This guy is a genius. The effort and heart he has obviously put into his work, the characters and this world is mind-blowing.” – Jennifer, UK
“The pacing of this book was perfect! As I said, it’s only a short story, and sometimes it’s difficult to get the pacing right in short stories, however Mr. Buckley gets the pacing spot on! I found myself wanting to know more before I had even finished the chapter I was on!” – Heather, AU

“I would have thought it well worth reading just for the finale.” – Shadowlantern, USA
“I was able to connect with the characters so well, Jaime’s writings have a way to bring out emotions ( good and bad) that make you feel that you know and care for the people yourreading about in the book.” – Jeremiah, USA

Author Bio
Welcome inside the mind of Robin Michele Carrol, a writer who currently resides in Englewood, Colorado. Robin began writing short stories at the age of nine, but her artistic journey didn’t truly begin until eleven. That’s when she created her own soap opera in junior high and became known as the little girl with the big imagination. Her formation of The Search for Love made her popular amongst her peers as the pages of Robin’s drama circulated throughout the halls of the middle school she attended. Eventually, the teachers learned about the content, and Robin was called to the principal’s office with her mother. She was told the subject matter was too mature, and she was no longer allowed to share it with her classmates. However, the school didn’t want to squelch her talent, so they placed her in an English class with a teacher who helped Robin hone her skills. There, the seeds were planted, and Robin realized she was born to be a storyteller.
Tell us about yourself.
My name is Robin Michele Carroll, and I’m an author and poet who resides in Englewood, Colorado. I have a 19-year-old son and a dog named Zoey. I work as a Real Estate Product Manager in a credit union, but my goal is to someday quit my day job and write full-time. I published my first book, Two Faced, in 2018. It is categorized as mystery and suspense, but it’s also comprised of romance, drama, crime, and a touch of the paranormal. I am currently working on the sequel, Dream Killer, which I hope to have completed by the end of 2019 and published by spring 2020.
When did you know you wanted to be an author?
I began writing in journals when I was nine, but my artistic journey didn’t truly begin until the age of eleven. I had two defining moments that year. The first was when my English teacher gave the class an assignment to either write about a person we admired or to make up our own story. I wanted to write about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., but ten other kids did too, so I decided to go the creative route. I went home that day and started writing whatever sprang to mind. That brainstorm session produced my first short story called A Family Tragedy. After I handed it in, my teacher asked me to return to her class later in the day. When I arrived, I saw my paper on her desk with red ink marks across the entire front of it. I immediately thought that she hated it, but luckily, I was wrong. She expressed how talented I was and informed me that I got an A. She asked if I was interested in having the story entered in a contest for middle school students across the state of Pennsylvania, and when I said yes, she instructed me to make a few corrections. I did, and a few weeks later, it was announced on the school’s intercom that I won. That was an exciting day that will forever be etched in my memory.
The second defining moment happened in study hall several months later. I had completed all of my schoolwork, and I was bored. There was still 30 minutes left in class so I decided to create my own soap opera. My formation of “The Search for Love” made me popular amongst my peers as the pages of my drama circulated throughout the halls of the middle school I attended. I became known as the little girl with the big imagination. Eventually, the teachers learned about the content, and I was called to the principal’s office with my mother. She was told that the subject matter was too mature, and that I was no longer allowed to share it with my classmates. However, the school didn’t want to squelch my talent, so they placed me in an English class with a teacher who helped me to hone my skills. There, the seeds were planted, and I realized that I was born to be a storyteller.
Despite the reprimand I received for adult subject matter, I continued to write the soap opera. The demand was high, and my friends were a lot sneakier when it came to hiding it from the teachers. For almost three years, those characters were a huge part of me, until I chose to retire the show my final year of junior high. By the time I got to high school, I had matured, and I needed my writing to reflect that growth. I wanted to create stories that were more than just drama, romance, and infidelity. That’s when I decided to focus on suspense as my primary genre.
What genres do you like to read? Are these the same genres you write in?
