hubs of 25+ years, 2 kids, 2 dogs, 2 cats, 6 pet rats and a handful of fish.

When did you know you wanted to be an author?

I didn’t know I wanted to be an author. I just had an idea of a story one day and wrote it down. It became the Pieces Trilogy and I just haven’t stopped since.

What genres do you like to read?  Are these the same genres you write in?

I’m a romance freak. Any HEA romance except for historical, I’m good. I write what I read. Contemporary, shifter, vampire, NA/College. 18+, I like it steamy but not over the top.

Is your book for adults, young adults or children?

My books are all 18+ because of the language and sexual scenes. But they are not erotica or 50 shades. I have written a child’s book, but I’m waiting for some more money to come in so I can get the illustrations done.

What is your current release or project?

The last book I did release was Secrets Past. I’m currently writing Hidden in the shadows which is book 2 in the Shadows series AND The Queen’s Justice, which is a stand alone.

Tell us about the key characters

Well, in Hidden in the Shadows there is Samuel who is a skinny red head and a red macaw shifter. Jamison is a silver backed Ape in Remote Oregon. They meet under different situations and there is sex, drama and love.

What is your blurb or synopsis of the book?

Squatting on the forest floor, hidden behind and under the tall, thick ferns, Jamison watches as a red macaw flies and dodges trees, scrambling away from two other macaws chasing him.

When the red bird miscalculates his turn, and flies head on into a tree, the other two birds squawk and fly away.

Jamison lumbers over to where the injured bird lays. Seeing that the bird may be injured, he carefully picks it up with his huge, thick hands and cradles it into his massive chest. He brings it to his home to take care of it until it heals.

When Sam wakes, he’s no longer in the forest trying to get away from the aggressive female and male shifters. But now he’s lying on a soft leather couch. In someone’s home.

The female and her boyfriend wanted a three-some, but Sam’s not bi, he’s totally GAY!

He knows he won’t have children the normal way, but adopting isn’t out of the question. Sam’s lived his adult life alone. His parents abandoned him when he came out to them as gay. And that didn’t sit well with their flighty and all-mighty life style.

When Sam meets Jamison’s almost black eyes, attraction, heat and ‘mate’ screeches through his brain. Sam’s a skinny white boy with flaming red hair.

Will this lumbering, muscular, dark chocolate skinned, shifter of a man want him?

Could the hulking man want more than just him and a roll in the leaves?

Will their animal shifter be accepting of each other?

One flying and the other a chest pounding, beefy shifter?

Chapter 1

Jamison

I’ve lived on the very outskirts of this town called Remote, Oregon for all my adult life alone. For three reasons only-It’s beautiful, private and quiet. Those three things alone make it worth my while, but also my animal can go ape wild if he wants too and we don’t need to worry about humans interfering. My beast doesn’t like being alone, but I can’t help that.

There are a few shifters in this area, but we pretty much keep to ourselves. Shifters are all over the world, not just where their animal is originally native from.

I live in a small two-bedroom one-bathroom rustic cabin home. I have wood to burn for heat, and a small heater in my bedroom for those freezing cold nights when my balls are about to fall off. I have electric and running water, so I’m not too far off the grid, but I do like my peace and quiet. And my small home is right on the edge of the forest and mountains.

Currently, I’m in my animal form munching on the berries I love so much, and my huge sausage looking fingers squish a few, so I lick the berry juice off them. I drop a few as I’m startled by a loud squawk and a few screeches coming from somewhere in the upper boughs of the massive pine trees. I’m sitting here in the depths of the forest, forced to listen to the constant squawking of the damn birds flying overhead.

Do you have a favorite scene?

Not yet. I’m only about 12,000+ words into the book, but it’s already getting interesting.

What advice would you give a beginner?

Don’t give up on your writing. Stay writing one book at a time or you’ll never finish. Promote, promote promote!! If you wont do it, it wont sell. If you have questions, ASK them!! Nothing is stupid if you don’t know the answer to it.

Tell us about the key characters

Cole is a billionaire focused on continually making money and enjoying his bachelor status to the max at the beginning of the book.  However by the end of the week he spends with Mari, he is seeing there’s so much more to life and makes changes necessary to expand his lifestyle to include a monogamous relationship with Mari, changes in his corporate life and weaving philanthropy deeply into his new life with Mari.

Cole in his own words:

I’m a nose to the grindstone kind of guy.  I learned everything I know about making money from my best friend’s father.  He’s one rich bastard. I intend to be richer.  I’m close, very close, and I’m not stopping now.  The only time I’m not working on my bottom-line is when I’m with women.  When it comes to women, I’m a player.  I admit it.  In fact, I own it.  I’m proud of the fact that I’ve fucked more women than I can count.  I’m not opposed to going at it all night, but one night is where I draw the line.  My rule?  Avoid relationships like the plague.  They’re messy.  I’m used to my conquests seeing me as a means to an end.  They like to be seen with me. I’m good in bed and the women who share mine like having that bragging rights.  They aren’t interested in the man behind the money.  That’s always been all right by me.
But when Kode, my best friend, decides to hold his wedding and the week-long celebrations before it at the Empress Hotel on Grand Cayman Island, I see her.  She’s the only bright spot through all the boredom of schmoozing with the rich and famous.  She’s a little sandy blonde spitfire who works as the Empress Hotel event planner.  Her startling light blue eyes captivated me.  She would laugh and flirt with everyone making sure they had a good time, except me.  I couldn’t stop following her with my eyes as she flitted from one place to the next.  But she avoided my eyes whenever she was near me.  Never before have I had a woman totally ignore me.  She was such an enigma.  Yet somehow, it made me want her more.