I read and write mystery, suspense, and romance. However, I want to delve into the horror genre. I love Stephen King, and would like to walk in his footsteps one day. As much as my friends dislike horror, they tell me all the time that I would great at it. They often remind me of how I always told the best campfire ghost stories. The other counselors used to get angry with me because their campers were always too afraid to go to sleep, and when they did, they wanted the lights on in their cabins. That was years ago, but it still puts a smile on my face that I was able to create stories, without rehearsal or forethought, that scared people.
My goal is to complete the sequel to my current book, Two Faced, and then work on my first horror book. I don’t know all the details yet, but I do have the concept in my head. It involves clowns and dolls – think Chucky meets Pennywise from IT.
Is your book for adults, young adults or children?
My book, Two Faced, is for adults, but young adults might enjoy it also.
What is your current release or project?
My current release is the suspense/thriller Two Faced. I’m writing the sequel now, Dream Killer, which should be completed by the end of this year.
Tell us about the key characters
Missy Melendez has psychic abilities. When she closes her eyes, she is plagued by the spirit of a malevolent killer. Her clairvoyance, a gift passed down from her gypsy grandmother, coerces her into a realm of death and suffering that she can’t elude, particularly after her husband, Robert, is executed. His homicide, along with his mistress, compels Missy to acknowledge her own immortality. She knows that she’s the next victim, but she can’t exorcise the killer from her mind – at least not yet. Missy needs to stay connected to him in order to exonerate herself. She’s seen his horrendous deeds in her visions, but will that be enough to convince the arresting officer, Detective Danielle “Dani” Cole, that she’s innocent.
When they meet, Missy recognizes Dani as the nameless, faceless person who’s haunted her dreams for years. Like Missy, Dani is a broken woman who craves the gift of redemption. Insubordination covers her hands in blood, and she battles every day to assuage her misplaced guilt. Dani is determined to do whatever it takes to rebuild her reputation, and she believes that Missy’s conviction will put her back into the department’s good graces. Missy is aware of Dani’s plan, but that doesn’t prevent her from being inexplicably drawn to the other woman. Dani has the power to destroy Missy, but still, the unthinkable happens. Now, with her abilities crippled, the killer moves closer, and Missy must find a way to save them both.

The air was damp, heavy with humidity. The slight, muggy breeze caused the wind chimes to ring, the sound melodic in the still of the night. Despite the lateness of the hour, the temperature remained above eighty degrees. Like the man lurking in the shadows, summer had come with a vengeance.
Unaware of the violence that skulked in its perfect little community, the wealthy Connecticut neighborhood slept. Not a single light shone in the cul-de-sac of high-priced homes. The only illumination was the glow of streetlamps.
The dark figure climbed the stairs of the house on the end. His watchful actions were those of a man whose sole purpose was to remain unrecognized. Dressed in black, he knew he appeared more phantom than man—a ghost in the darkness.
He squatted to retrieve the house key from its hiding place under the stone planter box. The flowers flourished with vibrant, sweet-smelling blossoms, but in time winter would return, and the foliage would die, the stems and leaves curling and brown from the cold. Their time would come, like all living things, including the two unsuspecting targets inside. He smiled beneath the mask as he thought about the job ahead of him. Nothing and no one lived forever.
He slipped the key into the lock and eased the door open. Once inside, he paused for a few minutes to assimilate to his surroundings. From the living room to his right came the steady ticking of an antique clock on the mantel. To his left, a refrigerator hummed quietly in the kitchen. He couldn’t discern any other sounds or movements, just stillness. Satisfied that everything was clear, he advanced up the stairs to the bedrooms.
The thick snore of a sleeping man echoed in the hallway. The intruder retrieved the weapon from its snug resting place—the waistband of his jeans—and followed the sound. The pistol, a .22-caliber semiautomatic, was lightweight and effective at close range. He’d purchased the gun from a drug dealer in Philadelphia, and once the job was complete, he planned to dump it in the nearest river.
He entered the bedroom and observed the couple who lay side by side—his latest victim and, next to him, his beautiful wife. The bed was rumpled, the sheets and blankets twisted around their hips and legs, half-covering them. In the sliver of moonlight that fell across the mattress, the woman’s pale skin stood out, smooth and creamy.
He crossed to where she slept and pressed the barrel of the gun above the woman’s breasts, right over her heart. He squeezed the trigger and smiled as the woman’s eyes popped open. Her body convulsed at the bullet’s impact. She gasped for air, the gurgling sound wet as fluid and oxygen met.
The man beside her opened his eyes and scrambled into a sitting position. Making small, squeaky sounds of terror, he inched backward until his spine pressed flat against the bed’s headboard. His chest heaved as he looked frantically back and forth from the man dressed in black to his twitching, bloody companion.
“Hello, Robert.” The predator circled the bed until he came face-to-face with his prey. “Someone has paid me a lot of money to rid the earth of you and your wife.”
Robert moved his mouth, but no words escaped. He appeared to be a breath away from dissolving into complete, incoherent hysteria. He whimpered and wiped the errant tears that ran down his cheeks.
The killer whacked him across the face with the butt of his gun. “Pull yourself together and quit acting like a little bitch.”
Robert inhaled deeply to control his emotions and relieve the searing pain in his head. “You … you have the wrong person,” he stammered.
“No. Unfortunately for you, I don’t.”
“You’re making a huge mistake. I’m not …” He hesitated. “You don’t understand.”
“On the contrary, I understand it all, Robert. You should have just given him the files and photos from the list. Now I’ve been sent to retrieve them from you.”
Robert shook his head. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“If you don’t want to die, like your wife, then you’ll tell me where they are.”
“I don’t have any files, and she’s not my wife,” Robert uttered.
“Who’s not your wife?” he asked. For the first time, the killer examined the woman’s features and realized that he’d made a mistake. He leaned toward Robert and pressed the barrel of his gun to the underside of the man’s chin. “Where is she?” he hissed menacingly.
“I don’t know. She disappeared without telling me. Maybe she left so fast because she has whatever you’re looking for.”
“You think I’m naive enough to believe that you trust your wife with your prized possession?” With his free hand, he grabbed a handful of Robert’s hair and jerked him around to face his lifeless companion.
Robert watched the ever-growing pool of blood creep across the white satin coverlet toward him.
“I’m losing my patience, Robert. Now stop with the diversion tactics and tell me where Missy and the files are.”
“She must have gone to see her friend Kayla in Miami, but I don’t know her last name, so I don’t think you’ll find her.”
“Finding people is what I do,” he stated smugly. He squeezed the trigger. Brains and blood sprayed across the white headboard and onto the rose-patterned wallpaper.
He stared at the colorful mess, and like an artist with a freshly painted canvas, he beamed in appreciation of his creation. As he basked in the pungent smell of death, his excitement turned to desire. He unzipped his jeans and satisfied himself, leaving evidence of his arousal on the female corpse. Before he left the room, he placed the mistress’s earrings and Robert’s watch in his pocket as mementos.
After checking the rest of the house for the files and any information that would lead to Missy’s whereabouts, the killer returned to Robert’s room. He kneeled in front of the bed occupied by his victims and bowed his head. With eyes that glistened with tears, he prayed for absolution.
Do you have a favorite scene?
The development of my characters is extremely important to me. I want the reader to love them, hate them, and even wish for certain ones to die in an excruciating manner. If they feel the way I want them to about the events and people in the book then I’ve fulfilled my responsibility as a writer. I’ve had several people tell me, after reading Two Faced, how much they disliked Dani. They were surprised that I would make her so unlikable since she’s a main character. But what they came to realize is that Dani is complicated. She’s stern, uncompromising, and seemingly heartless, which is similar to many women who are in male-dominated job fields. Any sign of emotion, and they’re labeled as being too sensitive to effectively perform their duties. As the only female detective on the team, Dani has to deal with sexism and misogyny on a regular basis, which forces her to develop impenetrable armor. However, throughout the book, there’s the realization that her shield is not so powerful. In a scene towards the end of the book, Dani opens her heart and lets the reader experience her deepest, darkest secrets. She shares her childhood scars, and it’s heartbreaking. But it also allows the audience to empathize with her as they start to fully understand what shaped her into the person she’d become. Her vulnerability is raw and real because it’s based on first-hand knowledge, and I think that pain resonates with many women. Either because they’ve had similar incidences in their own lives or knows someone that has survived the same trauma. I believe the scene can help the wounded overcome their own tragedy, and if that’s true, then that makes Two Faced even more gratifying for me.