Mari is strong woman who has been knocked down by life and stands back up to continued on in her own terms.  She was born wealthy but turned her back on it to marry for love instead of producing baby billionaires. When her husband and daughter were killed she finished her college education and moved to Grand Cayman Island to start an entirely new life.

Mari in her own words:

I’m an event planner at the Empress Hotel on Grand Cayman Island.  I escaped there to begin my life over again after my husband and daughter were killed in a vehicular homicide.  I’ve been celibate since then by choice.  One man who was present for all the parties to celebrate the wedding I have been working on this week stood out from all the rest.  He was breathtaking to look at.  I felt a sexual charge whenever I was near him but I refused to make eye contact.  He was a hot topic among the other women working the events with me.  It was whispered that he was a business mogul himself who was regularly photographed with various beautiful women and fucked them all.  None of that interests me in the slightest.  But whenever I was near him I could feel the sexual energy pouring off his body, smell the pheromones in the air.  It made my insides quake whenever I felt him watching me, tracking my every movement – and that was the entire time I was in the same room with him. I felt his predatory power; his sexuality as his arresting blue eyes followed me, drank me in, and called to me.
The fact that he looked like a cross between an NFL quarterback and a male model didn’t help my peace of mind either.  His clothes were obviously tailor made for him fitting him to perfection in a way that accentuated his broad shoulders, expansive chest, narrow hips, and the bulge in the front of his pants. It spoke of another asset that made the women around him drool. But the last thing I wanted to do was hook up with a manwhore. And I certainly wasn’t interested in being just another notch on his bedpost.
But somehow his presence on the island made me want, no, need to make some changes in my life.  It’s time to stop the five-year drought of being celibate.  I now long to let my hair down and live life to the fullest instead of just planning other people’s life events for them. I love my job but all work and no play – or sex for that matter – is making me feel like I am being left behind and that simply has to change starting now.

When we near the Open Ceiling cave, the guide points out a red birch tree.  “The islanders call it the tourist tree because it is red and always peeling just like the tourists.”  He grins with amusement.  Everyone in our group chuckles at his humor.  He points out another very slender tree and tells us it is a pepper cinnamon tree that smells like cinnamon but tastes like pepper.  My curiosity got the best of me.  I had to go over and smell the bark.  “It really does smell like cinnamon,” I report to Cole.  “Come over here and give it a whiff.  It smells so nice.”

Cole inhales a lungful, and then leans over to whisper in my ear.  “I like the smell of your pussy better.”  The combination of his come-fuck-me voice his blatant gaze scatters goose bumps across my skin.  Even in this group of strangers, Cole’s eyes broadcast pure sex.  His look tells me he wants me and that he will take me and fucks me into submission the first opportunity he has.  I clench under his powerful stare.  My breath hitches and I blush.  He smiles at my body’s response.  One of the pair of older women walking behind us fans herself dramatically before she looks at her friend and says, “I wish I had a man look at me like that!”  Then they giggle like schoolgirls.  She pats my arm as she walks by and tells me, “You’re a lucky girl to be with this one.”

I gaze up at Cole.  With his just-fucked hair, two-day growth on his strong jaw and molten blue eyes outlined with their sinfully long dark lashes, he is the epitome of male perfection.  “I am lucky, aren’t I?”  He gives my hand a little squeeze and winks at me.  Cole is trouble.  Big.  Fucking.  Trouble.  And he is making it difficult to breathe right now because my heart is beating so fast from the excitement of being near him.  Somebody needs to pinch me so I know I am not dreaming right now.

Definitely out of my league.  And he has ruined me for all other men with his lovemaking.  The bar was now simply set too high for any other man to live up too.

Do you have a favorite scene?

Daniel Peyton

Daniel and I met through social media.

Author Bio

Daniel enjoys writers’ conventions as well as genre conventions. Connecting with avid readers is a joy that he never passes up. He has been invited multiple times to speak at local schools about writing and his work. He has been a featured author for several radio and blogtalk programs, and is a returning guest and sometime substitute co-host for the Brian and Sherri radio program, where he helps interview other authors. Outside of writing and promoting his work, Daniel enjoys reading, dancing, music, drawing, cooking, and embroidery. He is a long time member of the Embroiderers Guild of America where he has taught classes in stitching. He plays four different instruments and has sung with the Oklahoma State Universities Presidents Masterworks. He has years of stage work behind him in tap, jazz, and ballet as well as Okinawan traditional and modern dance and music. Each week you can find him teaching classes at his church in Sunday school as well as the Life Development Institute of First Baptist Church of Morristown, Tennessee.

Tell us about yourself.

My name is Daniel Peyton. I am an author, professional dancer, musician, artist, teacher and researcher. I was born and raised in Oklahoma, spent the past 18 years living in the beautiful mountains of East Tennessee and recently relocated to Michigan.

When did you know you wanted to be an author?

I first caught the bug of authoring in the fourth grade. My teacher, Mrs. Rogers, gave us the assignment to just write. I fell in love with telling fantastic stories. In the nineth grade I wrote my first full novel and impressed the mother of my English teacher. Her mother was a professor of English and creative writing at the local university. She accidentally graded my book like it was one of her university students. When she discovered that it was from a ninth grader, she sent it back with a note encouraging me to keep going, for she found my story more well written than anything handed in by all of her students. That kind of encouragement is rare and sure to produce results.

What genres do you like to read?  Are these the same genres you write in?

Read and write in fantasy and science fiction. I also love to read classic literature like Dickens.

Is your book for adults, young adults or children?

The book that is coming out soon of my work is for adults, young adults might enjoy it, but it is targeted to an adult audience. My other books that have been published are mostly for young adult audience. The exception being Earths Last Starship, it is a bit more grown up than my other works.

What is your current release or project?

My newest release, which releases today, is called Remnant. It is a Christian Sci-Fi novel. This book weaves Biblical narratives into a thick futuristic dystopian novel. It centers around faith and the fight between politics, science, and religion.

Tell us about the key characters:

The two main characters you will follow throughout the whole book are Anna and Z. Anna is an astro-geologist, basically she studies rocks in space. She has an adventurous side, but lives with constant fear of being discovered by the anti-religious patrols. Z is a android/robot. He is a Z-550 unit, one of many that work for the sciences, government and military. Very human-like in appearance, Z is loyal, funny, and everything you’d expect an android to be. His understands humans, except for the concept of love, it violates all logic to him.

What is your blurb or synopsis of the book?

The year is 2522. Anna is a Remnant—a secret Christian in a world that has banned any form of religion.
She is also an astro-geologist working with her Robot, named Z, for the Planetary Science Commission.
The PSC has worked for 200 years to find alien life on another planet, and finally, after two centuries, a primitive lifeform has been discovered. Faced with the reality of evolved primitives on a forested moon, Anna begins to question all she has ever believed.
Anna and Z travel to the newly-discovered moon in search of answers, but a terrible accident leaves them stranded. Faced with dangerous natives and unfamiliar surroundings, Anna and Z stumble upon a conspiracy that has universal implications.
Will Anna discover the truth about the moon and its inhabitants?
Can God still move within a culture that has abandoned Him?

Anna’s palms were sweating. Her heart raced so fast, she worried that it would jump out of her chest. Quickly, she hid around a corner of a building on campus and pressed her back up against the cold, rough bricks. Only now did she force herself to breathe, but it came out in a trembling whimper.

In her mind she repeated, I’m just a short, blonde girl. Nothing special. They won’t notice me. They can’t notice me. Oh no, what if they find it?

Anna clutched her bookbag to her side, tightly pinching it closed.

   “Hey! You!”

Anna tensed up as she heard the yell of the security guard. A girl dashed into Anna’s sight and was grabbed by a man in military garb.

“I swear I’m not one of them! Please, don’t take me! Please, stop!” The girl screamed and struggled as she was unceremoniously dragged across the open quad, along with three others.

The brute of a soldier reared back and slapped her across the face, sprinkling the ground with blood from her nose. “Shut up!”

“We will not be silenced!” A new voice screamed; this time it was a young man. “The Word will live forever! Even if you kill all of the Remnants you find. God will find a way!”

Anna knew this voice well. She carefully looked around the corner and prayed she was mistaken. He was her best friend. She looked through the dark at the crowd and gasped. Yes, it was he. There, in the clutches of a well-armed man, was Gideon.

The word came out without her meaning to say it.

“No.”

Gideon looked up and then quickly looked away, not wanting to incriminate her. The soldier noticed this and scanned the crowd to see if he could spot any accomplices. Anna, who was now surrounded by a dozen confused and scared students, watched this in horror. They weren’t part of the Underground, but that didn’t make this scene any less frightening to them. The guard gave off a grunt and then dragged Gideon back to the military landing craft along with the other captured students.

As the shuttle lifted into the air, Anna realized how tightly she had held her bookbag. Her hand hurt; the impression of the weave was embedded into her palm. Finally realizing it was over, she leaned up against the wall and bawled like a child, letting out the fear and sorrow that had welled up inside her.

She was inconsolable. Several other students came over and tried to get her to stop crying, but she couldn’t help herself.

“Stand back; let me through. Get to classes. I’ll help her.” A nicely dressed woman broke up the girls around Anna and then knelt down. “Anna, are you okay?”

Anna was finally able to speak through the tears, “It’s just not right. He was my friend.”

The professor pulled out a small handkerchief and wiped Anna’s face. “It always hurts when you find out anyone is part of that Underground. Stupid fools. They should know that they will be discovered. Don’t feel betrayed; he was never really your friend. Those types are only here to try and convert people to their backward ways and ideas.”

Anna paused and then slowly nodded, while saying, “Sure.”

The professor stood up as she said, “Good thing you’re one of our brightest students. Best Astro-Geologist major I’ve had the privilege of teaching in years. You would never have been brainwashed by them.”

“Of course not,” Anna said quietly.

“Okay, dry your eyes and dust yourself off. We have to get the class ready for the trip to the moon tomorrow. Being the teacher’s assistant, you’ll be leading the team on their mineral survey. I can’t wait to see you in action again.”

Anna didn’t stand up just yet, “I’ll be in class; just give me a moment.”

“I understand.” A buzzer sounded over the intercom. “Oops, I’m going to be late. Okay, see you in a few minutes.” The professor left in a hurry.