What advice would you give a beginner?
My advice for a beginner is to always believe in yourself, and no matter what happens…keep writing. When you feel like everything you create is not good enough…keep writing. When someone tells you that you can never make a living as an author…keep writing. If all you have is an idea…keep writing. If you feel like you’re too old to follow your dream…keep writing. If someone reads your work and hates it…keep writing. When someone says that you must write the way everyone else does to be successful, just stay your course and…keep writing. Work that 9 to 5 to support your family but…keep writing. And most importantly, when fear and doubt darken your doorstep…keep writing.
In the movie Sister Act 2, Whoopi Goldberg shares a quote with Lauryn Hill’s character, Rita, from the book Letters to A Young Poet, which says, “Don’t ask me about being a writer. If when you wake up in the morning and you can think of nothing but writing, then you’re a writer.” That was true for me, and if that’s true for any future writers out there, then my advice is to simply keep writing.

Author Bio
I gave up a rewarding career as a senior book buyer to become a stay-at-home Mom. I had come home from work one day, and I found that the caregiver taking care of our children had slapped my oldest child age four at the time on the side of her head. The next day I went into work and gave my two-weeks notice.
I have always been an avid reader. As my children became young adults, I found I needed more in my personal life than being the volunteer Mom at the local schools. I sat down at the computer one day and book one Patrick, of the Risking Love series, was born.
I am lucky that I found my soul mate and married him. Like my characters, I am a firm believer in true love.
Tell us about yourself
I
grew up in a small New England farm town. I spent a great deal of time in the
summer months on a lake in a boat reading while waves gently rocked me. In the
spring and fall, it was back to the farm town where I’d take long walks in the
woods, find the perfect spot, and sit and read or draw the things I was
surrounded by. Trees, birds, rabbits, flowers and rolling hills.
I moved to the Midwest for my job, as a senior book buyer, and found myself in
a foreign way of communicating. On the east coast, you learn at an early age to
get right to the point. State the facts, possible solutions, make a decision,
and then you went and got done what needed to be done as quickly as possible.
Here in the Midwest, I was a fish out of water. Not because of the town we live
in. That is lovely a small farm town similar to the one I grew up around. But I
found that they like to talk around the actual problem at hand and have
meetings to discuss the last meeting. Only to one day finally, get to why you
were really there to solve that one issue.
That was so hard for my husband to deal with in the auto industry. He took to saying, “You’ll have to excuse me. I’m from New York, and there we get right to the point. So please don’t think me rude; it’s just the only way I know how to be.”
I found that funny because of course he could have changed and done things the way they do here in the Midwest. He just chose not to. I’m sure they were shocked by this at first, but they’ve gotten used to him over the years.
When did you know you wanted to be an author?
This may sound strange to so many authors out there who knew at an early age that they wanted to be writers, but for me, it wasn’t until my youngest child was in his last year of high school. All of the volunteer work I’d been doing around our schools here was coming to an end as most of it revolved around the book fairs, band, and the sports my children had been involved with.
So one day I sat down in front of my computer and wrote a love story that was near and dear to my heart. Much of it was fiction, but there was a good deal of my love story with my husband and myself. So the words just flowed out onto the pages. I remembered one of my English professors in college saying write what you know, so I did. I enjoyed it so much that I just kept on going until I got four and a half novels completed. Then asked myself now what do I do with them. I submitted Patrick, book one to four publishers and was lucky to have Black Velvet Seductions pick it up as well as the rest of the series.
What genres do you like to read? Are these the same genres you write in?
I used to read pretty much any novel that had something to do with the law. For example: John Grisham novels, but a few years back I started reading romance novels. I’ve been hooked ever since. All of my books are romance novels.
Is your book for adults, young adults or children?
For adults. All of my books are love stories with a happy ending. The lovemaking scenes are hot and spicy.
What is your current release or project?
NICOLAS Book Two in the Risking Love Series it is on pre-order for only 99 cents until the publication day of 3/14/19
Tell us about the key characters
Carlie comes from a life of poverty. She works hard in college and at her job to get away from that depressing life. She has no time to start a relationship, so when Dr. Nicolas Antonis shows interest in her, she turns him away.
Nicolas comes from a successful, outgoing Greek family. He has three hot and sexy brothers. My Beta Readers have already told me that I have to do another series that revolves around the Antonis brothers especially the brooding brother Damon. Nicolas has no intention of following the two-year plan that Carlie is so bent on pursuing. His plan includes her becoming his.
What is your blurb or synopsis of the book?
Carlie planned to finish at the top of her class, get a corporate job, and work her way up the ladder. She refused to risk having a life of poverty ever again. Within her plans, there was no room for a relationship. So she had sworn off men; especially the good Dr. Nicolas Antonis.
Nicolas had other plans. They included her becoming his.
As if Nicolas wasn’t a big enough distraction; Carlie had to worry about her roommate’s, abusive ex-boyfriend, coming for her too.

Carlie
I turned back to the dance floor, and to the man I’d been
watching. He moved a beautiful woman around like they had been dancing together
for years. I hoped that wasn’t the case. Anyone who could move their hips the
way he did, and glide a woman around with the ease he did, had to be an amazing
lover. I imagined what it would be like to have sex with him and not have to
fake an orgasm. My body heated.
Faking it had been required most of the time
with my ex. But this man might be worth a bit of my study time. I fanned myself
just as he made eye contact with me. I felt a shiver up my spine.
Of course, I shouldn’t have been having such
thoughts. Being out with my friends for a bit of fun before diving back into my
studies should have been all that concerned me. I’d learned my lesson in junior
college that having a boyfriend interfered with my studies. Now, I had straight
A’s with just two semesters to go. Thank goodness the transfer credits didn’t
affect my GPA. My plan to graduate at the top of the class was definitely in
reach. Any distraction could jeopardize that goal.
Yet, as he left the dance floor alone, I
couldn’t help but wonder who he’d dance with next.
Nicolas
I’d gone to the club just to blow off some steam
after another long medical residency shift at the local hospital. Besides long
distance running, dancing was my favorite way to leave work behind. As I spun
the woman in my arms around the dance floor, a gorgeous woman with sandy blond
hair, dressed in a conservative pencil skirt and white blouse, caught my eye.
She watched my every move. The more she watched, the more I wanted it to be her
in my arms. When our eyes met, it felt like I’d been punched in the gut.
I wasn’t at the club to meet anyone. I was far
too busy trying to impress the powers that be at the hospital. There was only
one surgical position available—and I wanted it. It was down to one other
resident and me, and I’d already decided I’d do whatever I needed to do to make
sure the position was mine. Being a surgeon—saving lives—had been all I’d ever
wanted. If I got to do it right here in my hometown, near my close-knit family,
all the better.
As the song ended, I thanked the young lady for
the dance and then went in search of the woman I’d been drawn to. She was too
neat and tidy, with perfect hair, perfect makeup, and a professional outfit. It
was almost business attire, except for the killer black stilettos and the extra
unbuttoned button showing the start of her cleavage. I headed down the crowded
aisle toward where I had last seen her. As I searched, I reminded myself that I
was not in the market for a relationship.
Then I spotted her and observed those wary,
beautiful blue eyes—and knew I was lost. I made my way through the sea of
Friday night partiers. The closer I got to her, the faster my heart raced.
I had dressed in a dark navy suit, and I could
see her taking in every inch of my attire. Hopefully, the spark that flashed in
her eyes as she looked into mine meant that she liked what she saw and felt the
intense attraction between us. I straightened my tie and gave her a slow, sexy
smile.
Her eyes darkened.
When we were just inches apart, I took her hand,
and spun her around. “My name is Nicolas Antonis. What’s yours?”
She cleared her throat. “If you must know, it’s
Carlie Keith.”
Her sharp tone may have turned another man off,
but not me. I wanted her.
“Carlie, this next song is ours.”
I tugged her toward me and started for the dance
floor. The closer we got, the more she seemed to hesitate. I stopped abruptly and
turned to see why she was straining to get away. But then she must have changed
her mind, because instead of wrenching away she moved forward and fell into my
arms.
Her eyes squeezed closed, and her arms wrapped
around me. I told myself that I kept her tight against my body to keep her from
falling. What I was actually doing was seeing if my touch could melt a bit of
her coolness.