Anna waited until she was alone in the quad again. Opening her bag, she shuffled several books out of the way and found the one on the bottom. If they knew she had this, she would be right next to Gideon, facing whatever terrible fate all the Remnants endured. Was it worth it?

Do you have a favorite scene?

That would be hard to say. I have many that stick with me. I think one of the best scenes comes late in the book after the evil Dr. Skye thinks he has the upper hand with Z and commands him to betray Anna, but Z has left a nasty little surprise in all of Dr. Skye’s computers on the starship in orbit. Not only is it a great surprise for the readers, it is a hilarious scene to read. I did a lot of research into old comedy routines and sketchs to write that one.

What advice would you give a beginner?

Write. You can plan everything about your book for years, you can look at all the success of others with stars in your eyes. You can study all the ins and outs of publishing, but without a finished book you have nothing to truly give the publishing world.

Vi Carter

Vi Carter and I connected through social media.

Author Bio

When Vi Carter isn’t writing contemporary romance books, you can find her reading her favorite authors, baking, taking photos, or watching Netflix.

Married with one child, Vi divides her time between motherhood and all the other hats she wears as an Author.

Vi’s main goal is to give readers the same emotional ride that she got from reading Colleen Hoover and Jennifer L. Armentrout books.

Tell us about yourself

I think this is the part that so many of us authors dislike, well; I do. I feel like I’m always scrambling for something cool to say, like I live in a castle with ten dogs or something. But my life is pretty simple. I live in Ireland, in the countryside surrounded by cows and sheep. I’m not much of a people person so I like the isolation. I have a toddler who keeps me busy and another wee one to join us at Christmas.

When did you know you wanted to be an author?

In 2012 is when I first put pen to paper, but even then, I did it for me. It was others who encouraged me to publish it so I did.

What genres do you like to read?  Are these the same genres you write in?

My favorite genre is fantasy, I’m a huge vampire girl. But I’ve never written a vampire story. I write under two pen names; one hasn’t launched yet but is for my fantasy writing and the other which was launched October 2018 is for Contemporary Romance.

Is your book for adults, young adults or children?

Contemporary are for Young Adult and Adult. The All of Me Series is focused at a younger audience all the rest are Adult.

What is your current release or project?

I’ve released a Box-set of three books that I wrote in A Broken Heart Series.

What is your blurb or synopsis of the book?

***THE COMPLETE SERIES ***

BOOK ONE SAVING GRACE

I’ve tried so hard to bury my past.
But nothing stays buried forever…

It’s been two years since I lost so much. Two years since I started a new life, in a new college, with a new group of friends. Two years, and now my troubles are rushing back.

When Derek walked into my life, he made me feel things I’d hoped never to feel again. The box I hid all my secrets in is opening, and I don’t think I am able to keep it shut this time.

My past is back to haunt me, but Derek is my distraction but I’m not sure he’s enough to keep the ghosts away. I’m not sure if I’ll walk away fully intact this time.

BOOK TWO CLAIMING AMBER

He’s cold and unsociable but underneath the glinting, dangerous surface, there’s something I’m drawn to. I‘m intrigued.

Intrigued enough to throw caution to the wind and follow him down a very dangerous path. One I hope I come back from.

On the day I get arrested, I ring my best friend to bail me out, instead she sends her brother, Emmett Harrington. He’s a far cry from a knight in shining armor. He’s more like the prince of the criminal underworld. His armor–A 9mm pistol.

Turns out, he’s pissed off a lot of people. Before I realize it, I‘m kept hostage at one of his mansions.

But high walls and the force that is Emmett Harrington might not be enough to keep me safe.

BOOK THREE TAKING LAURA

This world breeds monsters in the form of men. There is no justice, or revenge, or higher power that will intervene. The only thing you can do is walk away and leave everything you know and love behind…

So, that’s what I did.

Laura

Leaving everything behind I sign myself into a psychiatric ward. All I want to do is sleep at night and not fear what might happen. The high gates and security mean safety that is, until I meet Craig.

Craig

I’m a recovering addict I’ve been clean for a year. The walls of the hospital offer me safety. I can’t leave if I do, I know I won’t survive. This place has become my salvation that is, until I meet Laura.

We get put together in a group assignment, and we must learn about each other, but the closer I get to Laura, the more I am forced to look at the person I am, and it isn’t pretty.

I wonder if you can truly fix something that wasn’t just broken but shattered?

Excerpt taken from Claiming Amber (Book 2 of A Broken Heart Series)