Her eyes fluttered open, and the heat coming
from them nearly burned me. I was sure what they were saying was, ‘My name is Carlie
Keith. Please take me.’ The fire building between us was melting her frost.
I leaned in and whispered against her ear,
“What’s wrong? Don’t you like dancing?”
Her eyes drooped closed, and she gasped as a
strand of hair on her neck stirred in the slight breeze created by my breath.
Her reaction caused my dick to get semi-hard, and I still hadn’t moved away.
She exhaled and bobbed her head. “Yes, I do, but
I’m afraid of looking foolish; I can’t do what you were doing.”
“So you were watching me?”
Do you have a favorite scene?
When Carlie meets Nicolas’s family for the first time. It is at their Greek Restaurant. The entire Antonis family is there to meet her. Carlie is overwhelmed by this, but thanks to plenty of ouzo and Nicolas’s hot brothers she ends up having a good time.
What advice would you give a beginner?
This might not be advice that newer writers want to hear, but it is essential for you to be as successful as possible. Set up your social media sites right away that means before you even finish your first book. That is not to say that it is ever too late to do this just that it has to be done. If you don’t advertise to let people know about your book how will they know that it exists? Once they are set up advertise your books regularly. Set up social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Tumblr, Instagram, MeWe, Website, and Goodreads to name a few. Pick three to start and master those before moving on to others, or you will be too overwhelmed.
Read the genre you want to write in. This is important so you can understand what works and doesn’t work in that genre. Of course, keep reading other types that you enjoy too.
Write about things you know, you like, and the words will come to you more easily. If you write about something that you are not familiar with be sure to do plenty of research, so your story is believable.
Do yourself a favor don’t have several named characters in your book because as soon as the editor gets their hands on it, you will be editing a lot of them back out again.

Hywela Lynn
I’ve had a couple of lovely email exchanges with Hywela. It was wonderful to connect with her and learn more about her.
Author Bio:
Originally from rural Wales, Hywela Lyn moved to England when she married. Her first novel, a Science Fiction romantic adventure, ‘Starquest’ published by ‘The Wild Rose Press’, was followed by two more novels ‘Children of the Mist and ‘Beloved Enemy’ to complete what has now become the Destiny Trilogy, each book being complete in itself. In 2017 Beloved Enemy won the Mid-Michigan Romance Writers of America ‘Best Banter’ Contest in the SF/Fantasy category, was nominated for the Romantic Novelists Association Awards (RoNA) in the Paranormal category, and was also Runner Up in the RONE Awards.
Her fantasy novella, incorporating Greek Myths and Welsh and Arthurian legends, entitled ‘Dancing With Fate’ was originally published by TWRP as part of a commissioned anthology but is now available as a ‘stand-alone’ novella. The first two books in the Destiny Trilogy are available in audio format and Beloved Enemy will be available in audio soon.
When not writing or reading and eating chocolate, she enjoys spending time outdoors with her horse and dog.
Tell us about yourself
I’ve always been a hopeless romantic and made up love stories in my head from an early age. I became enthralled by TV westerns and wrote several short stories about the Old West, before realizing there was no market for them in the UK. Then I discovered Science Fiction and decided there was a great similarity between science fiction and Westerns – a hero and heroine fighting the odds in a hostile environment and facing unknown dangers – but with starships instead of horses. I never thought of myself as a romance writer, until I realized that everything I wrote turned into a love story, and the penny dropped! I love action and adventure, and do tend to put my characters through the mill until the end, but my intention is always for them to end up in each other’s arms and get their ‘happy ever after.’
I’m also an ardent animal lover and usually manage to work an animal of some kind into every story I write. I have a much loved rescued terrier and Quarterhorse x Welsh mare. I’m also interested in wildlife and the environment.
My pen-name is composed of my first two Christian names, which are Welsh. I’ve always been known by my second name, Lyn, so when I started writing I thought it would be a nice idea to use my first name combined with my second one, as it seemed a shame that Hywela was never used.
I’m a member of the Romantic Novelists Association, and our local writers group ‘Chiltern Writers’.
When did you know you wanted to be an author?