Russia was cold, and it was the kind of cold that bit into your skin. The kind that made you want to bite back.
“Mr. Harrington, welcome.” My Russian informant spoke over the noise of the helicopter blades that still spun.
I crouched down as I walked with him. “Where is he?”
“Mr. Harrington, my boss needs assurance that you will not kill him.” I stopped walking; the bite of the cold was keeping me in check, the pain like a rubber band against my wrist. A warning.
“No assurance. I am going to kill him.” I walked away now, into the waiting black car. My informant climbed in after me.
“Mr. Harrington, I cannot take you to him, then.” I pulled off my leather gloves and blew into my hands. The driver had the heating on and it felt like my skin was stretching from the change in temperature.
“Fine, I will not kill him.” I lied; I didn’t have the time to waste. I knew I was dealing with very dangerous people, here, but they didn’t know I had severed my link to my father. By the time they figured it out, I would be long gone, and the priest would be long dead. He studied me for a moment, and I let him. Finally, he nodded and told the driver the address in Russian.
We arrived at a rundown industrial estate and, as I went to get out of the car, he stopped me. “You need to step where I step, there are still active mines here.” He stepped out of the car and I followed him. I followed his steps precisely, not wanting to end up in bits, but I also took in my surroundings, escape routes, movements. We stepped across several wires that would have been invisible to the eye, but now that I knew what I was looking for, I could see the dew that clung to them. The driver moved behind me, and I tried to think how I could kill the priest and still walk away. But the closer I got to the building, the more I knew that this might be the one man that I wouldn’t cross off my list today. But there was always tomorrow.
We entered a building, the back wall gone, exposing a factory wall that was black from a fire long burned out. The dripping of water was in rhythm with our footfalls. We moved through the building and into another, each one destroyed. The walls that were still standing were decorated with bullet holes. Our polished shoes and overpriced suits didn’t belong here, or maybe they did.
We entered a room, and the nervous shuffle from the man who sat in the center made my stomach twist. I couldn’t see his face, as it was covered with a sack. His hands and feet were bound to the chair.
“Ask your questions, then we leave Mr. Harrington.” I nodded. I had no questions. I really had two things to do. One: confirm that he was the man that I was looking for. I pulled off the sack, and he blinked. His washed-out blue eyes looked up at me with a mix of fear and confusion. No recognition was there, but once again my stomach lurched. It was him. The second thing was to kill him.
“Who are you?” he asked, the fear in his eyes consuming him. I swallowed it up into the black hollow that was carved inside me. I loved it when they showed me fear. It fed the darkness within me. It allowed me to remember why I was doing this. Now he knew how the people he had tormented felt.
“Who are you?” I repeated back. Now he looked at my companions.
“Albert, what is this?” He spoke to the man who had brought me here.
“Father just answer his questions, then you can leave.” Albert looked away, guilt in his eyes. He knew the priest, maybe even liked him.
“What do you want?” Father Declan asked, his words angry now.
“When I was a little boy, my father asked me that exact same question. I told him I wanted the world, and do you know what he said to me?” I kneeled down, coming eye level with the priest. “If I want the world, all I have to do is reach out…and take it.” I smiled at the memory, which empowered me even as a boy. I knew anything was possible. I knew no matter how they tried to break me, I would break them back.

Shawn Gale

Shawn and I met through social media. Through this interview I discovered he studied in my home state – yeah Wisconsin!

Author Bio:

Shawn Douglas Gale is a Canadian screenwriter, an academic, and a critically-acclaimed author.

Gale graduated from Fraser Valley Writers’ School with a Master’s diploma. He then graduated from Humber College’s prestigious School for Writers, where he was awarded a Letter of Distinction. He completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Creative Writing at Bircham International University. He was a student at University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Creative Writing department from 2014 to 2017, where he earned two certificates in screenwriting. He has completed various other courses and programs in areas such as trauma, psychology, criminology, and vocational training.

Gale’s many stories and articles have been publshed in anthologies and periodicals in the U.S. and Canada. He is the author of the acclaimed, award-nominated story collection The Stories That Make Us. He is also the author of World of Dawn: Arise and World of Dawn: Reveal, books one and two of his critically-acclaimed fantasy series for all ages. Books three and four will be published in 2019 and 2020, respectively.

Gale is a member of Burnaby Writers Society and The Writers’ Union of Canada.

Tell us about yourself?

I was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and grew up on military bases in eastern and western Canada. Throughout my late teens and early twenties, I worked as a carpenter’s apprentice and later carpenter. I built custom timber frame homes in Ontario’s Muskoka lakes, on southern Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands.

I’ve been an avid reader since I could read and played Dungeons & Dragons seriously in my teens. Some of my favorite movies are Braveheart, Apocalypse Now, Guardians of the Galaxy, and both the Hunger Games and The Lord of the Rings series. I have an eclectic taste in music. In particular, classical music, foreign folk music, and 90’s dance and hip-hop gets my motor revving. Although I don’t write poetry, I read, recite, and memorize it daily. My favorite poems are by Leonard Cohen and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. I also really like Anne Sexton’s “The Starry Night” and Marianne Williamson’s “Shine.”

When did you know you wanted to be an author?

In late 2009, at the age of thirty, I had a life changing experience. It was during this time that I committed to becoming an author. I’ve never strayed.

What genres do you like to read? And are these the genres you like to write?

I read pretty much every genre, except for romance (nothing against it), though I do lean toward sci-fi, fantasy, and literary fiction. More often than not, I have three books on the go: fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. For non-fiction, I usually read history, philosophy, and self-improvement. I’m reading Brene Brown’s Daring Greatly right now for a university course. When it comes to poetry, I read everything and anything. Lately, I’ve been memorizing “The Builder” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

Writing is an adventure, and I enjoy challenging myself. If I take on a project, I’ll lean into it with everything I got. I’ve written sci-fi, fantasy, memoir, essay, screenplay, and literary short and long fiction. After I finish my acclaimed World of Dawn, WOD, sci-fi fantasy series, I’ll be working full time on a novel loosely titled Into the Caliphate, which I’m doing research for as we speak. It’s literary fiction in the vein of Cormac McCarthy’s style. It’s about a young man who heads to ISIS’s Caliphate at the height of its power to rescue his younger sister, who’d travelled there to become an ISIS bride. Keep your eyes open for it. I promise it’ll be a doozy.

Is your book for adults, young adults, or children?

My WOD series is for ages twelve and up. I’ve heard glowing feedback from teens to adults. There are themes, subject matters, and characters that I believe will resonate with everyone. With that said, I do suggest parents read up on World of Dawn via reviews, excerpts, etc. before buying books for their children.

What is your current release project?

Currently, I’m preparing to launch World of Dawn: The Great Reach, which is book three of my series. At the same time, I’m seeking financing to produce book one’s feature film and promoting the series in its entirety.

Tell us about your key characters?

The main characters are a band of troubled youth from Earth. On their journey to find a way home, they meet a host of other characters. Some join their adventure for a time, while others pop in and out throughout the four books. As I noted earlier, there’s literally someone for everyone in WOD.

The core characters are the young cowboy Tanner Kurtz. There’s Colby Watts from the streets of Detroit. The sisters Anna and Tabitha Conroy are from a wealthy San Francisco family. Simon Watts is from a Snohomish Native American reserve in the Pacific Northwest. Glooscap is a legendary brave of the Sawnay people who’ve been on World of Dawn for centuries. Ambrose Bierce is the mentor of the group. He’s based on the real-life American writer who actually disappeared in 1917 while searching for a stargate in Mexico. (Yes, I am serious.) And Dejunga is the fiercest brave of the cannibalistic Wendo tribe, who’s hunting the group for WOD’s super-villain One Who Sees All.

What is the blurb or synopsis of the book?

Here’s the synopsis for the soon-to-be-released book three, World of Dawn: The Great Reach. Book one’s and two’s can be viewed on my website https://www.worldofdawn.com/category/world-of-dawn/.

Finding a way home to Earth has proven elusive for the boys and girls of Halton House. Now, in the Women of the North’s alpine village, they believe they’ve made it. They soon learn, though, it won’t be as easy as they’ve been led to believe. With foes around every corner and One Who Sees All’s bounty hunters on the stalk, the group’s mettle is put to the ultimate test. And when a people need help, they’re faced with yet another dilemma. One that may kill them. The time is nearly at hand. A convergence of unimaginable forces are about to collide. And the truth of World of Dawn will soon be revealed. Continue the adventure in the third installment of World of Dawn. A coming-of-age story in which a journey to find a way home becomes a quest to save a world.

Do you have a favorite scene?

This is a tough question to answer, because there are a plethora of excellent scenes. That said, I’m gonna say the final scene of each four books. All four books end with a scene in Dejunga’s point-of- view. There ends up being much more to him than initially meets the eye. That’s all I’ll say. Read the books if you want to know more. And trust me, you want to know more.

What advice would you give a beginner?

If you want to be an author, write every day. Practice your craft and study the market and literature daily: by yourself, in school or workshops. It takes will, courage, and vision to be a critically and commercially successful author. People dream of writing for a living, yet unfortunately many throw in the towel before publishing. Maybe they can’t handle the rejection. Maybe their friends and family question their sanity. Or maybe they just don’t have what it takes. You need to persevere, be strong and brave, and believe in yourself. And of course, you need to have something important to say.
So what are you waiting for?

Emanuel Andrei Cosutchi

Emanuel Andrei and I met through social media.

Author Bio

Emanuel Andrei Cosutchi lives in the European Union, Romania. He has a regular job working as an IT engineer. He writes books in his spare time. His goal is to become a professional writer. His dream is to see at least one of his books turned into a movie. Emanuel Andrei Cosutchi started writing books since August 2016, because he loves the Science fiction and Fantasy genre.

Emanuel Andrei Cosutchi is a consumer like everybody else, meaning that he has read books, watched movies and played video games. One day, he decided to create his own Sci-Fi universe. Therefore, the Starship “Apple of Discord” project was born. This is a space opera and Emanuel Andrei Cosutchi finished the first three volumes on November 11, 2017. Emanuel Andrei Cosutchi will write more volumes, because this saga isn’t finished yet, and he plans to write other Sci-Fi and Fantasy books too.

Hello and thanks for having me!

To begin, my full name is Emanuel Andrei Cosutchi, friends call me Andrew.  I was born in August ’77, so I chose my nickname ACE977.

I work as IT Engineer. My goal is to become a professional writer. My dream is to have one of my books turned into a movie.

When did you know you wanted to be an author?

Once I was a consumer of books. Also I watched movies and I played video games, but one day I decided to create my own Sci-Fi universe. I started writing in August 2016, having in mind this consumer experience.

What genres do you like to read?  Are these the same genres you write in?

I read mostly science fiction and fantasy books, but I like other genres too, excepting horror.

My favorite Sci-Fi books are:

Roadside picnic by Arkadi & Boris Strugatsky
The Men in the Jungle by Norman Spinrad
Dune by Frank Herbert

My favorite Fantasy books are:

A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin

Is your book for adults, young adults or children?

I don’t depict gore or porn scenes in my book therefore any teenager or adult can read them.

My current W.I.P. is a Sci-Fi novel called The forsaken colony. I also strive to finish the fourth volume of my space opera Starship “Apple of  Discord”.  I finished the first three volumes on November 11, 2017 and I will write more, because this saga is not finished.