I think I knew I wanted to write from the time I realized what a joy reading was. I used to write short stories when we were set writing assignments in school. I won a couple of newspaper short stories and wrote a pretty bad Western historical romance, but although I had short stories published over the years I didn’t try seriously to have a novel published, until I wrote Starquest.
What genres do you like to read? Are these the same genres you write in?
Although my favourite genre is the one I write – Fantasy and Science Fiction romance, I have a fairly broad taste in books, and enjoy anything that is well written and exciting, from historical westerns to romantic suspense.
Is your book for adults, young adults or children?
I think they’re suitable for both young adults and adults of all ages, actually.
What is your current release or project?
I’m currently working on a romantic ghost story set on a pony stud in Wales, but it’s still fairly rough, so if I may I’d like to tell you a bit more about the characters in my latest release, Beloved Enemy.
Although this is the third story in the Destiny Trilogy, Beloved Enemy can be read as a ‘stand alone’, although hopefully it will answer some questions readers may have after reading Starquest. The main male character is Kerry Marchant, who played an important part in the first book, and some of the supporting characters are the crew of the Destiny who also featured in that book. The female lead is Cat Kincaid, a woman with a mission – to kill him. The main theme of the story is that wounded souls have a way of finding each other, and when forced to work together toward a common goal there may be more at stake than just their survival.
Tell us about the key characters
KERRY MARCHANT
Dark haired, blue eyed and good looking, Kerry Marchant is a man haunted by his past. Taciturn and quiet, he is quick witted, with a dry sense of humour that can sometimes be misinterpreted as sarcasm. Raised as an orphan by a cruel and overbearing aunt, he was later sent away to be educated at a Government learning centre where he met and formed a lasting friendship with Jon Quinlan. Possessed of a brilliant mind, he soon displayed an aptitude for computer programming and AI. In his mid-twenties, he designed the Destiny, the beautiful and powerful exploratory starship which he part owns with Jon, who financed the construction of the ship and who is also her commander.
Something of a loner, Kerry’s only really close friend is Jon, although he has respect and a certain amount of affection for the rest of the crew. He is single-minded in his determination to ensure the Destiny’s safety after foiling a plot to hijack her by an alien race, the Graaks. He has an inherent mistrust of women, while mourning the loss of the only woman he ever allowed himself to love. Although he does not show it, his emotions run deep and he cares more for his friends on board the Destiny than he will admit.
CAT KINCAID
Tall, curvaceous and attractive, with auburn hair and grey eyes, Cat is also independent and single minded. She has learnt to trust no one and to rely on her wits to survive. Raised on Earth with her only sister, her comfortable life was turned upside down when her father deserted them. She can handle a starship or a laser-gun and is well able to look after herself whether in hand to hand combat or with a weapon.
After several years in space, she has things in her past, secrets, which it would be dangerous to reveal, and one in particular which she has made a promise to keep safe, and to protect with her life, rather than allow it to fall into the wrong hands.
Past experience has led her to mistrust men and to be determined never to let another one betray her trust. However, there is one man whom she has sworn to track down and confront before killing him – the man she believes to be responsible for her sister’s death. When she finally meets him, however, she is confused by conflicting emotions which have nothing to do with revenge.
What is your blurb or synopsis of the book?
Cat Kincaid is obsessed with killing the man she believes is responsible for the torture and death of her sister, but when she eventually catches up with him, survival becomes a greater priority than revenge.
Kerry Marchant, haunted by memories, regret, and self-blame, shields himself from the pain of the past by committing himself totally to the starship, Destiny, of which he is part owner. However, the beautiful, red-haired woman who reminds him of his lost love, and who he suspects is working for a corrupt regime, represents a possible threat not only to the ship, but to his heart.
Marooned on an inhospitable planet, they need to work together to stay alive, fighting not only unknown assailants, but their growing attraction. But how can they learn to trust each other when he has vowed never to get close to a woman again, and she made a solemn pledge to destroy him?

He made as if to stand, and in an instant, she drew her pistol.
“Like I said before, no sudden moves. Get up—slowly.”
“So you are making me a prisoner?”
“Not exactly, but I’m not stupid enough to take any risks.”