Tell us about the key characters

The science fiction novel The forsaken colony is not ready yet, so I prefer to tell you more after I will finish it this autumn. Both the standalone novel The forsaken colony and the space opera Starship “Apple of  Discord”depict alien worlds, advanced technology, alien civilizations and cultures. I present space and ground battles in my action scenes. I populated these books with villains and benevolent characters: aliens, warlords, dictators, traders, scientists, artisans, space pirates, colonists, travellers, soldiers, kings and princesses. I carefully carved out these two distinct Sci-Fi universes and I hope the readers will fall in love with them.

What is your blurb or synopsis of the book?

Here are the hook lines for all my books:

The Restoration – A reptilian species uses the time travel as a weapon to enslave other civilizations. An android is not content about the present and tries to alter the past.

SS Vagabond (not published) – In a distant dystopian future, Captain Edward Turner is struggling to survive, transporting goods and passengers with his freighter, SS Vagabond. Eileen, the second in command and Edward’s lover, urges him to accept a risky yet lucrative mission to Mars. What could go wrong?

CHAPTER 1 –  An unfortunate experiment

2017 A.D.

System Undamaan owned by an alien species,

940 light years away from Earth

Ixtli, one of the two continents of Planet Undamaan

There were only two employees in the hotel’s reception office at that late hour. One was a male and the other a female of the same humanoid alien species. The males of this species had variegated marbled skin with nuances of forest green and big violet eyes, and the females had a sapphire blue color and shiny, topaz-like eyes. They had already worked continuously for fifteen Earth days and were due for a break, but the employees for the next shift could arrive only after the terrible snow storm ceased. When the aliens observed the lift moving to the ground floor, they rushed from their high-tech office. The two aliens approached the precious polished wood front desk that was filled with various objects. All of the aliens who saw them thought that these objects should be in a museum of history for common people. Only a millionaire from Earth could afford such luxuries as these.

A human emerged from the lift carrying a heavy backpack. The man wore an earflap cap and a long, synthetic fur jacket over a plain shirt and jeans. He was sweating profusely, but that was all that he could afford to buy from the colony’s bazaar.  The two alien employees looked at each other and giggled.

“Good evening!” the man said joyfully. “Oh! I almost forgot.”

He mimicked the salute the club’s bartender had given him when he had stopped by there earlier.

“Greetings… Adam!” the alien male read from a discreetly camouflaged display. “How may I help you?”

The tour company the aliens worked for did not allow them to use advanced technology in front of the customers to preserve an authentic experience. Adam approached the front desk, searching for a bell, but found none. He was disappointed, so he asked, “Where is it?”

“What are you looking for, sir?” the alien woman asked Adam.

“You know… That thing that sounds when you hit it.”

“I am sorry,” the confused alien asked, “but I don’t know what you are talking about. Can you give me more details?”

“Never mind.” Adam told her. “It was just a desk bell.”

Do you have a favorite scene?

Books are like children, so you can’t have favorites.

What advice would you give a beginner?

Write, publish, repeat.

Caroline Leavitt

Caroline Leavitt and I met through social media. She has additional writing experience as a screenwriter

About Bio

Caroline Leavitt is the New York Times Bestselling author of Pictures of You, Is This Tomorrow, Cruel Beautiful World and 10 other novels, many of which have been on the Best Books of the Year lists. A writing teacher online at both Stanford and UCLA Writing Program Extension, she also works with private clients. Caroline reviews books for The Boston Globe, the San Francisco Chronicle and People Magazine. Her work has appeared in Real Simple, New York Magazine, Salon, The Manifest-Station, and more. A New York Foundation of the Arts Fellow, she is also a Goldenberg Fiction prize winner and a finalist in the Sundance Screenwriters’ lab.

Tell us about yourself

I am a two times New York Times Bestselling author and I write fiction. I believe in karma so I have made it my goal to help other writers when I can. I also am a screenwriter (I have a screenwriting partner, the excellent novelist Gina Sorell, who wrote Mothers and Other Strangers, and we have a film agent shopping our pilot right now.) I’m addicted to books, and I am also a bonafide movieholic, and can sit through four movies in one day. Happily, too.

When did you know you wanted to be an author?

When I was a lonely little asthmatic girl who couldn’t go out to play. I stayed in the library and read and read, and then began to write. Nothing was more fun or more soothing to me! I knew early on that I was going to be a writer, and my sister and I even wrote “novels” together—long stories with chapters that we created and illustrated.

What genres do you like to read?  Are these the same genres you write in?

I love literary fiction, and yep, that is what I write in. But I also love psychological sci-fi, too!

Is your book for adults, young adults or children?

Adults.

What is your current release or project?
I have a novel called With or Without You that will be published by Algonquin Books in spring 2020. It’s about a fading rocker, his nurse wife who wants to settle down, and what happens when she has a drastic personality change that dramatically impacts her life, his life, and the life of the young doctor treating her.

Tell us about the key characters

Lucy is a young free spirit in the late 1960s who falls for her high school teacher. Her older, more stable sister, Charlotte is the one who feels she must find her baby sister and rescue her.

What is your blurb or synopsis of the book?

Cruel Beautiful World is set at the time when the peace and love of the late 60s morphed into the dangers of the early 70s. It tells the story of a young high school girl who runs away with her teacher to a supposed back-to-the-land paradise, only to find it a nightmare.

Do you have a favorite scene?

Oh, that is like asking me if I have a favorite child! (I do, actually—my one and only child!)

What advice would you give a beginner?

Never ever give up. No matter what anyone says.  No does not mean no for everyone—it just means no for that one particular person.

L N Manning

L N Manning and I met on Facebook through a mutual post. She’s a new author with her two books out.

Author Bio

L N Manning has recently published her second book. Her series is Crescent Edge Pack which in the genre M/M paranormal shifter romance. She turns 40 soon and is celebrating by having a party with 40+ authors in her author group on the June 22 & 23. All are welcome to join her – see the link below.

Tell us about yourself.

Hi, my name is L. N. Manning. I was born and raised in Texas. I am a 39-year-old, disabled, proud momma to two annoying yet adorable fur-babies. A very proud Diet-Coke-aholic! I love to cook, I am a meat and potatoes kind of girl, but I can’t bake worth a damn.

When did you know you wanted to be an author?

I never wanted to be an author, never thought that I would be able to. But an author friend of mind and I were talking and she ended up encouraging me to write. It took a bit, but I decided to give it a try.

What genres do you like to read?  Are these the same genres you write in?

I have a thing for the paranormal, shifters and vampires. I write M/M paranormal/shifter romance. Yes, the genre I write in is the same. I figure that if I enjoy it and find it interesting, someone else may too.

Is your book for adults, young adults or children?

Definitely 18 and over. There is some extremely steamy scenes in my books!

What is your current release or project?

I just released my second book, Defending Their Bond. It is the second book in my Crescent Edge Pack series. Although it is a series, each book can stand alone.

Tell us about the key characters.

The main characters in Defending Their Bond are Bulldog and Edward. Bulldog is a bear shifter with a secret. He is very gruff in his attitude and speech, if you can get him to say more than five words at a time. Edward on the other hand is a bit snarky but fiercely loyal to his friends and pack.

What is your blurb or synopsis of the book?

On the run for most of his life, Thomas “Bulldog” Baird is used to being alone. He never cared what people thought of him, never had a reason to. After helping his friend, Jonathan, settle some old scores with his birth pack, Bulldog finds the one thing he never thought he’d have: a mate. A mate he’s not sure he wants to claim because of his own haunted past.

Edward Rawlings has survived hell, living under a cruel and vicious Alpha who almost decimated his birth pack. When the pack was finally freed from tyranny, Edward thought his fight for life would be over. He was dead wrong.

Can the two find the happiness and love they deserve while they risk their lives defending their bond, or will Bulldog’s past claim them both?

The growls and teeth snapping followed Bulldog all the way outside as he closed Jonathan’s front door behind him. When he was alone on the front porch, Bulldog took a deep breath before he moved to the porch swing and sat down, still in shock over Ethan’s reaction to him. He had known he had some explaining to do but Ethan trying to kill him was a shock.

Leaning his head back and closing his eyes, Bulldog listened to the growls and snarls coming from Ethan inside the house. He hoped that he would get a chance to explain everything to his mate. He never thought that he would find his mate, let alone be the cause of the level of pain Jonathan said he was going through. Just thinking of that made his heart crack a little.

The sound of running feet and more voices reached his ears. Great, the whole pack is gathering. Bulldog thought to himself set the swing in motion.

Bulldog had explained everything to Jonathan about his past that could be a potential danger to his pack when they were talking at his home earlier. He knew he would have to tell Edward everything too, and he was okay with that. Bulldog would rather his mate make an informed decision then just jump into a dangerous mating situation. He knew that if they did mate, then the pack would have to be told somethings but hopefully not everything.

It looked like he was going to have to tell everyone because, from what he was hearing, he didn’t think they would let him near his mate alone.

Bulldog sighed as he lifted his head only to bring it forward and put his face in his hands. He had never been comfortable with people. Since the moment over two hundred years ago when his guild had killed his mother, Bulldog had shut down his emotions and anything that involved him being social. Everything had been easier that way, but now, now he was willing to take a chance. He wanted to see if his mate would forgive him and have a second chance at life. A real life.

The problem was that he had to get back through that door first, before his mate died from the curse of course. With the way Ethan had reacted to him, and knowing that there were four other new pack members that had come from Jonathan and Ethan’s birth pack inside, Bulldog knew that wouldn’t be an easy task.

As he set the swing in motion again the front door opened and Jonathan stepped out. He made his way over to the porch railing and sat down on it. “Bulldog, he is dying.” Jonathan said quietly in a sad voice.

Do you have a favorite scene?

Not a favorite scene, but a scene does stick out in my mind. When I wrote this scene I have no idea where it came from. In my first book there is a character named Ethan, he started out as a shy innocent person but slowly grew into a devoted and somewhat fearless Alpha Mate. In the beginning of this book, Bulldog rejects Edward as his mate, to “protect” him. But finally decides to claim Edward. When he goes to the house that Edward is at, Ethan attacks him, defending his best friend. Before I released the book I let a couple people read it first, and they were calling me and messaging me about how much they loved that scene. I love it too. To see a character come full circle.

What advice would you give a beginner?

I was lucky enough to find an author that helped me through the publishing process. She held my hand and walked me through it. Without her, I don’t know if I would have been able to publish my first book without her. My advice is to talk to established authors that don’t mind answering questions to help you with the process. That will be your best asset.