He rose to his feet, his gaze not leaving her gunhand. Several inches taller than her, broad shouldered and slim, he presented a commanding figure. His expression froze as his gaze homed in on the insignia on her breast pocket, his eyes like chips of blue ice.
“You work for the Union.”
“I work for myself.”
“Then why are you wearing the insignia of the Global Union of Earth and Allied Planets?”
“I have a license to requisition any enemy ship trespassing in the sectors of space over which they hold dominion.”
“A licensed pirate in the pay of the Global Union,” Kerry’s eyes showed outright contempt. She almost preferred the icy coolness.
“I prefer to think of myself as a freelancer—doing a service.”
His expression did not change, although he did change tack. “You could have left me to die—or just shot me. Why didn’t you?”
“Call it a personality flaw. I don’t like abandoning someone who’s wounded even to save my own skin. And I don’t kill in cold blood. If I have to shoot someone, I’d rather they were facing me with their eyes open.” Even if I did swear to leave their dead body for the Union to use in their hideous experiments. Keep it casual. Don’t let him guess what’s really in your mind.
To her amazement, he smiled the most devastating smile she’d ever seen, made even more remarkable because he didn’t look as if he did it very often.
“My own philosophy as it happens. It seems almost a pity we are on opposite sides.”
“Opposite sides?”
“I have no love for the Union. That puts us on opposite sides, even if you are just a pirate, doing their dirty work for them.”
She gave him her best withering look. “Fine. And just because I decided to save your hide, don’t get any ideas. We don’t have to like each other.”
Do you have a favorite scene?
Well, apart from the climax, which obviously I can’t reveal *grin* but which I really enjoyed writing, I do rather like the part where Cat has saved him from a monstrous alien river creature, but it wraps a tentacle around her leg and pulls her towards the river. For a moment, she thinks she’s been attacked by a snake – the only thing she’s afraid of. When they final kill the creature, the smouldering attraction they’ve both been trying to ignore, rises to the surface – but will they be able to put aside their mutual suspicion long enough to act on it? Here’s a snippet.
“It seems I was mistaken about the creature being dead.” Kerry prodded the smouldering mass with his boot and looked across over the water. “It is now.” He leaned down and grasped her wrist to haul her to her feet. “Are you hurt?”
“No, I don’t think so.” Her shoulder was sore and probably bruised but she’d live.
She tried to control her shivering. The incident affected her more than she wanted to admit. Kerry’s proximity—naked to the waist, his lithe body shining from the water droplets that still clung to his skin, and his legs swathed in tight black leather—did nothing to help. The last thing she wanted was for him to realize how scared she’d been when she thought a snake attacked her.
“Thanks. That was close. It would have been a bit ironic if I’d been killed by the same creature I saved you from.”
She realized he still grasped her wrist. She tried to move away, but he pulled her back, obliging her to turn to him.
“You’re trembling.”
“I’m fine.”
“No,” he said. “You’re not.” He pulled her closer and his eyes softened, his gaze holding her mesmerized.
She opened her mouth to try to speak, but in the same instant, he put his hand under her chin and his lips closed over hers.
What advice would you give a beginner?
Keep writing! Never give up and write what you enjoy writing about – and find a few beta readers or crit partners whom you can trust to give you an honest opinion of your final draft, after you’ve revised and rewritten it enough to make it the best you can get it. Then be prepared to revise some more – but only if you agree with what they’re telling you – you don’t have to accept everything but often they will spot something you’re too close to yourself, to be able to see.

Moon Affirmations on Amazon!
Last night I had Moon Affirmations go through final approval for Smashwords. This means I’m able to use the same file – with a few adjustments – submit to KDP which is the e-publisher for Amazon.
After an hour or so working on it, I submitted it last night and now it is available on Amazon. I’m very excited about this book. It is completely different from other meditation books because it uses the phase of the moon to focus your energy. This means during a new moon, you would focus on beginnings or starts to the projects, relationships, and so on.
Next step for this meditation book is to get it in print. I’m working on that but discovered all of my images need to be reworked to a higher DPI. I was four steps from being done when I discovered this. This means I have to work on it as I’m able and hopefully will get all the images updated, cleaned up and ready for print this week. However, time is my most limited resource.
In the meanwhile, go check out the meditation book at:
